Truth & Beauty
Truth & Beauty | Ann Patchett
What happens when the person who is your family is someone you aren't bound to by blood? What happens when the person you promise to love and to honor for the rest of your life is not your lover, but your best friend? In Truth & Beauty, her frank and startlingly intimate first work of nonfiction, Ann Patchett shines a fresh, revealing light on the world of women's friendships and shows us what it means to stand together.Ann Patchett and Lucy Grealy met in college in 1981, and, after enrolling in the Iowa Writers' Workshop, began a friendship that would be as defining to both of their lives as their work was. In her critically acclaimed and hugely successful memoir, Autobiography of a Face, Lucy Grealy wrote about losing part of her jaw to childhood cancer, the years of chemotherapy and radiation, and then the endless reconstructive surgeries. In Truth & Beauty, the story isn't Lucy's life or Ann's life, but the parts of their lives they shared. This is a portrait of unwavering commitment that spans twenty years, from the long, cold winters of the Midwest, to surgical wards, to book parties in New York. Through love, fame, drugs, and despair, this book shows us what it means to be part of two lives that are intertwined. This is a tender, brutal book about loving a person we cannot save. It is about loyalty, and about being lifted up by the sheer effervescence of someone who knew how to live life to the fullest.

What a lovely, heartbreaking book about a very special friendship. I‘m a fan of whatever Patchett writes and this was no exception. As with Happy Marriage, she reads the audio beautifully.

Scochrane26 I read the Magician‘s Assistant several yrs ago& didn‘t really like it. I meant to read another of her books, thinking I might like a different one. Now, I‘m reading Dutch House for book club & like it a lot. 5h
Crazeedi I read this several years ago, very good 5h

This book follows the #trueblue friendship between Patchett and her friend Lucy who lost part of her jaw from early childhood cancer. After taking pain killers following reconstruction surgery as an adult, Lucy developed a drug addiction that ultimately led to her death. An amazing & heartbreaking 💙

I have mixed feelings about this book. I‘m an Ann Patchett fan, and the writing here was excellent as usual. But there was something a little cold, a little removed, in this book about a friendship. Lucy seemed like, frankly, a drag, and there wasn‘t a lot of introspection from Ann. But I found it to be a quick and interesting read.

CoffeeK8 If you want a deeper insight into their friendship, you could read Lucy‘s book. I read it before patchet‘s and really loved it! (edited) 10mo
thebluestocking @CoffeeK8 it‘s definitely in my list! Does Ann make an appearance in it? 10mo
CoffeeK8 @thebluestocking yes! But it‘s also more about her childhood 10mo

I don't know how I feel about this one... Ann Patchett writes well, but I struggle with getting into it. Maybe it's knowing how it ends or something, but I'm just sort of meeh to the whole thing. (Which makes me feel like a horrible person🙈)

RebelReader This wasn‘t a favorite of mine either even though I usually like her work. 1y

Immediately thought of Ann Patchett‘s book detailing her twenty year friendship with Lucy Grealy, who lost part of her jaw to childhood cancer. This book, a library find in the new fiction section (2004),made a deep impression on me. It was my first encounter with this author. 💕📚

I love Ann Patchett and her writing voice and this memoir was no exception. This is a beautiful (if sometimes graphic and heart-wrenching) retelling of Patchett's 20-year friendship with the poet Lucy Grealy. As an aspiring writer, my favorite part was following along with the career trajectories of both of these literary women. A great memoir.

EKonrad Have you read Lucy Grealy‘s “Autobiography of a Face”? It is such a good companion piece to Patchett‘s book! 2y

I adore Patchett 's books, and was fortunate enough to hear her speak at Bath Literature Festival last year. She comes across as very down to earth and is inspirational in this.
This book details her friendship with another writer, dating back to their college days.

I was finding the audio a little too slow,so I switched to my eReader to finish the last section. A fascinating story of the friendship between Ann Patchett and Lucy Grealy. I will have to read Lucy's book as well soon. 🤓

This is the book that got Ann Patchett into trouble at Clemson. Protesters said, "The explicit message that this sends to students is that they are encouraged to find themselves sexually.” ...sounds great to me.? Moving it up the TBR. ? #bannedbooks

I love memoirs and this one was particularly relateable to me because my own face is noticeably asymmetrical due to medical issues. I hadn't heard of Lucy Grealy before, and now I definitely want to read her memoir. Only complaint I have is that Ann's a bit repetitive in regards to Lucy's neediness.

Sue You might enjoy my ex-husband's memoir. 4y
