Mental Health Awareness: What You Need to Know about Mental Illness | Patricia a Carlisle
17 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
This book contains information on what causes Mental illness and other factors about how to maintain a healthier mental health. Millions of Americans live with various types of mental illness and mental health problems. Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions-disorders that affect your mood; thinking and behavior. Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors. Many people have mental health concerns from time to time. But a mental health concern becomes a mental illness when ongoing signs and symptoms cause frequent stress and affect your ability to function A mental illness can make you miserable and can cause problems in your daily life, such as at work or in relationships. In most cases, symptoms can be managed with a combination of medications and counseling (psychotherapy). Mental illness is any disease or condition that influences the way a person thinks, feel, behaves, and/or relates to others and to his or her surroundings. Although the symptoms of mental illness can range from mild to severe and are different depending on the type of mental illness, a person with an untreated mental illness often is unable to cope with life's daily routines and demands.

#ranttime I‘m so f‘n livid. Being homeless is not a crime. Drug addiction is not a crime. Mental health is not a crime. The current administration has just lumped 3 different issues into one. Criminalizing people with mental health disorders just puts them more at risk for being put in jail. As a mom of 3 neurodivergent kids this is horrific. This is going to make people more fearful to call for assistance if a person is having a mental health

ncsufoxes emergency for fear that their loved one will be met with police violence or taken to jail. This puts young teens and adults with Autism & co-occurring conditions (there is a high rate of co-occurrence with things like anxiety, depression) at greater risk. Having access to trained mental health professionals & medication management is what people need. Not to be institutionalized or jailed. People need more resources & access, not this. 6d
dabbe The ONLY reason I hit the heart button was to support YOU and all who will be affected by this. I just can't believe the f'n insanity and evil of this administration. Everything you said ... 🎯🩵🎯🩵🎯🩵 6d
Aims42 I‘m with @dabbe on the reason behind ‘hearting‘ this incredibly horrific update 😔💔 You said it, “people need more resources and access, NOT THIS!” ✊🏻 6d

TheBookHippie 1930s Germany has arrived… eugenics. This puts so many people at massive risk. I‘m so exasperated and angry … evil incarnate. 6d
CBee I‘m just…… I don‘t even know what to say. @ncsufoxes so many people, including my youngest son and your kids, could be affected by this. Heck, I have a depression and anxiety diagnosis - will they lock me up too? 😡 6d
ncsufoxes Not to mention how Kennedy wants to limits kids access to medications & his dismissal of mental health medications. My kid is finally stable (after years of trying different combos, one combo that left him neutropenic during the pandemic). These people don‘t understand the exhaustion of monitoring, worrying, planning that is involved with kids with mental health conditions. There is also a shortage of psychiatrists & psychologists in the US as it 6d
ncsufoxes is. The new caps on medical school student loans will further reduce the amount of qualified professionals in the future. I can‘t even begin to describe the bad doctors & unhelpful info we‘ve gotten over the years. As a country we were moving away from institutions because they were not found to be the best way to treat people. There has been so much research into evidence based & community based treatments over the last few years. They are also 6d
Susanita Taking us back to the 1800s when America was great 🤬 6d
ncsufoxes further stereotyping people with mental health conditions. Painting them as erratic & dangerous. Is this administration also going to account for all of the dismantling of programs that significantly impacts all of these groups. 6d
ncsufoxes @TheBookHippie exactly. Currently everything they are doing to the disability community & mental health community is eugenics, plain & simple. 6d
ncsufoxes @Dabbe & @Aims42 🫶🏻💓 6d
ncsufoxes @CBee like we don‘t have enough to worry about already. It‘s just exhausting & exasperating 6d
TheBookHippie @ncsufoxes Yup. Trying to make safety networks as fast as we can. So much all at once is the plan of this orange Satan ... The ACLU is working all the time I tell everyone just send them 5 bucks I promise they‘ll use it for good. I‘m doing all I can with the ability I have. It‘s all any of us can do. 6d
AnnCrystal WHAT THE 🤬🤬🤬... 6d
CBee @ncsufoxes right there with you ♥️😥 6d
Amiable Every damn day with this cruel and heartyadministration. Every. Damn. Day. 😩🤬 6d
KadaGul If all homelessness, drug addiction, and mental illness are crimes, then they had better finish constructing those prisons by tomorrow because the number of people who fall in those categories is in triple digits. #ANOTHERDUMBIDEABYMANGO 6d
Deblovestoread Right on point! 🤬🤬🤬 6d
Librarybelle Ugh 🤬 6d
ncsufoxes @KadaGul the point too is that they want to criminalize people & have them sit in prison. Prisons are now privatized, many of our lawmakers get funded by groups that benefit from private prisons (our attorney generals family is owner of a company that builds ICE prisons). Private prisons can charge the govt tons of money. There are too many people with mental health conditions in the general prison population & get denied meds. Not to mention 6d
ncsufoxes there are almost 800,000 homeless people in this country (that‘s the best estimate by advocacy groups). The numbers only going to grow with loss of jobs, rising costs, cuts to Veterans services, cuts to Section 8 housing. Our country has over 4 million people in the prison system (on bail, in jail, on parole). It‘s higher than any other nation. Now they‘re giving the green light to increase those numbers. For this false narrative of 6d
ncsufoxes characterizing people in these groups as dangerous. It‘s again another horrific policy that will make things worse. 6d
KadaGul Our criminal system was never meant to punish a criminal. It is designed to put shackles on a group of people they don't like. If it were meant for criminals, our crime rate wouldn't be where it is today. 6d
Eggbeater Hearing this was traumatic. 6d
Billypar Yeah, you're 100% right. It's a nonstop trainwreck. I'm very disappointed that New York has put similar legislation into effect (though our governor also invested a lot in mental health, so not the same by any stretch). I think a lot about how those who follow him who are supposedly Christians and/or 'fiscal hawks'... such hypocrisy on a massive scale. 5d

1. A day late but I was feeling good, spent the day with an old friend waxing poetic about this and that was so uplifting.

2. I am edgy from some nerve pain so I‘m going to try to listen more and not engage in negative talk while I let the medication and PT start to do its work. Lots of deep breathing.

TheSpineView Hope the medicine works for you and you feel better soon! 🤞💞 2mo

1) The news today was horrific so I bounce between anger and despair. However, I worked today and the sun shone bright and warm so I did have breaks from the doom & gloom.
2) I have never been able to use positive affirmations, just not my thing.

@Kerrbearlib

1. Sleepy 😴
2. Negative. I had to completly overhaul my IG because I was just doom scrolling. I have Rednote for calm videos, Tiktok is a mix of fun and frustrating, IG is bookish nerdy stuff, and FB I only look at for neighborhood updates (HOA/events) bc it's too frustrating.
3 Yes. But honestly its my husband that makes me take them when I get worked up. 🤣

@Kerrbearlib

Kerrbearlib It‘s interesting how some social media platforms can be worse than others for our mental health. LOL my husband has told me to take breaks too 🤣 What kind of videos do you like on Rednote? 4mo
InkedBookworm13 @Kerrbearlib I watch videos of other countries cooking, Old Man's Joy videos (tiny cars/trikes), shopping (other countries vs US price/items), Americans life in other countries (mostly China and Germany) and cute animals 4mo

1. Tired physically and emotionally
2. I usually journal, go for walks, and do CrossFit. Something new I‘m trying recently is breathwork/meditation.
3. What books people have read on the topic of mental health/psychology, maybe advice people are willing to share that they‘ve gotten from a therapist that was a game-changer.

#mentalhealthmonday @Kerrbearlib

Kerrbearlib Sorry for the late response! I hope you are feeling more rested today. Those are great ways to practice self-care. I've never tried CrossFit but heard good things. I love the idea of sharing books people have read on the topic of mental health and sharing advice from therapists! Thanks for responding! 6mo

I saw this on the Human Rights Campaign on Facebook.

I didn‘t even know July was BIPOC Mental Health Month. Did anyone else?

These came at the perfect moment because I was just trying to figure out how to ask these questions to my therapist regarding racism, oppression and the mental health impact of them.
