Aliens: Bishop | T.R. Napper
post image
Mehso-so

20/100 I always enjoy another adventure in the world of the xenomorphs, but this one seemed kind of pointless. Picking up after the Aliens 3 movie, Bishop's creator salvaged his body from the prison planet to gain access to the valuable information in his head about the xenomorphs. The Chinese, the Colonial Marines and the Weyland-Yutani corporation are also chasing the same data. Of course a bunch of aliens get loose and theres plenty ⬇️

RamsFan1963 of fighting with the Colonial Marines and the Chinese soldiers. I liked the rotating POVs of all the different factions, but too many characters were confusing when the fighting got hectic. I don't know how much his adds to the Aliens lore overall, but it kept my attention. 3 ⭐⭐⭐ 2d
MemoirsForMe Was Lance Henriksen one of the narrators? That would be so cool! I‘m a huge fan of the Alien movies but never found a decent novel. 23h
RamsFan1963 @MemoirsForMe Sadly, no Lance Henriksen. If you want a good Aliens book, there is an anthology called Aliens: Bug Hunt this I thought was pretty entertaining. If you ever wondered what happened to the slime bag Burke after Aliens, you'll want to read this. 9h
MemoirsForMe Oh yes, I‘d love to see the tables turn on that snake Burke. Thanks for the rec! 5h

19/100 Green Arrow has always been one of my favorite superheroes, much more interesting than Marvel's Hawkeye. Green Arrow's origin story was pretty much the same, but updated and streamline. Queen was still the reckless, alcoholic playboy, he still ended up on the desert island with the drug runners, it's just more gritty and violent than earlier versions of his origin. 3.75/5

18/100 I'm not sure what possesses me to read this, it's not my usual kind of material. Graphically violent and bloody, it's the story of the men of the Rath family. From father to son, they passed down their legacy of violence and death, until there were none left. I've seen Ron Garney's art on Captain American & Thor, but this was much grittier, verging on Frank Miller's style on Sin City. 3 ⭐⭐⭐💫

#notbookrelated Yesterday was the Superbowl, so it's time to think about the 2025-2026 season. The Jets have released Aaron Rodgers. Where do you think he'll end up next? Vikings (following the path of Farve)? Cowboys? Steelers? Raiders? Titans? Browns? It will be one of the big off-season stories, just how he likes it. @KadaGul @Lesliereadsalot @AmyG @MemoirsForMe

MemoirsForMe Not a fan, so I hope he retires. 2w
Lesliereadsalot I think he‘ll want to show the world it was the Jets not him, so he‘ll go somewhere else. Really not sure where. Maybe he‘ll be a back up haha! 2w

KadaGul How about Retiring like other Players 🙄🙄. Now, he is just bad luck. The Jets weren't in any better position with/ him. I think Robert Saleh had something going, especially in defense. 2w
AmyG If only he had the self awareness to know to know that it‘s time to retire. 1w
RamsFan1963 @BooksandCoffee4Me @KadaGul @Lesliereadsalot @AmyG @MemoirsForMe My fear is, with contract talks stalling with Stafford, plus his anger at Kupp being traded, the Rams will lose their QB to free agency. I trust McVay & Snead not to fall into the trap of picking up Rodgers, but with our QB unstable, anything is possible 🤢🤢🤢👎👎 1w
RamsFan1963 @AmyG @Read4life Luckily, Denver has their franchise QB with Bo Nix and I doubt Herbert is going to leave the Chargers starting position. Dallas does have Dax, who they paid a 💩 ton to keep, but the other teams I mentioned are in need of a QB, even one as difficult as Rodgers. 1w
Bette Well, I hope NOT the Vikings. Brady left with some class…well the first time. 🤭 1w
MemoirsForMe @RamsFan1963 @Lesliereadsalot He would never be a backup for his bitter rival, the Bears…so we‘re safe! 😁 1w
BooksandCoffee4Me @RamsFan1963 I‘d go for Russell Wilson before Rodgers, if it came to that. At least Wilson is a person with integrity. 1w
Lesliereadsalot I personally think it‘s better to take a flyer on a young quarterback, even late round, instead of hiring one of these aging stars to be the starter. Look at Joe Montana and Tom Brady. 1w
AmyG Rodgers isn‘t a francise quarterback. He is a band aid and a hope for 1 season. I hope nobody takes him. 1w
RamsFan1963 @AmyG From what I've read online, Tom Brady is campaigning to get Rodgers into Raiders' black & silver, then use their high draft position to draft a rookie QB. Spending a year on the bench behind Rodgers would not be the worst option for a rookie, very few of them come out with seasons like C.J. Stroud & Jayden Daniels had their rookie year. 1w
AmyG @RamsFan1963 That makes sense….all depending if it works out between the two. 1w
Jess861 Time to retire! 6d
The_Penniless_Author I'm guessing he retires to either become Pat McAfee's full-time guest or RFK Jr's Senior Advisor at HHS. If he ends up on the Steelers, I will throw myself into the Monongahela. 3d
RamsFan1963 @The_Penniless_Author I can see him as RFK's senior advisor, since they share an anti-vaxx attitude, which RFK lied about during his confirmation hearings. 2d

17/100 Until now, I've only read one book by Lem, Tales of Pirx The Pilot, and it was kind of mundane. He made being a spaceship pilot as exciting as driving a bus. Anyway, that did not prepare for this book, which is very funny. Trurl and Klapaucius are constructors, who get into many misadventures because their machines often have very unexpected consequences. The format is like short stories, but they build on each other, into absurd ⬇️⬇️

RamsFan1963 comical, and many times, surreal outcomes. I laughed at the names because Lem does enjoy his clever word play on character names and places. However, I do recommend having a dictionary if you want to read this, because Lem has quite the extensive vocabulary. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 #Read2025 2w

15/100 I guess I've watched too many westerns, because I found this kind of dry. The Dalton Gang was one of the last big outlaw gangs before the beginning of the 20th century, and their exploits are well know and often overly fictionalized. I don't know why, but I found the lawmen more interesting than the outlaws. 3 ⭐⭐⭐

The story follows each as the two characters change, through various DC storylines like the Death of Robin (Jason Todd), the Death of Superman at Doomsday's hands, and the breaking of Batman by Bane. Well told and heart-felt, with great art by Dave Taylor & Robert Campanella. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Pickpick

13/100 Judge Dredd is always a fascinating character. A total fascist in his pursuit of justice, which isn't always the same as the Law. These are three stories of Dredd's first year as a street Judge, but he's already cold, stoic, and stone-faced, dogged and unstoppable in his hunt for the guilty. I liked the first two stories, but the third one, by Al Ewing, was more about Dredd's corrupt brother Rico, so I found it less interesting. ⬇️

RamsFan1963 The narrator gave Dredd the kind of voice I expected, a cross between Clint Eastwood and Christian Bale's Batman. Very effective, but I bet it was murder on the narrator's throat. 3 ⭐⭐⭐💫 #Read2025 #SeriesLove2025 3w

11/100 A different take on traditional murder stories, more the how and why than the who, since it's often the murderer themselves who are narrating the story. Hello everyone!! I hope you're doing well in the first month of 2025, not too snowed in like we are in West Virginia. Of course, bad weather is just another good reason to stay inside and enjoy a good book. I hope everyone was able to find a copy of The Martian Chronicles, and has enjoyed reading it. Just to remind everyone, February's selection for #ClassicLSFBC is The Zero Stone by Andre Norton. Good luck and good reading.

CatLass007 My library hold finally came through but I haven‘t started it yet. Not to be nosy, but where are you in West Virginia? I‘m originally from Beckley and still have family in Pineville, Mabscott, and Charleston. When I was growing up we rarely got snowed in, no matter how much it snowed, because in West Virginia snow was always expected and cities and towns always had plenty of snow fighting equipment, materials, and personnel. CatLass007 February. People here still don‘t know how to prepare for snow. People either panic if they even think about snow or they refuse to even acknowledge the need to drive more cautiously whether there‘s normal summer rain or a true blizzard. There are people who just don‘t adjust their speed because of precipitation. I‘m not uncomfortable driving in the snow but it‘s taking your life in your hands to go out and be around the nuts who live here. 1mo

RamsFan1963 @CatLass007 OMG!! I had totally forgotten about Mr. K's in Johnson City. Wow!! That brings back so many fond memories 😁 1mo
CatLass007 I don‘t know when you were last in the area. Mr. K‘s is now in a two-story building at the top of a steep but not very tall hill on Mark Twain Court. It was jam packed when it was in a one story building just off North Roan Street. Its current location is not far from its previous location. It‘s no longer even a new location because I remember telling someone who was new in town in 2010 about the store. 1mo

07/100 I'm happy to say Book Three of the Prof. Croft series was just as enjoyable as the previous two. With each book, he reminds me less of John Constantine and more of his own character. It's all a trap, of course, and he soon finds himself in the middle of a four way battle between werewolves, vampires, the fae, ⬇️

05/100 Dan Jones never fails to entertain and educate. If you want to understand English History this is the author to read. Like Mary Beard with Roman History, Jones work is full of details, from major events like the Battle of Agincourt to seemingly minor things that had a big impact of Henry before he became King. Henry V was a complex man, full of contradictions, he was pious and religious, but he was also cruel, easily angered, and vengeful.

RamsFan1963 I think what raises this above the average biography of Henry V, is the time Jones spends on him when he's still the Prince of Wales. We see how events in Wales, and Scotland, shaped Henry's personality, how Richard II and Henry V reigns played a big part in how Henry V chose to rule his kingdom. 5 🌟 read 1mo

Sadly my interest burnt out after the first season, which is why it's taken me so long to get around to reading it. All in all it's pretty average, middle of the road Trek. Has anyone had trouble with Storygraph tonight? I was in the middle of looking at my 2024 Wrap-Up, when it suddenly blinked out and said Bad Gateway. Since then, I haven't been able to get the site to open. I guess everyone came to the site at the same time to look at their 2024 stats and cause the site to crash. I'll check it again in the morning.

bthegood I was on recently, it seems to be working🙂 2mo
Jess861 I've been having intermittent issues last night and this morning. Probably something with the site itself. 2mo
RamsFan1963 @Jess861 I'm glad to see it up and running today. I guess so many people were checking their 2024 stats, and setting up their challenges for 2025, that it caused a momentary crash. 2mo

lauraisntwilder It's not opening for me now, but it worked this morning. I think you're right -- searching all those year end stats crashed it. 2mo

The voting is done, and here are the winners. The Martian Chronicles will be January's #ClassicLSFBC selection, and The Zero Stone will be the pick for February. The Martian Chronicles should be available at just about any public library, and I've seen The Zero Stone available on Ebay for as low as $5 dollars. Good luck & Happy New Year!!

The sequel to Cascade Failure was my favorite book of July. The crew of the Ambit is forced to work with their worst enemy to save the life of one of their family members.

118/150 My last non-fiction book for 2024. Informative and enlightening, I'm embarrassed how little I know about African history, especially more recent 20th century events. I'm not usually a fan of authors reading their own books, but Faloyin has a pleasant voice. 3 ⭐⭐⭐💫

I was so busy yesterday that I didn't do my book for May, so I'll play catch up now.
May - The Demon of Unrest. Any new book by Erik Larson is a reason to rejoice. I don't think this is his best, but it's still very good, very educational and enlightening.
June - Red Side Story. Not only is this my favorite book for the month, it just might be my favorite book of the year.

I read two amazing books in April, the tagged book and Way Station by Clifford Simak. Either could have been the best of the month, but Rabbits was such a mindf**k that its stuck with me more, months after reading it.

I had three 5 🌟 reads for March, but by far, the best one was Cascade Failure. I loved everything about it, the found family aspect, the word building, the action and the snarky humor. I highly recommend it, even to those people who claim they're not really fans of science fiction.

Doomsday Book | Connie Willis

Pickpick

117/150 It took me awhile to get into this book, I thought it dragged terribly in the beginning, but once Kiven was able to talk and interact with the people in the past, the story got much more interesting. Usually with dual storyline books, I find one part more interesting than the other, but Willis kept both the past and present stories gripping, so I didn't mind when it flipped from one to the other. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

Andrew65 Well done 🎄🎄🎄 I read this many years ago and remember enjoying it. Like you I also remember it taking a long time to get going. 2mo

I didn't have a five star read for February, but this one was my favorite of the month. People today don't realize what a radical shift this country went through, changing from Hoover to FDR, and its lasting ramifications that are still affecting us today.

Making It So: A Memoir | Patrick Stewart

I only had one 5 🌟 read for January, and that was Patrick Stewart's excellent memoir. Although I did discover some disappointing things about his personal life, a bit of a womanizer and a cheater, I still admire his talent and his ability to overcome such a hard upbringing.

116/150 When books have co-authors, I'm always curious who contributes what. Lee Goldberg, co-author of the first 5 books in the Fox & O'Hare series, must have been in charge of snappy dialogue, clever innuendo, and sexual tension. This book, written without Goldberg, is missing all of these things. What happened to Nick & Kate's relationship? They've been on five assignments together, he's saved her life, she's saved his life, and they've ⬇️

RamsFan1963 been very intimate together, but now it's like we're back to book 1 again. Kate is the uptight FBI agent who treats Nick like a criminal who can't be trusted. I also didn't like the change in format. The previous 5 books were set up as heist/scam/stings set up to capture criminals that the regular FBI couldn't touch. Here its just straight forward kidnapping case, no intricate plot, no disguises, no scam that required split second timing. 2mo
RamsFan1963 It was pretty much a bummer. I have the last book in the series, The Bounty, that I originally planned to read next, but this was so bad I think I'll wait to finish in 2025. 2 ⭐⭐ 2mo
Mollyanna This is disappointing to hear. I‘ve read the first four and love the Nick/Kate relationship and the cons (especially when Willie is part of the plan 😂). I may hold off on book 5 for a bit to savor it. 2mo

115/150 The final volume of the current Bounty Hunters series. Too bad it ties into the silly (IMO) Dark Droids storyline, but it's a fitting end to Valance's storyline. Everyone get their HEA, and the story is left open for further adventures with the Bounty Hunters. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hi Everyone!! I'm trying to be better with my mid-month check-in for #ClassicLSFBC. I hope everyone was able to find a copy of Doomsday Book by Connie Willis, either in print, ebook or audiobook. Now is the time to make nominations for January's #ClassicLSFBC selection. As usually, the book with the most votes will be January pick and the runner up will be for February. With it being a new year, with a new presidential administration, ⬇️

Ruthiella Looking forward to another year of classic sci-fi! 👍I don‘t have any nominations, however. I‘ll vote from everyone else‘s picks. 2mo

TheSpineView Would love to reread 2mo
CatLass007 I loved The Ship Who Sang. I‘m almost certain that I still have my copy. But it‘s packed away in a box in my storage building behind my house. But I‘d love to read something else by Anne McCaffrey. The Pern series is fabulous but she wrote other series I‘ve never read, so I‘ll nominate Freedom‘s Landing. Whatever the group chooses, I‘m inspired to read a lot more of her work in 2025 than I had thought of. 2mo
swynn Yay for more classic SF! I hope to participate more regularly in 2025. I've been thinking about a reread of Alfred Bester's The Demolished Man, so I'll nominate that. 2mo
Larkken Yay! I‘m enjoying Connie Willis more than I thought I would! What is our cutoff for classic, again? 2mo
RamsFan1963 @Larkken We never really established a cutoff date, but I've always thought we shouldn't be using anything after 1990. Snow Crash was published in 1992, that has been our most recent selection so far. 2mo
Larkken Excellent! I like it. I loved Mccaffrey when little, which reminds me I also loved Andre Norton. I'd be curious how this holds up too 2mo
