Black Water Rising
Black Water Rising | Attica Locke
Black Water Rising was shortlisted for the Orange Prize, nominated for an Edgar Award, an NAACP Image Award and a Los Angeles Times Book Prize. On a dark night, out on the Houston bayou to celebrate his wife's birthday, Jay Porter hears a scream. Saving a distressed woman from drowning, he opens a Pandora's Box. Not the lawyer he set out to be, Jay long ago made peace with his radical youth, tucked away his darkest sins and resolved to make a fresh start. His impulsive act out on the bayou is heroic, but it puts Jay in danger, ensnaring him in a murder investigation that could cost him is practice, his family and even his life. Before he can untangle the mystery that stretches to the highest reaches of corporate power, he must confront the demons of his past. A provocative thriller with an exhilarating climax, Black Water Rising marks the arrival of an electrifying new talent.

I think I may incorporate my new moon light in all of my book photos. 😂

Great pick for #LMPBC, Tammy! I somehow managed to read the second Jay Porter book first (also loved it), but that didn‘t give me any issues reading this. Courtroom mysteries aren‘t usually my thing, but I love the way Attica Locke writes, and Jay is such a wonderfully complicated character. I loved the way the book kept dipping into his past.

Good on many levels!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Butterfinger Glad you liked it Jenni. 3y
janeycanuck Moon light? What is a moon light?! 3y
sprainedbrain @janeycanuck it‘s a little battery operated light that looks like the moon! @wanderinglynn sent it to me for Basic Witch and I‘m sort of obsessed with it. 😂 3y
wanderinglynn I admit I bought myself one too! ? I found it at Daiso, which is a 100¥ store. We‘d call it a dollar store, but Daiso is WAY better than what we know a dollar store is. Daiso is awesome. 3y
sprainedbrain @wanderinglynn it‘s so cute! My 9-year-old keeps trying to steal it from me, but he already got most of the candy so I‘m not giving it up. 😂 3y

Attica Locke was my first thought for this week's #integrateyourshelf prompt! Have read her Highway 69 books (Bluebird Bluebird and Heaven my Home), have got The Cutting Season to read but need to get the other 2!

I reckon I should be allowed bonus points for sticking to my team's theme, but it's 1pt for participation only, taking me to 480pts for #teamslaughter @Clwojick #scarathlon2020

@ChasingOm @Emilymdxn

ChasingOm Oooh, I love Attica Locke!!! 3y
jenniferw88 @ChasingOm I love her too - she's an autobuy author for me. This series reminds me of her Highway 59 books - you might like to try it (have tagged the first) 3y

Currently reading Find Me as it‘s a 2 week loan from the library. I‘m about 50 pages in and it‘s good so far.

My first Attica Locke! Incorporating US & political history via flashbacks to lawyer Jay Porter‘s earlier years of protest, seeking justice during the late sixties, his jail time & trial. Moles, wire tapping, FBI infiltration- links to the present as Jay unexpectedly finds himself in the middle of a quagmire of a murder investigation that endangers his life, his family, his work.Kept me guessing! Thanks to @Butterfinger !

Attica Locke does such a great job of capturing the people and setting of East Texas.

This was a great mystery/thriller fueled with racial tension and a lawyer just fighting to get justice for the little guy.

Jay is an African American lawyer in 1980‘s Houston with a flailing law practice and a pregnant wife and a past that has broken him and left him a prisoner of his own fear. And then he rescues a woman who may have been fleeing an abusive lover or may be a murderer. Whatever it is Jay is afraid of getting involved but just seems to be pulled deeper and deeper into a web of lies, corruption and violence. I loved it.

Read Bluebird, Bluebird and became a fan immediately. This is her first book, and it‘s equally impressive. Ex-radical activist turned community lawyer is just trying to make a living, and is sucked onto a whirlpool of political and corporate corruption during Houston‘s oil boom. He and his pregnant wife are witnesses to a murder, and he is reluctantly drawn into an union strike. Evocative of the city and the times; racism and betrayal the same.

I loved this protagonist and his backstory. Corporate greed, loss of youthful idealism, lots more. Thank you, Attica Locke, for proving that a great plot doesn‘t mean wooden characters and bad dialogue. I‘m not naming any names.

Do you ever just pick up a book and realize that while there is nothing really wrong with it, you just don't like it? This is how I felt reading this one. It has all the elements that I normally enjoy in a crime novel but I found my mind wandering while I read it and the pacing was a little slow. I've heard really good things about this author's most recent novel and I've really wanted to try her stuff and I still intend to. 2.5🌟 #87of2018

Dragon I haven‘t read this one but I liked 6y
arubabookwoman I liked this one, but I‘m very familiar with Houston. On the other hand, I didn‘t like her latest, so if you ever wanted to try her again, that would not be the one I‘d recommend. 6y

Ok it's hella late and I worked too much and my brain is half asleep so just gonna say that this was enjoyable and gripping at times, but a wee bit implausible at others. Did like the author's writing style and the characters, and will definitely read more from her. Hoping her work gets stronger chronologically. 3/5 ⭐️

Oil, race and murder combine in this slowly simmering #debut novel set in 1980's Houston. Attica Locke draws the reader in through description so expertly crafted that you feel the humidity of the bayou settling on your skin. Some characters could be more attentively drawn and the ending, while satisfying and believable, clearly points toward a continuation of the plot in a following book. I will definitely read more by Locke. 4/5 ⭐️

I have no shortage of books to read here at my palace, but that does not keep me from wandering into my local library with book lust on a very regular basis. This week, I literally just grabbed a book off the shelf that caught my eye and took it home without so much as a glance at the jacket blurbs...so spontaneous!...and this is how I met Attica Locke. I *loved* BWR and quickly went back to snag Pleasantville. READING IS SO MUCH DAMN FUN!

Gritty, atmospheric drama set in Houston in the early '80's. Jay Porter is scraping by as a lawyer when he sees a woman drowning one night. From there, the story bends and weaves, touching on issues of race, economics, the oil industry and political corruption. Very well constructed.

Mehso-so

I wavered between pick and so-so for this one. The characters are interesting and the writing is good, but the story seemed about 100 pages too long to me.
