#doublespin is a #dnf. @TheAromaofBooks

Although I wanted to know what happened, I didn't like Eleanor's character, and wasn't keen on picking the book back up. I ended up reading the Wikipedia entry!

CaroPi I hear so much about this book but after 20 pages I just lost the interest ... 1w

November #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

#doublespin was the book club pick (tagged), so I've used the one I'm currently reading for it.

And I've decided on one of the shorter Hardy novels for #9 (Under the Greenwood Tree).

TBH, it could have been either, but I chose to read Uproar after getting interested in 18th century art(?) in this one - it was sort of a logical book to pick up after it.

I think some of the modern-day references to British pop culture might go over other countries' heads, but this was very illuminating.

Published next year, and written by one of my Uni friends who studied 18th century studies with me. She's just finalised her thesis for her PhD, and does A LOT with fashion throughout history and literature.

#10beforetheend @ChaoticMissAdventures

Started attending a new book club in my local library (tagged is our first book), and it depends on what book the librarian can get in as to what we'll be reading (although we've given her a list) as there's multiple book clubs in the council library system, so that's why #2 doesn't have a title!

ChaoticMissAdventures I read the English Patient this year! This is a great variety, thanks for joining and good luck! 1mo

BarbaraBB Curious about the tagged book! 1mo
jenniferw88 @BarbaraBB it's going to be a readalong over 2 weeks on Substack with Henry Eliot - the substack is Read the Classics with Henry Eliot. I'll post a more detailed blurb below. 1mo
jenniferw88 @BarbaraBB Mishima was born 100 years ago this year. This novel – his second – was the publication (in 1949) that made him a literary celebrity. Our narrator is the teenage Kochan, who loves his male classmate and masturbates over images of Saint Sebastian, but finds himself unable to reveal his true desires, hiding behind a mask of conformity. We will finish reading on the anniversary of Mishima‘s suicide by ritual seppuku. 1mo
BarbaraBB Thanks! I read some other books by him. I hope you‘ll enjoy this one. 1mo

Just attended a talk with Mike Gayle, David Suchet, Ann Cleeves, and Rachel Trethewey at Cheltenham Literature Festival, discussing whether Christie could be considered 'cosy'. It was generally agreed that her settings are cosy, but some of her murders aren't. Suchet & Cleeves were the best speakers.

Link to article regarding the talk:

jenniferw88 @BarbaraBB 😀 I'm slightly nervous about Tilt - it didn't appeal throughout the voting process, so we'll see! We should be on safer ground with the Cosby, as I like crime fiction, but I haven't read him before, so who knows? (Actually, the only author from this year's camp I've read before is Okorafor 🤣) 4mo
BarbaraBB I hadn‘t read her before and did read three of the others 😀. I‘ve been curious about Tilt as well. 4mo
jenniferw88 @BarbaraBB with my medical issues, pregnancy/motherhood is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY (& possibly too dangerous), so I think I probably won't identify with the MC. 4mo
BarbaraBB I get that. I am a mother but I am especially looking forward to how she reacts to the events happening as a person not as a mother. I often am annoyed by those typical motherly reactions and can‘t really identify with them either somehow. Like in this book which I hope bears no resemblance to Tilt but has a slightly similar topic. 4mo
