School for Good and Evil
School for Good and Evil | Soman Chainani
The New York Times bestselling The School for Good and Evil, the first book in the series, is an epic journey into a dazzling new world, where the only way out of a fairy tale is to live through one. This paperback edition features an Extras section, giving readers a chance to see which school they'd be in and a Q&A with the author, Soman Chainani. With her glass slippers and devotion to good deeds, Sophie knows she'll earn top marks at the School for Good and join the ranks of past students like Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Snow White. Meanwhile, Agatha, with her shapeless black frocks and wicked black cat, seems a natural fit for the villains in the School for Evil. The two girls soon find their fortunes reversed Sophie's dumped in the School for Evil to take Uglification, Death Curses, and Henchmen Training, while Agatha finds herself in the School for Good, thrust among handsome princes and fair maidens for classes in Princess Etiquette and Animal Communication. But what if the mistake is actually the first clue to discovering who Sophie and Agatha really are?"

Agatha and Sophie have solved the School Master‘s riddle - so now they should be able to go home. But I‘m only halfway through the book.

It got off to a slow start initially but picked up. It‘s not obvious where it‘s going yet, which is good. There were some odd vocabulary choices which didn‘t make sense to me.

This started out clever but am about a third into the book, and the characters are beginning to grate on me. So I am going to put this aside.
I'll just watch the movie for the summary. 😅

I always try and read books which my students say are their favourites, and this one was mentioned recently.
It‘s a fun take on the good/evil fairytale storyline, and I can understand why it‘s well liked.
For me though I found it a bit predictable, I listened to most of it on 2x speed.

I really liked the book, specially because the movie is really close to is. It is not like I saw an different story compared to the book. The book has even more specific details to make the story even better.

I work at a bookstore and I‘m sad to say I‘m woefully inadequate when it comes to reads for kids outside of what I read as a child or my two sons reading choices. This is my first read from the pile I brought home from work. I thought this was a very creative way to address fairytales. I may even make an attempt to watch the movie.

I wanted to read this book before the movie came out. Overall, I enjoyed it, but Sophie‘s character may be the most frustratingly shallow person of all time. I realize this is likely very intentional.

This was a struggle. Interesting idea, great premise, but it's a looooong and very odd book with a lot of massive plot holes...
For a middle grade book, this story had a surprising amount of darkness and cruelty.

I don't know whether this was because I was listening to the book rather than reading it but I found a lot of the descriptions off putting. There was a lot of comments on teenage bodies that bordered on skeevy and it really affected my enjoyment of the book

I don‘t know if the series gets any better after this book or not but I‘m not going to bother to find out. I really should have stopped when my brain started nit picking things that it found incredibly questionable and worrisome, and kept bothering me throughout. I wanted to see what the hype was for though and kept on, and really wished I hadn‘t.

Fantasy/ Fairytale
I was hooked when I read the first sentance the writer showed me the scene instead of telling it to me in a blunt and boring way. I have to admit I slowly started to lose motavation to read it but I was determined to find out what would happen to these two friends. I chose this book as a pick becayse it taught me that once you find your worth with the help of friends and family you only need them to be pure.

I really loved this book. It's a great dark twist on the magical school trope. The writing style is definitely developed with the older middle grade set in mind, but there are some dark & slightly more mature pieces that make it better suited for YA readers. The plot is fun & twisty with lots of entertaining moments. I just had a lot of fun reading this. It challenges the typical fairy tale tropes with a very flippant approach. Just a fun time.

Unfortunately, this one wasn't for me. I wanted to like it - the concept is super fun & there were some great ideas, but ultimately the "message" about good/evil/beauty/ugly/friendship just felt incredibly muddled. I also felt like the characters should have been significantly older than 12 - I was bothered by descriptive phrases like "her extremely short dress showed off long, creamy legs" written by a man describing a child.

It wasn't a bad ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) book, it just wasn't for me.

This series has been on my TBR forever, but I got my extra nudge to actually pick it up from my #NewYearWhoDis list - @Cupcake12 even though I didn't love this one, I'm glad that I read it!!! @monalyisha

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 4y
Roary47 On my list too. I‘ll have to see if I like it then. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick They're is something about the words creamy and milky that give me squicky vibes. *shudder* Then to use one to describe a child? Yikes! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick - There wasn't anything overtly sexual in the story, but there were several times that weird phrasing was used that left me wondering if I just have a dirty mind, or if there was strange subtext occurring. For instance, she's caught in a magical briar plant & a “dark & engorged“ thorn stabs at her. Another scene she sweeps into a room dressed skimpily & the boys “dribble in their laps“ - they're eating lunch so ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) theoretically food but... I don't know, the whole book felt off to me, but loads of people love it, so it's possible that my brain is the problem, not the writing! 😅 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Then we share a similar brain (or I've been listening to a few too many romance novels) because the are words I wouldn't associate with a MG or YA book. 😂 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick - I think the fact that it's marketed as a MG book is what made me feel off about these. When I'm reading a book I try to not only think about how much I like/dislike it, but also how it fits for its intended audience, & I wouldn't want to give this book to a 12-year-old. 😬 4y

My #weeklyforecast is about as uncertain as Ohio's (we should be getting somewhere between 2-12" of snow...super helpful prediction...) These are the next books on the shelf, but since the tagged is due back at the library, it will probably be the next one I pick up. If I like it, my reading will veer into the rest of the (quite chunky) series.

Meanwhile, trapped inside a Kindle book that is apparently 810 pages long. Yet another reason Kindle ⬇️

I think the author started they way he did to hook the reader in and not be able to take there eyes off the book. I belive he did a splended job of pulling the reader into the book once I started to read I couldn't put it down. In the book it shows not tell how scared people are when children dissapear and instead of telling the whole plot you need to look deeper to find the message within the book.

My two #LMPBC books (can't remember what's coming for me from #GroupR lol), Orient Express for #agathachristieclubr2, two books about Vietnam for #foodandlit, Mansfield Park for #PemberLittens, Of Beasts & ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Beauties for #Fairytalereadingchallenge (it's been on my Kindle forever!), 1984 for #thatsclassic AND Harry Potter for #Potteraday - I've been wanting to reread since I've been collecting the house editions, which are the British editions instead of American, which may be fun.
