LONGLISTED FOR THE BAILEY S WOMEN S PRIZE FOR FICTIONFrom Attica Locke, a writer and producer of FOX s Empire, this sophisticated thriller sees lawyer Jay Porter hero of her bestseller Black Water Rising return to fight one last case, only to become embroiled in a dangerous game of shadowy politics and a witness to how far those in power are willing to go to win.Fifteen years after his career-defining case against Cole Oil, Jay Porter is broke and tired. That victory might have won the environmental lawyer fame, but thanks to a string of appeals, he hasn't seen a dime. His latest case representing Pleasantville in the wake of a chemical fire is dragging on, shaking his confidence and raising doubts about him within this upwardly mobile black community on Houston's north side. Though Jay still believes in doing what's right, he is done fighting other people's battles. Once he has his piece of the settlement, the single father is going to devote himself to what matters most his children. His plans are abruptly derailed when a female campaign volunteer vanishes on the night of Houston's mayoral election, throwing an already contentious campaign into chaos. The accused is none other than the nephew and campaign manager of one of the leading candidates a scion of a prominent Houston family headed by the formidable Sam Hathorne. Despite all the signs suggesting that his client is guilty and his own misgivings Jay can't refuse when a man as wealthy and connected as Sam asks him to head up the defense. Not if he wants that new life with his kids. But he has to win.Plunging into a shadowy world of ambitious enemies and treacherous allies armed with money, lies, and secrets, Jay reluctantly takes on his first murder trial a case that will put him and his client, and an entire political process, on trial."

A tight election, a missing girl, political machinations, murder, this book has it all. I think I‘d call it an intellectual mystery, since it‘s so deftly and tightly woven, with a complex story that Locke beautifully lays out. You don‘t want to take your eyes off it. It‘s just masterful.

While it took a while for me to engage (which in our current times might have nothing to do with the book), I ended up devouring the last half in two days. This is Locke‘s second book featuring lawyer Jay Porter. Set in Houston in the 90s, the combination of murder and local politics sets the stage for Porter to either succeed or spectacularly fail depending upon whether he can focus and finally leave the past in the past. Recommended. 4/5 ⭐️

Another excellent legal thriller from Attica Locke. Like most of her books, this one is set in a small Texas town and she captures the setting and people of the area very well.

This is the second in a series and we learn lots of new facts about the main character, which I was happy about since I felt a little cheated in the first book. The murder/mystery was intriguing and held my attention. Great read!

I rd black water rising when it came out so after bluebird bluebird last yr i loved going back to this brilliant authors writing + the world of lawyer jay porter. Older, jaded by work& grief with 2 children he is drawn into political intrigue as he unwillingly takes on a murder trial putting himself in danger whilst losing clients in a class action against a chemical co. I love legal thrillers, this is up with the best, hope to see jay again soon.

Delightful beach vacation destination? Certainly NOT! Attica Locke writes about the unsavory events in Houston politics, crime, and race relations in very entertaining ways. Rich with characters and subplots that may leave you struggling to keep up with lawyer Jay Porter, all will be rewarded by the satisfying end.

This book was so fun to read! A twisty, fast-paced, smart legal thriller/mystery, complete with courtroom drama, that I did not want to put down. Characters are well-developed and individual, and the writing is very strong. I haven‘t read the first Jay Porter book and had no trouble keeping up. I do plan to go back and read the first, though—Porter is a great character.

I generally don‘t like legal or political thrillers so this one took me a while to get into. Same with her previous book featuring Jay Porter, black activist turned lawyer. But I think this one was better than her debut so I‘m giving it a pick. Jay comes to the defense of the relative of a mayoral candidate of Pleasantville, a majority minority population, in his first criminal murder trial. There‘s also shady campaign dealings on both sides.

Attica Locke is an amazing author. I enjoyed catching up with Jay Porter and seeing his life and career after the first book. This book was smart with layers of political intrigue. The characters and emotional dynamics are always strong and relatable. The ending was satisfying and in no way predictable. I hope we get another Jay Porter book@in the future. I highly recommend this book and any of Attica books.

No photo to accompany this review. I‘m usually not interested in legal or political thrillers but I couldn‘t put this book down! Political intrigue, courtroom drama, and a murder mystery surround the Pleasantville neighborhood in Houston. I wondered why she set the novel in 1996 but then I understood what she was doing. Read it!!

Read this book when you're ready to get absorbed in a good mystery. The primary characters are people with whom you enjoy spending time, and the plot is satisfyingly complex.

Book 12: A political thriller - not the style I usually reach for except when I've worked through a holiday reading pile and have to resort to sharing someone's airport fiction purchase... However, Pleasantville is a step above, crafted plot and strong characterisation - and almost cinematic in its telling. Research tells me it's protagonist Jay Porter features in one of Locke's earlier novels - another for the TBR.

Prairiegirl_reading Cool!! I have Pleasantville on mount tbr. I should get on it! Must learn to read faster! 8y
Ruri_kaichou Oh my gosh! Is there any way you could get me some info on how you and your group did 'blind date with a book'? There was some initial interest with my book club to do one but we are all across the country so how to have people choose can be an issue. If I can borrow your idea, I may be able to get something going. 8y
sprainedbrain @Ruri_kaichou we are all over the country, too, so I'm sure you can make it work. We use the Slack app to communicate with each other, and @PatriciaU set up a special channel for us to post our wrapped books with clues attached. On the planned date at the scheduled time, we all commented on the book we wanted, and first comment won that book. Then we just mailed our book to the winner. 😃 (edited) 8y
Ruri_kaichou Gotcha! So the person who chose the book is not anonymous... Just the wrapped book? A lot of members don't use Slack but I'm sure it will work in our FB group. Thank you! 8y
sprainedbrain @Ruri_kaichou That's correct, we knew who chose the book, just not what the books was. 😃 8y
Bookworm83 @Ruri_kaichou Maybe we could set up a Slack account for the CO Litsy group. Hmmmmmm..... 🤔🤔 8y
Ruri_kaichou @Bookworm83 that's a great idea! 8y

Simply outstanding. This is the third Attica Locke book I've read and it's a fine piece of work. Building on the racial and political tension established in Black Water Rising, Jay Porter returns over a decade later, older, wearier but just as unwilling to let things slide.

This is a first rate political thriller that cements Ms Locke's place in the pantheon alongside Walter Mosley, James Ellroy, George Pelecanos and Dennis Lehane.

Election night in Houston. 1996. African American community of Pleasantville. A young woman has disappeared. Lawyer and former black power activist Jay Porter is the main character trying to hold his life together after the recent death of his wife while dealing with mayoral political intrigue and an investigation into the woman's kidnapping/disappearance. Lot going on but really enjoyed it.

I love Attica Locke's books but haven't really seen them much on Litsy so this is gonna be my pick for under-hyped book. A smart and intense political murder-mystery, this is actually a sequel of sorts to Black Water Rising. But you could easily read it on its own. Locke's The Cutting Season is also a great read. Pleasantville was longlisted for the Baileys Women's Prize. I really think it ought to have been shortlisted!! #augustphotochallenge

For Locke, this fiction of a deteriorating American Dream is of a representative, transparent body politic, which she intricately analyzes and dissects in the bureaucratic machinations that exploit a young woman‘s death and unapologetically implicate an innocent man.
