Night Swim, The
Night Swim, The | Megan Goldin
After the first season of her true crime podcast became an overnight sensation and set an innocent man free, Rachel Krall is now a household name - and the last hope for thousands of people seeking justice. But she's used to being recognised for her voice, not her face. Which makes it all the more unsettling when she finds a note on her car windshield, addressed to her, begging for help. The small town of Neapolis is being torn apart by a devastating rape trial. The town's golden boy, a swimmer destined for Olympic greatness, has been accused of raping a high school student, the beloved granddaughter of the police chief. Under pressure to make Season Three a success, Rachel throws herself into interviewing and investigating - but the mysterious letters keep showing up in unexpected places. Someone is following her, and she won't stop until Rachel finds out what happened to her sister twenty-five years ago. Officially, Jenny Stills tragically drowned, but the letters insists she was murdered - and when Rachel starts asking questions, nobody seems to want to answer. The past and present start to collide as Rachel uncovers startling connections between the two cases that will change the course of the trial and the lives of everyone involved. Electrifying and propulsive, The Night Swim asks- What is the price of a reputation? Can a small town ever right the wrongs of its past? And what really happened to Jenny?

So, I finished this one late last night, but I am counting it as my first book of February - since I already did my January #WrapUp. I really enjoyed it. I found the polarization of rape cases pretty harrowing. I think it worked especially well as an audiobook because of the podcast aspect. But I think it would work well in print. Also, I am learning to crochet. #AudioCrochet

ElizaMarie @LiteraryinLawrence Thank you! They are a bit wonky, but I love it! I didn't have the right supplies (one is stuffed with an old hospital sock and one is stuffed with cotton rounds) but.. I am really proud of myself. I just got some real supplies yesterday with proper stuffing and safety eyes :) 10mo

Here are my #botm picks for August! I loved The Night Swim, which I listened to from the library, so I wanted to snag a copy as well as the new sequel Dark Corners. For my monthly pick I chose Family Lore as it‘s been getting a lot of buzz!

This was such an excellent mystery-thriller. I listened to this on audiobook (which I highly recommend due to this having podcast elements) and could not stop listening. I don‘t know why I haven‘t read this earlier as I have seen great reviews. I look forward to reading more by this author, this was my first Megan Goldin read. 5⭐️

I never reviewed this last year, so doing it now (not for points).

A popular true crime podcaster covers a live rape trial and begins to receive desperate pleas for help from a listener with a story to tell. As events unfold, this "sleepy" coastal town begins to show cracks in its façade, and a history of violence and rape culture starts to rear its ugly head.

It was well written. I like that they add the pod cast in as well. I won‘t lie it was def difficult to listen to in parts. Some parts are very graphic and depict rape scenes.

Picked this up from #Hoopla on a whim.
It was a good listen 🎧 kept me engaged but not anything unique or memorable.
A town divided over a rape charge brought against a well liked and highly respected young man from a prestigious community family.
When a podcast host comes to the town to attend the trial, she is caught up in a 25 year old mystery involving a HS girl who died under mysterious circumstances. Could these 2 stories be linked??

#Hoopla #ImpulseListen 🎧 I put aside my current audio and started this one.
A legal thriller involving a young girl who accuses a local boy, up & coming Olympian, of rape.
The podcast angle works really well on audio.

Is shaping a story around a fictional True Crime podcast notably clever or just a gimmick to capitalize on a popular trend???

I say the former, as the premise enabled a revolving investigation of 2 crimes - 1 past, 1 present. The book is good, but DARK. Graphic at times. Deeply unsettling & enraging. It‘s impossible not to be repulsed, by the fictional crimes discussed & the real ones (some known, some not) on which they are based.

Night Swim was everything I was looking for in a midweek, crime/thriller read. It‘s got a bit of an SVU flavour, and a healthy dose of interconnected past and present crimes. Goldin used a true crime podcast as an interesting and current narrative structure. The twists aren‘t obvious and this makes It compelling reading. Goldin also manages to make some thoughtful observations about the nature of generational privilege which added some depth.

I‘m really hoping we get a series out of this. Famous podcaster taking on cold and current cases. I would buy them all!

Gissy Yes, I wish the same. After I finished the novel my reaction was, are we going to have more stories in Rachel's post cast? 3y
OneBookishBabe @Gissy I hope so! I haven‘t looked up whether or not it would happen but I‘m hopeful lol 3y

Thanks for the tag @Ruthiella

1. Mystery, True Crime, Investigative, Justice

2. Spotify - I love to be surrounded by music and podcasts all the time

3. Maybe 1995? I‘d sort of love to relive my childhood with some new appreciation and perspective. The 90s were the best - a simpler time ❤️

Play along? @CBee @KVanRead @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Ruthiella I miss the ‘90s too! I picked 1998 mostly so I had more Friends episodes to watch! But 1995 would also be welcome. 😀 4y

A small town. A teenage rape trial. A murder/ rape that happened twenty years earlier. There were parts of this book that were upsetting and disturbing. Rachel has an investigative crime podcast and while she‘s investigating the current rape trial she discovers a whole other case from twenty years prior. I liked this book because it didn‘t drag on like a lot of crime novels do. This one stayed interesting. I give it 4 ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️. #botm

In this latest offering from Megan Goldin, Rachel, podcast extraordinaire, is covering a divisive trial where a prominent young college swimmer is accused of raping a high school girl. With everyone taking a side, the trial threatens to rip the town apart. With the trial just beginning, Rachel is contacted by Hannah Stills hoping that Rachel can solve the 25 year old death of her sister Jenny. A twisted tale with old ghosts reaching into real time

Rachal Krall, true crime podcaster is in Neapolis, NC rape case of Kelly, police chief granddaughter. 25 yrs ago Jenny Stills drowned. Her sister Hannah asks Rachel to investigate. Did Jenny drown or was she murdered? Are the cases related?
I enjoyed the audio version of this book as you get to hear Rachel's podcast of the courtroom proceedings. It is an emotional read as many feelings emerge about the rape as you are listening. Lots of twists.

Need a captivating, unsettling and emotional psychological thriller to keep you up at night?!? Get your hands on The Night Swim by Megan Goldin. It is right up there with (better than, I think) Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. It‘s impossible to put down and covers a serious and heavy issue - how our society (and legal system) treats victims of rape. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #audiobook #thriller #summerreading
