Fury: A Novel | Salman Rushdie

Imaging the Commandments if they included omissions.

Really prescient that he listed Donald Trump. This book was written in 2001.

#authoramonth @Soubhiville

Cuilin 😳 1y
Ruthiella Before Donald Trump became a political figure and a reality television personality in the early part of this century, he was mostly known for his epic divorce from Ivana Trump for his then mistress Marla Maples in the 1980s. I suspect that is where Rushdie is pulling from in his listing him here, especially alongside Hefner. (edited) 1y
dabbe When I stayed at The Plaza in 1988 with my family (long story how we were ever able to stay there), he had just bought it. All of the workers we encountered there HATED him. He's been a grifter his whole life, but now he'll destroy America if he can't win because Drumpf is not a LOSER. #rantover #thanksforreading 1y

Luster: A Novel | Raven Leilani
post image

The one thing that is STILL getting me about this book is that the author talks about “THE Phil Collins song” and I can‘t remember which one it is! Obviously not Sussido, but is it Take a Look at Me Now or maybe Another Day for You and Me in Paradise, but honestly, I don‘t think it‘s any of those. Argh! Go back to the 80s Phil!! Get out of my head!

Megabooks And note to Raven. Phil was a very prolific artist in the 70s and 80s both with Genesis and as a solo artist. THERE IS NOT ONE SONG! There are A LOT of songs! Phew. I had to get this out. #rantover 4y
BarbaraBB Don‘t waste your time on Phil 🤣 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB it‘s the principle!! Lolololol!! Sometimes you‘ve just got to let it flow...🤣🤣🤣 4y

BarbaraBB It is ridiculous that he speaks of the song. If you give me a minute I come up with at least ten and I‘m not even a fan! 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB exactly!! That‘s my point! I think the author was born in the 90s, so that‘s, I guess, why she thinks Phil is a one hit wonder?!? 🤣 I don‘t even know, Barbara. Smh. 4y
BarbaraBB And now I am counting how many I can come up with... 😫 WHY?! 🤣 4y
TrishB I don‘t think I can read a book that mentions Phil Collins 😁😁 4y
Ruthiella I‘ve not read the book, but I‘m guessing THE PHIL COLLINS song has to be “In the Air Tonight “. It was his first hit big going solo. (edited) 4y
Kimberlone In the Air Tonight? That drum solo is absolutely iconic 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I know!! Argh! @TrishB there‘s an awkward karaoke scene with, @Ruthiella is right In the Air Tonight, where a wife is singing it to her husband in front of his lover, which is just unbelievably awkward. This book has so many awkward scenes!! And yes @Kimberlone the drum solo is definitely the best part!! 4y
8little_paws It's definitely in the air tonight. I get it-- that generation is likely only aware of PC from that song alone. 4y
Megabooks @8little_paws so weird, but then again there are newer artists that the kids know a lot of songs from and I know one from three years ago! So it goes both ways I guess. #ImOld 4y

Since about 3 this morning the people that live above us have been apparently moving furniture using a skateboard with square wheels!! They have been loud since we moved in but in the past week it‘s gotten so much worse. It‘s so frustrating to not be able to relax in my own bed because it‘s literally loud noises every 3 min! 😭😭😭😭#rantover #thanksforlistening

Deifio Oh, that's bad! No wonder you're annoyed! Did you already talk to them? Sometimes people don't realize they're super loud. I hope it's one of those cases 😘 4y

When God was a Woman | Merlin Stone

Oy. 🤦🏼‍♀️ By this chick‘s logic, I can‘t study or write about my specialty in the history field because it‘s mostly about men, and I‘m not a man. THANKS FOR BEING A GOOD FEMINIST SWEETHEART!!! 🤬🤬🤬 Real feminists don‘t make 🤬 comments like this, because they see how the flip side actually hurts women. 🤬 FFS, I know a brilliant historian that studies women in the military through history. It‘s fascinating. HIS papers are always eye opening.

GingerAntics If a man is interested in the female perspective and he wants to spend all his time reading about it and he decides to share what he‘s discovered with the world, MORE 👏🏻 POWER 👏🏻 TO 👏🏻 HIM!!! 👏🏻 FFS #rant #rantover #feminismshouldnthurtwomen #pleasestopattackingfemalehistorians #womenhistorians #womeninhistory 5y
Chrissyreadit It may also be a reflection of when this was written and how women in academia were treated. When I was little girls were not considered good at math or science, should be nurses not drs, etc. I really remember the difference of how some teachers were with boys compared to girls. 5y
TheBookHippie People are fun. 🙄🤬 5y

TheBookHippie My favourite “but you‘re a feminist and you‘re always cooking so how can that be ?!......” oye 5y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit 🤦🏼‍♀️ I don‘t get people who can‘t figure out the very simple concept that feminism just means believing (sometimes militantly when necessary) that men and women are both capable of the same things. Women cook, but men are chefs. WTF?! Ugh. (edited) 5y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie the book was written in a period when that was the case. Hell, I had teachers in the 90s that acted that way. Still, this review was written in 2013...and sadly this is an argument I hear all the time. By making some things just for females, you‘re keeping us separate, and separate is never equal. Sadly, I see this mentality A LOT with feminists my age. “We want x for ourselves.” (edited) 5y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit they just don‘t see how that‘s the exact thing feminism is against! Drives me nuts! 5y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics SAME. It makes me crazy. 5y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie though, from what I heard and read, almost as soon as feminism started, women who were happy as home makers and wanted to be home makers were excluded because the early feminists thought they were brain washed or supporting the patriarchy. Wasn‘t the whole point that women should be free to be and be whatever they want? I don‘t get why anyone thinks restricting males is the answer, ie any better. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
Birdsong28 🤯😵🤬📚📖 5y
Chrissyreadit I think part of this is that so many women experienced patriarchy in different ways, and it can have an effect. I think if we follow the anger we will find trauma. The bad side is people who demonize the term feminist. I love when people understand it means equality in general but even that term is taken out of context often. BTW- it was used against women in many ways- I would have loved to be home with my children instead of working full time. 5y
Chrissyreadit Reagonomics used women in the work force to create an economic system that further disenfranchised single mothers and glorified two working parents as a gift instead of decimating a healthy middle class. In terms of matriarchy I love that we had Native American societies that were matrilineal. 5y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Yup. It blows your mind. Equal people it means equal! 5y
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit gahhhhh Reganomics 🤢🤬 5y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit matriarchal and matrilineal are two different things. Many cultures around the world, before and since the rise of Rome, have been matrilineal (mostly in places the Romans didn‘t go). Matriarchy is just the patriarchy in reverse and that is a actually quite rare and always has been. Many cultures determine lineage through the mother or allow children to inherit from the mother (matrilineal). 5y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit Anderson Cooper actually rejected his matrilineal inheritance when his mother died (mostly because he never thought he was getting it because she‘d told him that, and he basically held her to her word I guess). America is matrilineal now and was when this book was written. 5y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie Reagan certainly demonised single mothers, along with some other folks. I‘m sorry, I don‘t trust a “Republican turned Democrat.” 5y

Come Juneteenth | Ann Rinaldi
post image
Panpan

This book is strange & made me very angry. It tries to grapple w/ the choice many white Texans made to not tell their slaves that they had been freed until 1865 (Juneteenth). In creating drama, Rinaldi centers the story on the premise “if only we told the slaves they were free” instead of “if only we didn‘t ascribe to this racist institution” and seemingly unintentionally absolves its white characters of any agency w/ in the story. #soproblematic

crhealey Not sure the character limit or my mental energy can truly capture how much of the Lost Cause ideology and glorification of Southern tradition is present in the book. Even the end, which attempts to demonstrate growth for the characters is inherently racist and problematic as well. 5y
crhealey And I like Ann Rinaldi‘s other works! I don‘t remember them all being this problematic! #rantover 5y
Chrissyreadit I think sometimes I need to know these books exist as proof that the crazy rascist way of thinking is alive, well and in many places still being taught. I have had people try to tell me it doesn‘t exist. One of the reasons I stopped Facebook. 5y

Let me be clear. I love this world. I love the characters. I love the story. BUT, I am quite annoyed by the amount of repetition. If I'm half way through the third book of the trilogy, I'd better understand how the metals work in the magic system. PLEASE stop explaining it! Also, I am quite aware that Vin wears a simple shirt and trousers. #rantover #neededtovent #cosmere #fantasy

Y‘all, I need to talk about one of my pet peeves with you: when people don‘t count audiobooks as “real books.” AHH. So I just listened to an unabridged audiobook, but somehow I don‘t count as having read that book?? There‘s a girl in my volunteer program who hints all the time that she doesn‘t consider my audiobook listening to be real reading, and it‘s driving me crazy. I understand if an individual‘s learning style doesn‘t work with audio ⬇️

Caterina But if I‘m an audio learner, who are you to judge? I find that audiobooks enhance my reading experience, since I am an audio learner. And what, do books our parents read to us as kids not count as real books? Do books that blind people read not count as real books? Do ebooks not count as real books? Where do we draw the line? 7y
Caterina People who are snobs about books kill me inside. We all have personal preferences, thank goodness we can‘t inflict them on others! 7y

Redwritinghood I say - who cares what she thinks? I do some of my reading by audiobook too and it‘s definitely reading. 7y
Caterina @Redwritinghood True, true. This girl is cruel to people‘s faces and gossips behind people‘s backs, so I extra shouldn‘t pay any mind, but for some reason it‘s really getting to me today. 7y
quirkyreader It is real reading. I have a visual impairment and sometimes I can't read print. Audio books are a life saver. 7y
janeycanuck Ugh, this woman is ridiculous. First, the content of the book is still going into your brain. Second, with an audio, you hear EVERY word whereas reading in print makes it very easy to skim or skip - in which case, isn‘t that the cheater‘s option? Third, who gives a flying rat‘s ass about how someone else consumes their books? Why is it any of her business and if she thinks audios aren‘t real reading, she‘d better not shop online, eat... 7y
janeycanuck In restaurants, etc because that‘s not “really” shopping if you get it delivered or not “really” eating if you don‘t make it yourself. Tell her to turn her nosey judgment inward and work on her own crappy attitude instead of giving other people a hard time. 7y
OrangeMooseReads It‘s real reading. Audiobooks were made for those with visual impairments. This girl can shove her opinion where the sun don‘t shine. 7y
HardcoverHearts I have author friends who assure me that they do not make this distinction. All they care about is that people engage with their stories and ideas. That‘s it. How you do it is up to you. Shine her on. Don‘t let her steal your joy. 7y
thelizflynn Listening to an audiobook is definitely “real” reading! I believe listening to a story activates the same parts of your brain that reading a story does, so there! You still get the same, if not more, out of a book when you listen to it on audio! 7y
xicanti What an unpleasant, judgey person. 😡 Seriously, does she think blind people who only read audiobooks are all cheaters, too? Or dyslexic folks who find it easier to concentrate on audio? 7y
sprainedbrain You don‘t need that kind of negativity in your life! Audiobooks are books, and listening to them is reading. ❤️ 7y
Redjewel_7734 Sounds like a person that needs to be kicked to the curb. Audio def counts as reading! 7y
