And of course, I perused the book nook and came away with a good haul from there as well. 🤓📚

Decided to listen to this one because I started watching the show a few years ago and never finished it. Thought I would try reading the book before I tried finishing the show. I hardly ever say this ... but the TV show is better than the book. I am curious now as to what other books it was up against for the awards it won.
Novel based in the 1960s where the Allies did not win WWII. The US is split in three; a Japanese west coast, a Nazi Germany east coast and a lawless middle, the Neutral Zone. The story follows a handful of characters all influenced by the I Ching, a fate oracle and a book called The Grasshopper Lies Heavy, which shows another world where the Allies did in fact win WWII. Not crazy about the writing style but a pick nonetheless.
This story occurs in 1962 and depicts the political intrigues between Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany as they rule the partitioned United States.
I love the alternative history concept, it was very interesting. However, I struggled with the writing. I found the style choppy and hard to follow. It also took me a while to work out who was who and who was related to who.
I still found it worth the read though. 3/5☆
This book was a bit weird for me, the writing style not very engaging, and I didn't completely understand all of it. 🤷🏻♀️
⭐⭐⭐☆☆

This was underwhelming. In an alternate history where the bad guys won WWII, we focus on the Japanese controlled west coast of the former USA. There's a strange writing style that seems to be attributed to only some characters' portions of the story & it doesn't lend itself to the American vs Japanese differences. A few of the Americans continually make decisions based on the I Ching which is like a prophesy-telling book. Why? Is it required?⬇️

1. Enjoyed the show and love Philip K Dick, so this was an easy pick.
2. What if the Bronze Age empires didn't suddenly and mysteriously collapse in the 12th century B.C.? What would our modern world look like?
3. Worse is always better! 😄
Speculative fiction set in a 1962 America where WWII ended very differently. This inspired the Amazon Prime series. Some of Philip K Dick's other works inspired Blade Runner, Total Recall and Minority Report. Wow. ⭐⭐⭐
🎧📚 Alternate history! It‘s 1962, 15 years after we lost WWII. Japan rules the west coast, Nazi Germany rules the East. The 2 are divided by a neutral zone called The Rocky Mountain States.
Slaves exist. Super racial profiling.
5 main characters.: Childen, Tagomi, Baynes, Frink & Julianne
1st 1/2 of the book is in the west & 2nd in the neutral zone so the only Nazi info you get is from 2nd hand opinions & info dumps.
⭐️⭐️⭐️2/3 👇🏻
I joined a book club & the first chosen book arrived a day early today. 🤓 I‘ve resisted as I really don‘t have the time to read a book but I‘m going to try it. I can always fall back on the audiobook but I‘d prefer to read & anotate. I take my book clubs seriously 🙄 I have no idea how but I haven‘t seen this tv show or read the book so this should be fun! It‘s only 15 chapters. Sigh. We shall see. I remain hopeful! 😁
Trying to figure out what to read next...
I have been crocheting A LOT. I had a friend ask if I could make a couple of masks for her and her husband. Then it kind of exploded into a bunch of people wanting them. I haven‘t heard anything from unemployment yet. It‘s been over a month now since I filed. Luckily making masks (and so far one pizza blanket) has helped to give me a little bit of extra money for essentials. I signed up for kindle unlimited and canceled audible.
I enjoyed this, but I feel like a reread is in order. In a few months. There‘s a lot to unpack here.
🙌🙌🙌
Finally, another classic I've been meaning to read for so long. To me, this book only unfolded a couple of hours after I've finished it. While reading, I never knew what to think about it. After a bit of research and going over the story in my head it came to me what a great piece of art this is.
Some things just take their time.
And I'm sure to read this one again.
“On some other world, possibly it is different. Better. There are clear good and evil alternatives. Not these obscure admixtures, these blends, with no proper tool by which to untangle the components.”
Someone on Goodreads just 'liked' my non-existent review of this book, which was thoughtful and kind of them. I did save this quote, though, which as ever with PKD seems to presciently sum up the present state of affairs.
Starting this next on #primereads
9-24-19: My 77th finished book of 2019! #themaninthehighcastle #philipkdick 👍🏼📖#️⃣7️⃣7️⃣
Es ist ein ganz gutes und interessantes Buch, hat aber noch Luft nach oben.
“What profit it a man if he gain the whole world but in this enterprise lose his soul?”
I don't really enjoy this book but it is a bit interesting to see a world ruled by the axis. The story was too jumbled up for me.

I have a book on castles somewhere that I can‘t find, as soon as I post this it will no doubt make itself known!!
Been a while since I last spent time with this work.
"We do not have the ideal world, such as we would like, where morality is easy because cognition is easy. Where one can do right with no effort because he can detect the obvious."
It continues to speak sadly, starkly, hopefully, truly...
Another Philip k dick book that i want to dive into ! I love finding retro paperbacks of his works this one is the only one I have found so far from the 70's😎😎😎
#retro
This was weird. Not all of the characters were relevant. Plot was weak. Just a lot of people thinking about nothing? The show seems much more engaging. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ for innovative premise.
Have to read this for my fantasy class! Has anyone else read it? The ending is pretty confusing I think haha :p #fantasy #alternatehistory #bibliophile #philipkdick #bookworm #sciencefiction
For my WW2 peeps out there in Litsy Land...

My tentative TBR for the week, but l‘ll probably start THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY this week and maybe the tagged book. Any favorites I should prioritize?
Forgot to post this during yesterday‘s snow storm. ❄️ Very uncharacteristic of me to venture out in bad weather, but something about the way the snow was falling excited me and I wanted to see how it looked covering the train tracks. Very glad I took a stroll to see it! It was so beautiful and peaceful. ❤️ #LitsyWalkers #audiowalk
#BookNBreakfast! Pre-snowstorm outing for an impromptu breakfast at the local diner. Accompaniment this cold and gray (and now snowy!) morn was: American cheese, ham, spinach, and mushroom omelet with black coffee. MMMmmmm 😋! Happy reads & happy eats!
#BookNDinner! #Vietnamese Edition! Trying a new place tonight. Accompaniment this cold and dark evening: pho tái nam gau—a beef broth soup with 3 meats—beef, flank, and brisket, with basil, bean sprouts, and rice vermicelli. Paired with a Thai iced tea. MMMMmmm ?! Happy reads & happy eats!
I was excited to read this since I thought the idea of a world where Germany and Japan won WWII would be an interesting concept but I just struggled with this book.
I could not get into it and felt lost for most of it 🤷🏼♀️

#LitsyWalkers - Got a decent #audiowalk in today, as it was mild (around 50F) and sunny. Windy though. I‘m glad this huge branch didn‘t land on me! It wasn‘t there yesterday. 😳 I walked to Dunkin for a coffee again, admired the train tracks, and headed back home for a healthy meal with a friend. All in all a successful day! 🙌🏻
Survey Question - Would you count this as 1 book or 4 books?
I doubt I'll read any more than The Man in the High Castle. It went too much over my head and the premise was pretty frightening. I would hate to think about Germany and Japan winning and a concentration camp in NYC. Of course, because the occupying government was racist, some Americans took advantage of it to show their true colors. (shudder) If you read it, please help me understand.
After several days of treadmill due to unfit walking conditions, I finally ventured outside. It was 63F degrees (only 3 days ago it was -5!!!), but as you can see it‘s still icy and treacherous. It‘s going to get cold again, and more snow is supposedly on the way. But it did feel good to get out. I walked to the Dunkin‘ Donuts and got a coffee to reward myself for walking outside today. #LitsyWalkers #audiowalk
2.5/5
I am doing so horribly for #24in48 and #24B4Monday. I only managed to finish one book (crazy day). I also accidentally reset my reading timer. 🤦🏻♀️ Oh well, I must power-through! As for the one book I finished, I‘m pretty conflicted. I enjoyed the details of the alternate world and conceptually, the premise is very interesting. But, I did not enjoy his writing style (not enough emotion) and I didn‘t connect with any of the characters.
Book #3 for this year! Might need to up my goals 💪 #kindleread #kindle #booklife #maninthehighcastle #numberthree #januaryreading
#LitsyWalkers Day 2 - Cold again, and the sun was going down, and I was running on very little sleep...so a short walk today. But it was invigorating! And I found a creek that I didn‘t know was in that area. I heard the water bubbling over a small waterfall. It was soothing. Saw several deer, too. 🦌 #audiowalk
#BookNDinner! Accompaniment this cold and flurry-filled night: teriyaki and garlic-ranch wings; cheesesteak sandwich, French fries, a pickle, and beer. MMMmmmm 😋! Happy reads & happy eats! 👌🏻
#BookNLunch! Sandwich, V-8 juice, and a good book. Hoping to read most of this before Thursday‘s book club. I‘ve been wanting to watch the series, but was holding off until after I‘ve read it. Happy reads & happy eats!
#BookNDinner! #Thai Edition! On this cold and windy night: steamed salmon in ginger sauce with veggies and jasmine rice, paired with Thai iced tea. MMMMmmm 😋! Happy reads & happy eats!
Starting (another) new book today. 😁
finally started this today & i‘m loving it so far! 😍 it will be interesting to see how it compares to the amazon series- or rather, how the series compares to the book. for you dickheads out there who have both read the book & watched the show- what are your thoughts? 🖤 #myPKDjourney
