Moonglow LP | Michael Chabon
Following on the heels of hisNew York Timesbestselling novelTelegraph Avenue, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon delivers another literary masterpiece: a novel of truth and lies, family legends, and existential adventure and the forces that work to destroy us.In 1989, fresh from the publication of his first novel, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, Michael Chabon traveled to his mother s home in Oakland, California, to visit his terminally ill grandfather. Tongue loosened by powerful painkillers, memory stirred by the imminence of death, Chabon s grandfather shared recollections and told stories the younger man had never heard before, uncovering bits and pieces of a history long buried and forgotten. That dreamlike week of revelations forms the basis for the novel Moonglow, the latest feat of legerdemain from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon.Moonglow unfolds as the deathbed confession of a man the narrator refers to only as my grandfather. It is a tale of madness, of war and adventure, of sex and marriage and desire, of existential doubt and model rocketry, of the shining aspirations and demonic underpinnings of American technological accomplishment at midcentury, and, above all, of the destructive impact and the creative power of keeping secrets and telling lies. It is a portrait of the difficult but passionate love between the narrator s grandfather and his grandmother, an enigmatic woman broken by her experience growing up in war-torn France. It is also a tour de force of speculative autobiography in which Chabon devises and reveals a secret history of his own imagination. From the Jewish slums of prewar South Philadelphia to the invasion of Germany, from a Florida retirement village to the penal utopia of New York s Wallkill prison, from the heyday of the space program to the twilight of the American Century, the novel revisits an entire era through a single life and collapses a lifetime into a single week. A lie that tells the truth, a work of fictional nonfiction, an autobiography wrapped in a novel disguised as a memoir, Moonglow is Chabon at his most moving and inventive."

Got a bit of a backlog to post here so here‘s an audio of a hardcover I finished earlier this year!

I ended up liking and not liking this as much as I wanted. I was looking for more Big Fish than what it gave, but that assumption from the blurb was on me. Overall it was really touching and adventurous, but I did unhaul it after I was done.

It did make me cry- so take that for what it‘s worth lol

I love when books catch the complexity of being human. Memory is weird, no one is 100% good or bad, our relationships are complicated. A grandfather is dying and in that last week, his meds loosen his usually still tongue. His grandson, Mike Chabon, is there to record the torn bits of memory that fall loose and piece them together. I adored this & can‘t wait to read more. I would like to look up his wife, Ayelet Waldman b/c they are too cute. ☺️

Finished setting up my #roll100 list yesterday just in time for @PuddleJumper ‘s post this morning. I have a double list with two titles to choose from for each number.

January‘s rolls are:
96. Mary Called Magdalene 📖 Early Riser
84. It Takes a Villa 📖 Moonglow
44. Chasing Portraits 📖 The Swans of Fifth Avenue

I think Moonglow has been on my shelf the longest so I‘m going to start there. Hoping to get to at least one title each month.

I liked this meander through the larger than life story of Chabon‘s grandfather. Like so much in life, there are moments that make up a life that only hindsight can make into some sort of sense, and even then we question what is really true or chosen truth. This book catches the spirit of that.

For the most part, I enjoyed this book and I loved getting to know all of the characters. The war sections, however, tended to drag on and didn‘t really fit the tone of the rest of the story.

Moonglow tells the story of the narrator's grandfather's life out of linear sequence. The dominant motif is space travel, rocketry, and, yes, the moon. A lot of it is about family trauma, but it isn't especially grim. Chabon is a very funny writer even when covering darker subjects.

The construction was interesting, interspersing historical, recent, and contemporary memories in an end-of-life recounting type of style in this memoir of the author learning about his grandfather more deeply. However, the book could hardly keep my attention. I cared very little about what was going on.

#AyUpAugust Another book that‘s either a love/ hate with readers 🤷‍♀️ I totally fell for Chabon‘s grandfather a #MardyBum with a heart of gold. Chabon is telling the life of his grandfather as told to him in his dying days. He‘s a larger than life man - kind of Ove with a dash of Leo Gursky and some Sheldon Cooper, too! Blurred lines of truth & fiction fuse to create a wild tale.

Lola I love Michael Chabon and even though I bought this when it came out, I haven‘t read it yet 🙃 So glad to know you loved it! 5y

Lots of jokes before page 1, huh Mr. Chabon?
This isn't quite as metafictional as it sounds going in, but it is a phony memoir in the vein of Roth's Operation Shylock. The key difference is, instead of Chabon going on some kind of crazy adventure, he's relaying #thestory of his grandparents, as told to him by his dying grandfather. Like the other Chabon's I've read, I didn't gobble this up, just savored every word. Thanks for the rec @Cinfhen !

KarenUK I love the sound of this.... thanks for sharing. Stacked! 📚 5y

This is hard to review - parts of it I really liked and parts of it I didn‘t.
Ostensibly Chabon is telling the life of his grandfather as told to him in his dying days. He‘s a brusque, larger than life man - kind of Ove with a side of Macgyver and John McClane. There are some great WW2 and prison stories as well as his love his for Chabon‘s complex and mentally ill grandmother, a French refugee - a whole lot about rockets and the space race too⬇️

Centique I couldn‘t help but notice every female character at some point has their breast size explained - which made me roll my eyes. But over all some great, colourful adventures that I think I‘ll remember for a while. 3.5 maybe 4 stars? 6y
CarolynM One of my book group friends loves this one (she loves everything by Michael Chabon) but I've never quite got there. 6y
merelybookish This was all about the grandmother for me! But I found a lot of it long and slow. 6y

Jess7 @emilyhaldi please shake your phone and report it. Let them know since the new iPhone update - we can‘t see our screen to type out captions. It doesn‘t seem to be impacting comments - just captions. Hopefully they will fix it ASAP if enough people complain. 7y
britt_brooke I've held out on doing the update because of the Litsy issues. I've heard that a work around is to write your caption first then add your photo. 7y
Jess7 That‘s super annoying! Mine automatically updated last night. 😒 Thanks for the tip. I would think once Litsy finds out this is a pervasive problem for its iPhone users it will fix it. I just hope enough people report it. @britt_brooke (edited) 7y
Izai.Amorim A way around it is to write first and add the picture when you‘re done. If you insert the picture first you can‘t see the text. At least that‘s the way on my iPod. 7y
Jess7 Thanks @Izai.Amorim I may try that in the interim, but I‘m hoping if you, me and enough people tell Litsy about the problem, they should be able to issue an update to fix this issue. I‘m sure it‘s like anything else - Litsy needs to know how many people this is impacting so they can decide whether it‘s enough to fix the problem on a large scale. (edited) 7y

Yes yes Chabon is back and he is on fire. Moonglow is a book that commands you to suspend disbelief, expertly blurring the lines between memoir and novel. I was so enthralled I didn't care where the truth begun or ended. At its heart, Moonglow is a book about identity, memory, family, mental health, the things that make us who we are, the people who populate our lives, and most of all the things we say and the things we don't. I was mesmerised.
