#nonfiction2020 #womensrights this was a fascinating topic - that women‘s XX chromosomes give us a powerful survival advantage, that having 2 x‘s to choose from means we don‘t get as many x-linked disease/illness as men. Yet a lot of scientific research and studies have ignored women. The book itself didn‘t have as much substance as I‘d hoped, a lot of anecdotal and didn‘t hold my interest as much as I wanted it to, but I'm glad i read it.

Megabooks I remember this line of medicine from veterinary school. The book is correct in that there have been more studies on the disadvantages of the Y chromosome than the advantages of the X. 4y

#nonfiction2020 #education This was really inspiring and insightful, and authors voice is calm yet energizing at the same time. She includes her thoughts on fine arts (writing) MBA‘s - that they‘re not worth the $, you‘re better off just continuing to create, create, create, and finding your own peeps to inspire creating with.

jb72 I read that book some time ago and I really enjoyed it. It‘s such a good lesson. I like how she tells fear to get in the back seat. 4y
Megabooks @Meaw_catlady recommended this to me too! 4y

#nonfiction2020 #health Bill Bryson is a natural storyteller, so this was interesting and enjoyable . Author finds just the right balance of medical knowledge vs anecdotal highlights that keeps the book fresh all the way through.

jb72 I‘ve read one of his books and really enjoyed it. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great job, and yes his NF‘s are usually enjoyable. 4y

#nonfiction2020 #economics The author took on entry jobs at Amazon, Convergys, and McDonalds, and wrote about her experiences. It was shocking to learn how much 'micro-managing' down to every second of the workers day, and how dehumanizing the practices are. Felt relevant to read right now, as it's been so difficult for low-wage workers during covid, with companies not protecting their workers well enough!

Megabooks Agree!! Such a timely read during COVID! The techno-Taylorism, as she calls it, is the biggest difference between 80s-90s jobs and now and I think that really makes an understanding gap in even well meaning politicians. 4y
AnneFindsJoy @Megabooks yes for sure! The technology is used in a way that tips the scale of power way too far towards the employer. I really hope that the current crisis will somehow lead to meaningful change for entry-level work and earning a reasonable living wage! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa This is the second great review I‘ve seen for this one, I really need to read it... it sounds so informative. 4y
AnneFindsJoy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa yes! You really get the inside scoop, it‘s anecdotal vs. scientific... the author used to work for the Onion, so she‘s opinionated and humorous too. So it‘s engaging and illuminating without being preachy or dry. 4y
Cinfhen I really need to read this book/ thanks for the reminder and excellent review 😊 4y

The story of China‘s most radical experiment. #nonfiction2020 #othercountry A through look at the one child policy in China over a long timespan. it was really interesting to see the impact now and into the future, even after the policy ended. The author is an award winning journalist with more than a decade of reporting in Asia. I thought this was fascinating!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That sounds very fascinating! 4y
Megabooks I‘ve been meaning to watch the documentary on this on Amazon. 4y

#booked2020 #LiveandLearn This was a fascinating book about AI today and in the future. It focused on the need for philosophical discussion on how to keep AI beneficial. There‘s a great prologue with a fictionalized story showing just how AI could literally rule the world, and it seemed totally plausible! Both fascinating and terrifying at the same time! Some high level thinking here, but presented with the average reader in mind.

Cinfhen Very cool and very scary too! Nice choice 👍🏽 4y
alisiakae Fascinating choice!! So..I have a friend I met in a online class I took. When we were first partnered for a project, I received an email from his assistant (who went by a name, but can‘t remember what it was). Took me a few weeks to realize his assistant was AI! 🤣 4y

I loved the audio narration by Aoife McMahon, I don‘t think I would have been as engaged otherwise! #booked2020 #MillenialAuthor

#wintergames #merryReaders #winterReadsBingo #whitecover I‘m so happy to have finally listened to this book 1 in the Walt Longmire series - it‘s got great characters and humor that had me laughing out loud. Finally wrapped up #nonfiction2019 with tagged book as #somethingpersonal — My info was part of Equifax breach, and someone has tried using my SSN. But I didn‘t find this book very helpful though, I knew the basic stuff already, and the rest seemed overly complex. #nonfiction2019 #inspirational . A short book 102 pages, an extended Ted Talk. It‘s a reminder of the power of gratitude in improving mood , generosity, and connectedness. In this book the author thanks every single person involved in his morning cup of coffee. A reminder of how a simple item in your life connects you with others. #readingUSA2019 my tally for year to date... I haven‘t been choosing books specifically for this, but it‘s been fun to go back and see what books I read would fit! I had a lot of books with California setting/author!

Librarybelle Great job! I love the map and the use of colors to differentiate between setting and author! 5y
AnneFindsJoy @Librarybelle thanks! I was curious to track how many of each type, and thought it was funny that it worked out exactly 6 and 6 📚🤗 5y

#nonfiction2019 #survival The nomadic life can seem appealing but this book takes a hard look at the reality of a growing group of older adults in retirement years, who are living nomadically in vans/rvs and taking low paying seasonal type jobs to get by. No fixed address, no insurance.. and companies like Amazon taking advantage of them by hiring them into ‘slave labor‘ like job conditions in their warehouses. Insightful book - #reality

EmilyM I've been wondering if this is a book worth reading--I like nonfiction books about different ways of life. 5y
Samplergal I have this to read this week. 5y
Megabooks I started this, then I got really scared and put it down. 😱😱😱😱 You‘re doing great on the bingo too! 5y

jb72 There‘s a whole YouTube community that talks about this issue. Many retirees and disabled people live in their cars, vans and small campers to get by in life. 5y
AnneFindsJoy @Samplergal be prepared for some eye opening details! @EmilyM Not one I‘d call an ‘enjoyable‘ read, but illuminating for sure! (edited) 5y
AnneFindsJoy @Megabooks I agree some parts were quite scary to imagine. It gave me unease to imagine what if ... 5y
AnneFindsJoy @jb72 yeah I think people would be surprised by just how many are living this way. The author speaks of it being millions if I recall. They have to “fly under the radar” a lot , so there‘s not a good census of how many! (edited) 5y
jb72 @AnneFindsJoy I just downloaded it from the library. I‘d like to make time to read it. 5y

Small Fry | Lisa Brennan-Jobs
post image

#nonfiction2019 #anotherpointofview an alternate peek into the life of Steve Jobs, this time through his daughter Lisa Brennan-Jobs , who wrote this memoir of her early life. Lisa‘s mother and Steve Jobs had separated before she was born, and it took years for Steve to accept Lisa as his child - he finally did but in a very distant and limited way than you would expect from a parent. This is an unusual story and it‘s well written and thoughtful.

#LMPBC #round5 #groupQ I‘m thinking one of these... Thoughts? Any read already or feel strongly for or against? I tried to include a mix with contemporary, historical fiction, chicklit, and children‘s. I tagged books in the comments. @mrsmarch @Meaw_catlady @CindyRene

CindyRene I have not read any of these and all look interesting. No strong feeling against any. Looking forward to reading your pick! Thank you for asking 😊 5y
mrsmarch I‘m not sure I could read Angry Housewives...one of the character descriptions was a little too close to home. 😢 Sorry. The rest all sound interesting! 5y
mrsmarch @AnneFindsJoy @CindyRene @Meaw_catlady Do we want to have a theme for the reads or just share whichever most excites us? I like this collage approach too. 5y
AnneFindsJoy @mrsmarch @CindyRene @Meaw_catlady I‘m fine with theme or random picks... I had seen Littens posting choices and got #excited #newbie 😂 5y
mrsmarch @AnneFindsJoy I didn‘t stay up in bed last night thinking of books 😂 5y
Meaw_catlady Ooh those all sound interesting to me! Besides the angry housewives. 5y
mrsmarch On additional reflection, this sounds interesting 5y
AnneFindsJoy @mrsmarch @Meaw_catlady @cindyrene sure let‘s go with this one, and I will use turquoise/teal pen 5y

#nonfiction2019 #femaleauthor Celebrating my first Bingo in column I 🥳 This was an interesting exploration of shifts in parenting, and impacts on happiness. Yup, parenting is hard, damn hard! I laughed when the author wrote how children are now “economically useless, but emotionally priceless” to the family! LOL .... True d‘at!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Whoo Hoo! Good for you!! 5y
AnneFindsJoy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks! Loving this challenge, and you know I‘m going to keep going until I fill the board 🤩📚🙌 ❤️nonfiction ❤️ 5y

I learned so much with this deeply researched and detailed book on The Great Famine of the 1840s. There were a lot of factors that created the perfect storm for a natural disaster(potato blight) to turn into an epic tragedy with millions of deaths. The political ideology/decisions of the British governance over Ireland exacerbated the devastation and led to much human suffering. #nonfiction2019 #politics

TrishB That last sentence probably sums up hundreds of years of history in relation to UK/Ireland, sadly 😔 5y
AnneFindsJoy @TrishB yeah, so true, sadly 😥 5y

Pickpick

#nonfiction2019 #amovement A message from Dalai Lama, written in 2017 for the youth of today, rallying for a revolution of compassion as the way foreword in the world! Quick read (120pgs), hopeful. There‘s a charter of universal responsibility at the end of the book that is really inspirational , I wrote it out for my teens!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That sounds great, and perfect for the moment! 5y

Listened to this for #booked2019 #irishauthor This was a really solid debut, I enjoyed the characters, the plot, and the setting of Galway, Ireland. This mystery was engaging from start to finish, and I‘m excited for book two! Audio narrator had a nice Irish accent and did well portraying the many different characters.

Cinfhen I‘m just learning to appreciate audiobooks ~ a GOOD narrator is a game changer 5y

@Crazeedi #20kgiveaway This book is the one I most remember from my earliest reading! I would read it over and over and over! I had it memorized which country came next as I turned the page! I still have the book and it‘s falling apart but it‘s so special to me! Thanks for the trip down memory lane 📚❤️ and congrats on your Litsy milestone! ✨

Crazeedi How awesome that you still have this book! Thanks for sharing! 5y
