The Teller of Small Fortunes
The Teller of Small Fortunes | Julie Leong
A wandering fortune teller finds an unexpected family in this warm and wonderful debut fantasy, perfect for readers of Travis Baldree and Sangu Mandanna.
Tao is an immigrant fortune teller, traveling between villages with just her trusty mule for company. She only tells "small" fortunes: whether it will hail next week; which boy the barmaid will kiss; when the cow will calve. She knows from bitter experience that big fortunes come with big consequences…
Even if it’s a lonely life, it’s better than the one she left behind. But a small fortune unexpectedly becomes something more when a (semi) reformed thief and an ex-mercenary recruit her into their desperate search for a lost child. Soon, they’re joined by a baker with a knead for adventure, and—of course—a slightly magical cat.
Tao sets down a new path with companions as big-hearted as her fortunes are small. But as she lowers her walls, the shadows of her past are closing in—and she’ll have to decide whether to risk everything to preserve the family she never thought she could have.

5/5

Tao is a traveling fortune teller who only tells small fortunes to avoid the mage guild's notice. She meets a thief, an ex-mercenary looking for his daughter, Leah, and a baker as they travel across Eshtera reading fortunes and looking for Leah.

This was a really wonderful book that did a great job including low stakes adventures, found family, and loneliness while feeling like a fresh cozy fantasy story.

This book flirts on the edge between cosy low stakes fantasy and fantasy quite well. Coulda have gone either way right up til the end. Well done. 4.25 ⭐️

If a man is a reformed thief/bandit… is he still considered morally grey? Cause I have immediately fallen in love with Silt because he seems to be a chaos gremlin… and I respect that.

The tagged book was my favorite read of December. I‘m okay posting this since my current read is probably not going to be a favorite. It‘s also definitely not going to beat my 2024 Book of the Year, The Bone Shard Daughter! 💚💚

This was a nice cozy fantasy. Low stakes adventure with characters becoming family.

4/5 ⭐️ Audio. So that might be why the story was hard to follow at times. Otherwise, this was an adorable little fun book to follow along these ragamuffins. Sweet, no high stakes, story where a misunderstanding is really just that which changes the perspective. This is a found family trope for those of an aunts and uncles level. I wish there was more of those little parts to get their each 1v1 connections.

I‘ve decided I‘m done with challenge reading for the year and am only mood reading until the New Year. Starting the tagged today while I get a bit of outside time with the dog.

Being sick has been great for my reading! I‘ve finished so many books in the last week. This is a debut light fantasy novel. It‘s a found family, traveling journey story. Tao is a fortune teller, but only small fortunes. She tried to keep her magic use to a minimum. She meets a bunch of characters and they start traveling together, looking for Mash‘s missing daughter.

This book was just lovely but at the same time deals with prejudices.

This book is a warm hug and so sweet it could likely be substituted for a cup sugar in seasonal baking. I think what worked for me with this collection of misfits was it was less about how the world did them wrong as it was about how each believed themselves unworthy until they opened themselves up to friendship.

#VacationReading—the book I read (mostly on the plane)& the book I bought while in Key West! My husband and friends were nice enough to make the trek to both bookstores & I couldn‘t resist a signed book(& tote)! As for my November #BOTM pick, this found family fantasy made me feel nostalgic, would be great to read out loud to a younger reader & could‘ve used a map! I appreciated the thorough ending that tied up literally everything! Strong debut!

This one was so good I had to buy a paperback when I forgot my BOTM copy at work on Friday! I liked all of the characters and the ending was cool, but I do think the twist of Tao‘s vision (all I can say without spoiling) went a touch dark for a cozy fantasy.

Pub Day was 05 November

Tao travels the country in a mule-drawn wagon and tells fortunes. She is a teller of small fortunes, larger fortunes come with consequences and so she sticks to the small ones. On her journey she makes friends with a former mercenary and a reformed thief, who are looking for a lost child, as well as an apprentice baker and her slightly magical cat.

The story is like being on a low stakes ⬇️

julesG D&D campaign. Four heroes travelling together on the quest to find the small girl that was lost. On the way they are telling each other their stories, they talk about the small and big things in life (love, culture, roots,...) and try to be better every day.

I truly enjoyed this story and would recommend it to anyone who wants to escape into a low stakes cosy fantasy world where life is good when you're making tea, baking and ⬇️

Today is a really hard day. 💙

So I'm trying to find little glimmers of joy where I can. For example - my #botm box arrived today, filled with fantasy goodies!

I started using Litsy daily right after the 2016 election, because I was feeling scared and sad and needed a community. Despite how devastated I'm feeling today, I'm really glad that Litsy is here and that we all have each other! 💕📚

Aims42 Your books arriving is definitely a ray of happiness today 🙌 I love this community for all the reasons you mentioned 💙 2mo

A fairy tale atmosphere, a quest, friendship and magic with a large helping of creativity and humor make this a rollicking good time. It would make a good read alike to House on the Cerulean Sea. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for a digital copy. Due out early November.

A must read for fans of Legends & Lattes and The Spellshop, this cozy, inclusive fantasy follows a foreign-born fortuneteller who flees home only to find it on the open road with an aspiring baker, a reformed thief, and the father of a missing girl. Read for a heartwarming, heart-opening story, pleasantly paced like a donkey-drawn cart full of baked goods, found family, and all kinds of magic, rolling on toward adventure—and you‘re welcome aboard!
