Clare-Dragonfly I was thinking of I Love Lucy too! 😂 7mo
TheAromaofBooks So was Rebecca's intent to GOAD Maxim into murdering her ON PURPOSE??? Also, side note, I'm just not sure what I would do if my husband confessed to killing his first wife, no matter how terrible she was. I'm not confident I would be as “obviously I love you and will stay with you“ as our narrator is! 😂 7mo
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks I would have trouble with that too! 7mo
kwmg40 The doctor offered them cigarettes and sherry! What doctor would do that these days? It was a different time! 7mo
Bookwormjillk @TheAromaofBooks yeah, I don‘t think that would have the same effect on me as it had on Jan. 7mo
peanutnine @TheAromaofBooks yeah it seemed like Rebecca's way of taking him down with her, not realizing he would get away with it 7mo
peanutnine The narrator is so desperate to be loved that she'll overlook some HUGE red flags. She's so worried about what others think of her, she can't imagine leaving him even for a good reason 7mo
IndoorDame Totally agree about both of them! If Rebecca wants to off herself, go for it, but suicide by proxy totally makes her an #evilbitch And Jan staying with her husband who‘s perfect except for the whole I‘m a murderer thing is just nuts, like I‘m worried the girl has no basic self preservational instincts! 7mo
5feet.of.fury I was so surprised by the doctor‘s report. What the heck? But, it gives everyone a good reason to believe the suicide… 7mo
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks Yes to everything you said! Rebecca is evil and Jan is not a great decision-maker. 😂 7mo
Roary47 Big reveals! 7mo
ElizaMarie Wow. So… Suicide by proxy!? Makes sense. Rebecca seems like a “if I am not happy nobody can be happy” type of person. #Vile 7mo

currentlyreadinginCO I was struggling & used the study guides to go back and understand the characters and first two books better, and I feel like I finally understand what's going on! & this ch was comprehensible. I cheated a bit bc I saw some of what happens in future chapters, but I don't really mind that and found it helpful. I dunno if I would have the time and patience to look back at guides if I wasn't reading one ch per day with you all so I'm glad I'm here 😂 10mo
5feet.of.fury @currentlyreadinginCO I agree, this is the 1st chapter that I found to be “readable”. 10mo
Bklover @currentlyreadinginCO I went and did the same thing with LitCharts. I love that there are chapter summaries with analysis right next to it. Makes it a little easier to understand! 10mo
Cuilin @Bklover my favorite go to summary is Lit charts for this reason too. 🤩 10mo

BarkingMadRead @TheBookHippie I was looking for 1950s cards and couldn‘t resist 🤣 12mo
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead it‘s fantastic!!! 12mo
tpixie Live this photo!!! ♥️🎁♥️🎁♥️ 12mo
rwmg Meat rationing only ended in 1954, hence Wilmet's focus on it during her lunch with Harry. 12mo
Cuilin Oh my gosh that surprise gift and quote too. Wilmet will need to avail of the confessional at this rate. “Did you speak in Portuguese?” Sybil knows what‘s up!! 12mo
BarkingMadRead @Cuilin nothing gets past Sybil! @rwmg I wondered about that, I thought that might be why (edited) 12mo
kspenmoll Such color! Festive photo! I‘m trying not to read comments because my books still has not arrived. 12mo
julieclair @Cuilin But… the hottie priest will probably be in the confessional! 😂 And… I totally agree about Sybil… she‘s pretty savvy. 12mo
Bookwormjillk Nothing gets past Sybil 12mo
Ruthiella @rwmg That is one aspect that I love about Pym‘s books: the time capsule look at postwar London and particularly the details about food. 12mo

5feet.of.fury @Ruthiella Goth Ally Sheedy 🖤 13mo
Cuilin @dabbe exactly and I love it!! 13mo
julieclair @cuilin @dabbe Yes! But I think Cranford had more gossip. 🤫 13mo
rwmg I don't think I like Wilmet very much. 13mo
BarkingMadRead @rwmg I‘m not a huge fan either 13mo
Bklover @Ruthiella Goth Ally Sheedy! Or any Ally Sheedy!🖤 13mo

Ch 35-36: two chapter of Angel being a dumbass 🤷🏻‍♀️ #isaidwhatisaid #andnowheislettingherleave #noooooooo #sodepressing #pemberlittens #hashtagbrigade

Bookwormjillk She TRIED to tell him. 13mo
Librarybelle Yeah, this is why I‘m not really a fan of Angel. Poor Tess! 13mo

BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk seriously!!! Such.a.jerk. 13mo
TheBookHippie Boys are stupid 🤦🏻‍♀️ 13mo
Bluebird 😡😡😡😡 13mo
Ruthiella Totally. 😡😡😡 13mo
dabbe Angel is a sanctimonious asshole. Why the hell did Hardy name him Angel? And to think that a woman being raped is WORSE than a man debauching himself during this time period is almost impossible to grasp. These people and their so-called dignity make me want to 🤮. Tess deserves so much better. 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly Dumbass is putting it extremely mildly! I am absolutely furious with Angel. He acknowledges that she tried to tell him and he wouldn‘t let her, and yet acts like she‘s some deceptive snake?! I am absolutely furious with and disgusted by him. And I hate the bit about the “core of logic”… there is NOTHING logical about his changed feelings toward her. I don‘t know if I want to read the book more quickly in hopes that he learns his lesson or give up 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬😱 13mo
Daisey Listening to these chapters on my way to school this morning was a bad idea because I went into my classroom mad. Only after school from now on. It‘s all so frustrating, but it‘s so much more infuriating after his own confession. 13mo
Cuilin Disgusted but not surprised. If he changes his mind not sure he could be forgiven. 13mo
currentlyreadinginCO These chapters were so hard and Angel is the worst! I felt the pain in Tess's statements & experienced so many emotions ... so far I love Hardy's writing and hate the plot that he wrote! My 16 yo self should've been done w men after I read this... 13mo
julieclair Angel. So very disappointing. I was expecting so much better of him. Poor Tess… 13mo

Bklover I‘m with @Bookwormjillk 😂 1y
Ruthiella Ooh, people like Miss Lavish still exist today! Pooh poohing guidebooks and claiming access to the “real” country. Also , thinking democracy means “civility to your inferiors”. 🙄 1y
Bklover Yep, they‘re still here @Ruthiella 😊🙄 1y
dabbe Our heroine is ready for an Italian adventure! If anyone's seen the 1985 movie, Julian Sands played George. His body was found last week on Mt. Baldy. #ripjulian 💙 1y
Morr_Books I was so excited for this chapter as Santa Croce is one of the places I always highly recommend visiting in Florence - second only to the Uffizi 1y
Morr_Books I am fascinated by the interactions between the characters so far. 1y
BarkingMadRead @dabbe awwwww I‘d heard about that, so sad! 1y
Bookwormjillk @dabbe oh wow I heard about that but didn‘t make the connection 1y
julieclair I will take the heathens over Miss Lavish any day! 1y
TheBookHippie I do so love a good heathen ….. @dabbe I saw that and he‘s been missing so long I‘m glad they found a body! 1y

Morr_Books I like Peter, but I feel like I can't let myself get attached to any male characters, so I am cautiously hopeful he is alive. 2y
dabbe I'm getting to the point in the story now where I want to know more about the narrator! Alas (using some genteel language here), it seems she will only be destined to be the #cranfordchronicler and nothing else. I'm also coming to care quite a bit about Miss Matty. 2y
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books I know! Being a dude in this book is not healthy! 2y
Ruthiella Poor Miss Mattie. To lose her brother, then her parents. 😢 2y
Clare-Dragonfly I suspect Peter will return in the next chapter to profess his love for a woman he was attached to in his youth, and then die. 2y
Bookwormjillk This is wrong but I laughed when he threw the pillow baby. 2y
Clare-Dragonfly I wonder how Matty knows what kissing sounds like. 🤔 2y
Bookwormjillk @Clare-Dragonfly ohhhhhhhhhh 2y
Ruthiella @Clare-Dragonfly Good point! 😳 2y
willaful @Bookwoemjillk I think Donald Westlake borrowed the poor pillow baby for one of his books, Castle in the Air IIRC.

@Clare-Dragonfly 😂😂😂

And I gotta hand it to Miss Matty, she put a lot more effort into getting pronouns right than many people do today. 😁
2y
Clare-Dragonfly @willaful Yes, I appreciated her pronoun use! 😆 2y

Chapter 3: the kids are a hot mess and behave like heathens, which is obviously Agnes‘ fault! #whosschoolingwho #agnesissonotincharge #thesekidsneedaspanking #isaidwhatisaid #christmasbreak #pooragnes #pemberlittens

TheBookHippie Little heathens ............lololololol 2y
IndoorDame The kids are so evil! 😈 2y
See All 13 Comments
Ruthiella Poor Agnes. They really are awful children. Though Agnes also often thinks a good whipping might set them straight, which isn‘t in keeping with how many modern parents raise their children. 2y
AnnR It seems the son gets his temper and bullying ways by example from the father. I don't think “Patience, Firmness, and Perseverance“ is going to be enough to reign in these little terrors otherwise. What on earth do the parents expect Agnes (or any governess) to do, in order to get the spoiled brats to take their studies seriously. 2y
Bookwormjillk Poor Agnes 2y
eeclayton Here we are in 2023, and there are still many parents who let their kids do whatever they want, and then expect teachers in schools to teach them all the stuff they (the parents) have failed to. The difference is that teachers today are trained to deal with kids while Agnes has no idea what she's doing. 2y
Clare-Dragonfly At first I was going to say this reminds me of The Turn of the Screw, but I take it back. These kids are so much worse! 2y
mcctrish As a teacher I‘d say this parenting style is making a strong comeback in some areas and in some cases no training helps #assholesbegatassholes #therehastobeconsequences 2y
BarkingMadRead @eeclayton yesssssssss 2y
Morr_Books @Ann_Reads Agree! I highlighted those words and had the same thought. Also, this chapter brought back buried memories of my time as a nanny. 😨 2y
SamAnne I‘m not regretting my decision to skip kids…😂😂😂 2y
julieclair Poor Agnes! She is trying so hard. These kids are so awful. And especially when kids truly don‘t care what kind of punishment they get, how in the world do you motivate them to comply? 2y

Bookwormjillk RIP Raffles. It‘s murder for sure. 2y
ravenlee Absolutely murder. And worse, he set up somebody else to do it unknowingly. 2y
Clare-Dragonfly I always wonder in this chapter what a doctor would prescribe for these symptoms in the modern day. 2y
