Snow White: A Graphic Novel | Matt Phelan
77 posts | 84 read | 128 to read
Award-winning graphic novelist Matt Phelan delivers a darkly stylized noir Snow White set against the backdrop of Depression-era Manhattan. The scene: New York City. The dazzling lights cast shadows that grow ever darker as the glitzy prosperity of the Roaring Twenties screeches to a halt. Enter a cast of familiar characters: a young girl, Samantha White, returning after being sent away by her cruel stepmother, the Queen of the Follies, years earlier; her father, the King of Wall Street, who survives the stock market crash only to suffer a strange and sudden death; seven street urchins, brave protectors for a girl as pure as snow; and a mysterious stock ticker that holds the stepmother in its thrall, churning out ticker tape imprinted with the wicked words ""Another . . . More Beautiful . . . KILL."" In a moody, cinematic new telling of a beloved fairy tale, extraordinary graphic novelist Matt Phelan captures the essence of classic film noir on the page and draws a striking distinction between good and evil."

I noticed this graphic novel on goodreads. My library had it on the shelf, so I grabbed it. Set in the 1920‘s, an interesting retelling.

I do not read many graphic novels- but the local librarian recommended this when I asked about Snow White retellings- and I HIGHLY recommend it! I love the art, the story set in 1930‘s NYC- Just so good! #fairytalereading

tokorowilliamwallace What's the year-round challenge there? Just Disney/fairytale retellings? 3y
elkeOriginal I agree the setting and art made this one special and so different! 3y

I love this retelling of Snow White as a graphic novel! Taking place in NYC‘s roaring 20‘s it was fantastic. Most of the illustrations are black and white with the apple in a bright red. The dwarfs are 7 street boys. I think it‘s a bit maturely done for an average upcoming 4th grader so it‘s not going in my book club possibilities but it‘s pretty fantastic!

I love this version of Snow White, set in 1920s Manhattan. The red of the apple stands out so much against the black and white drawings.

A graphic novel, 1920s noir take on Snow White? Yes, please! The graphics here are stunning, with the black/white/gray palette dotted with splashes of red that are used effectively. This one could almost be wordless, as the illustrations are definitely the star, but Snow White works surprisingly well when the dwarves are seven street urchins and the evil stepmother is the fading star of the Ziegfeld Follies.

Charityann I enjoyed this book too! 😊 5y

A very interesting re- telling of Snow White. The illustrations were awesome and I am not much on black and white graphic novels but this was very clever and bits of red were masterfully weaved into the black and white drawings. 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I don‘t read a lot of #graphicnovels but these two have been on my radar lately. The tagged book is a #blameitonlitsy and because the updated story of Snow White in Jazz Age and Depression-era New York City sounds alluring.
Anya‘s Ghost is because Gaiman endorsed it. 😁💜

What an eximious retelling of the classic tale Snow White! Matt Phelan retold this classic creatively, using the pre-Depression era in the 1920s as the background setting for this story. I enjoyed this graphic novel especially the beautiful and powerful illustrations! .

If you like film noir, this adaptation is for you. Most of the art is black & white with intentional splashes of red and a few other colors. Story begins in 1918 moving through the Roaring 20s and Great Depression in the Big Apple of NYC. Phelan cleverly uses this urban setting to tell Snow White's story and explore class relationships. Snow's relationship with the "dwarfs" here is much more meaningful than the Disneyfied version.

Rounding out Author Day at #NWAL, Matt Phelan! Sorry I couldn't get a picture with Matt or of the program, I was out at the Circ desk during the event. But, our kiddos had a BLAST learning about how to write and plan a graphic novel and Matt was absolutely amazing to meet and talk to. I can't wait to see what he does next!! If you haven't already, check out his newest book "Snow White," it's fantastic! #AuthorVisit #GraphicNovel

5⭐️ This is the most beautiful retelling of Snow White I have ever read. This graphic novel story moves Snow and her friends to the Roaring 20s New York. The magic mirror has been replaced by a ticker tape, and the dwarves are more lost boys than short grumpy men. This has to be one of the best retellings of this story ever. The illustrations are amazing. Any would be worthy of hanging on the wall. A must read for anyone who likes graphic novels

This graphic novel retelling of Snow White is amazing. Set in Depression era New York and told with very few words and extremely evocative, atmospheric b/w art, it excellently brings the story to life. The art brilliantly evokes action & danger, and the wordlessness is filled in by historical clues in the era's images and the noir look of it lends emotional depth in a very short space. Excellent quick read for any fan of retellings!

Interesting interpretation of the classic Snow White fairytale. This version is set in the 1920's but still features the same cast of characters, except the 7 dwarves are now seven homeless children & the Evil Queen is a Broadway performer. This graphic novel is mostly illustrations so it could easily be read by younger readers, especially if they enjoy the original story. I always love retellings of classic fairytales, and this didn't disappoint.

This is a graphic novel reimagining of the Snow White story. I absolutely love retellings of stories. The story is set just at the brink of the Depression in NYC which was great. I loved the way the author retold the story while staying really close to the original narrative. The illustrations were beautiful and spare with only a touch of red here and there. The author's take on the dwarves was perfect. Overall an intriguing version.

5⭐️- While I finished this book in 10 minutes, it was well spent. I love finding unique graphic novels that are different than the norm. While the dialogue was very small, the charcoal drawings explained this 1920/ Snow White rebelling superbly. The front describes it as "moody, dramatic feel reminiscent of film noir"; I concur but also it had a very cinematic feel to it- like a drawing board of the film prior to filming. Spectacular??

Gorgeous noir-esque retelling of Snow White set in 1920's New York City (which is a perfect setting for a fairy tale retelling!). The atmosphere is dark with both glamour and grit, but nothing I'd be afraid to hand a kid. There's so much wonderful nuance in these illustrations that I know I'll read this again and again.

This quiet graphic retelling of Snow White that takes place in depression era New York City took me a bit by surprise. For some reason I didn't think I would like it that much. But I loved it.

The expressive art and simplicity were captivating. I loved the seven dwarves reimagined as jaded urchins and sweet Snow with her unending hope.

Two small gripes: 1. The lettering. It was so generic and rigid. 2. I was hoping for a more subversive ending.

loved this graphic novel retelling of Snow White - the black & white illustrations with a touch of color were great, the setting of NYC in the 1920s provided a great backdrop, & the reimagining/updating of all the characters from the wicked stepmother to the seven street urchins make this a great retelling of this classic story 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
