Portrait of a Scotsman
Portrait of a Scotsman | Evie Dunmore
41 posts | 45 read | 26 to read
Going toe-to-toe with a brooding Scotsman is rather bold for a respectable suffragist, but when he happens to be one's unexpected husband, what else is an unwilling bride to do? London banking heiress Hattie Greenfield wanted just three things in life: 1. Acclaim as an artist. 2. A noble cause. 3. Marriage to a young lord who puts the gentle in gentleman. Why then does this Oxford scholar find herself at the altar with the darkly attractive financier Lucian Blackstone, whose murky past and ruthless business practices strike fear in the hearts of Britain's peerage? Trust Hattie to take an invigorating little adventure too far. Now she's stuck with a churlish Scot who just might be the end of her ambitions.... When the daughter of his business rival all but falls into his lap, Lucian sees opportunity. As a self-made man, he has vast wealth but holds little power, and Hattie might be the key to finally setting long-harbored political plans in motion. Driven by an old revenge, he has no room for his new wife's apprehensions or romantic notions, bewitching as he finds her. But a sudden journey to Scotland paints everything in a different light. Hattie slowly sees the real Lucian and realizes she could win everything--as long as she is prepared to lose her heart.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was a great reread looking ahead to the new book coming out next month.
This one takes me a bit longer to get into than the first, but I do love how Dunmore focuses even more on the politics of that time period alongside the romance.
So excited for book 4!

This was not my fav in the series but I do enjoy these regardless. This is Hattie's story.

Mehso-so

I didn‘t like this book as much as the other two in the series. The main character is a spoiled brat for much of the book and doesn‘t grow much as a character.
As a rich banker‘s spoiled daughter, Hattie is used to getting her way, her surprise is great when she is married off a man others fear due to her poor choices. She learns her husband does a lot of good and when he refused to give up his vengeance for her she runs away.
2.5/5 stars.

Like the other two books in the series, this was a low pick / so-so for me. There was some good stuff, but the female main character grated on my nerves. The narrator gave her a high, breathy voice which was also quite grating… so I was more than ready to move on by the end of the book.

I enjoyed Bringing Down the Duke but was disappointed in this novel in the same series. It aims to be a feminist love story, but it is more a silly romance. The book starts with a preposterous scene orchestrated by a stranger with a bad rep, Mr. Blackstone, to put Harriet, an heiress, into a compromising position that will force her father to marry her to him. It isn't all that compromising, but Harriet just goes along with the plan. ⏬

LitStephanie Mr. Blackstone decides to try to help her with her concerns about women miners he employs and thinks about applying pressure for some legislation she favors (his motivation seems to be just pleasing her, which seems unlikely), but she is just so naive and falls for this guy so immediately that it feels unbelievable. Eventually, she does exercise some autonomy, but it is too late, and by the time it happens, it seems out of character. 1y

Wonderful! I think Dunmore‘s novels get better as the series goes along. Hattie was a great character and Lucien was the perfect pirate villain with a heart of gold 😍 Gotta love a bad boy! #romantsy

did not realize this is book 3 of a series, glad they‘re not connected lol. this was cute though and had surprising depth and surprise feminism from a historic romance, shocked and thrilled. love a good brooding Scotsman.

One more post before bed. Here are my #FebruaryStats

Finished 12 books and only because I listened to 3 pretty short audiobooks. I was originally going to read romances but didn‘t get very far. All were good or great. No truly awful books this month. I did bail on 1 book and got 53%. I probably should have marked it on this. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView

1) I'd love books, but Valentine's isn't celebrated in Germany and I'm single. I could get myself a book, though. #selflove

2) I'm tagging the last historical romance I read, it was very good and very feminist. But it doesn't have VD in it.

Well-written, well-researched historical romance. Tackling so many topics.

Need to read the other two books in this series.

Really enjoyed this one! I love this series of romance books. I loved Hattie in the other books so I couldn‘t wait to read this one. Glad I finally got to it! I found a lot of typos in this book, but overall I loved this one.

I‘ve seen a lot of typos and errors in this book, but this one might be the worst…

“Them as” 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

DGRachel I‘ve noticed a lot of typos in books lately (new/recent releases) and I wonder if some of it is pandemic related - editors, proofreaders, etc not being as sharp as they used to be just from the long term stress. 🤔 2y
Laughterhp @DGRachel That‘s a good question. In her acknowledgments, she does say this was written during the pandemic. I don‘t read a ton of new releases, but the ones I have read do seem to have a lot of issues. 2y

A quick, fun romance read with a nice arc for our leading lady and a wonderful rogue of a leading man. Just the thing to kick off my BFF readathon Up North! I know that starting with this book gets me out of series order, and now I'm looking forward to going back to the beginning with all of the characters in this world.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I loved this book!
There was brooding, character development, slow burn with a big payoff, and Scotland. What more could I ask?I enjoyed Hattie‘s character & how she was such a foil to Lucian without seeming overly silly. &I loved how Dunmore chose to end the story - I didn‘t see it coming, but it was very satisfying. After being disappointed by book 2, this was a great read, and I‘ll still continue to read all Dunmore writes.

Each October, my two best friends and I spend a weekend at a cottage #UpNorth for a reading retreat. We do take walks and enjoy the outdoors and have the occasional heart-to-heart; but primarily we sit in companionable silence and tear through as many books as we can. It's my favorite, most indulgent weekend of the year, and though it's still a couple weeks away, I'm already beginning to make my book selections for the trip! #MittenLitten

IMO these are the best romance novels going!!!

CoffeeAndABook Just finished reading the first book in this series ~ and loved it so much!! Is this one just as good? 2y
mcctrish @CoffeeAndABook I inhaled the first 2 and had to wait a month for this one, I‘m glad I had some space between them truthfully. They sort of follow a pattern story wise but the underlying story of the suffragette story extends on through all 3. You only see snippets of the other women going forward. I really love them all 2y
CoffeeAndABook @mcctrish * thanks, that‘s very helpful!! I‘ll give a little, but not too much time between books 😉 what a great series! I‘m so glad I found it ~ thanks to Litsy, of course 😁 2y

Didn‘t like the female lead. She was whiny and annoyed me. Loved the male lead because his character had more depth and a better backstory. Ending was rushed and made zero sense. Had five star potential but ended up ⭐️⭐️½ for me. And I loved the first book in this series! What happened? ☹️

Banking heiress, suffragette, and aspiring artist Hattie Greenfield is in over her head when an errant kiss leads her straight into the marriage bed of the self-made Scottish financier Lucian Blackstone, a man whose reputation is as dark as Hattie's prospects of marrying the gentleman she's always imagined. Thrilling, tender, steamy, and full of rich historical context around women's rights, social justice, and life and love in Victorian England!
