Agatha: The Real Life of Agatha Christie
Agatha: The Real Life of Agatha Christie | Anne Martinetti
47 posts | 47 read | 138 to read
The life of Agatha Christie was as mysterious and eventful as her fiction. This beautifully illustrated graphic novel traces the life of the Queen of Whodunnit from her childhood in Torquay, England, through a career filled with success, mischief, and adventure, to her later years as Dame Agatha. Revealing a side to Christie that will surprise and delight many readers, "Agatha "introduces us to a free-spirited and thoroughly modern woman who, among other things, enjoyed flying, travel, and surfing. Centering around an episode in 1926 when Christie staged her own disappearance, "Agatha "is an intriguing, entertaining, and funny exploration of the 20th century s best-loved crime novelist."

This was a perfect pick for me! Enjoyed reading it so much. Covers Agatha‘s life from childhood until old age, including the period of her mysterious disappearance. She converses with Poirot once he is created- these parts of the book add welcome humor to her story. So well done! Illustrations ++. Highly recommend.

Bookwormjillk Glad you liked it! I enjoyed it as well. I thought it was clever the way her characters visited her. 3y

This was a fun, interesting, and quick read. It was my 2nd pick for #bookspin #doublespin. It starts off with her 11-day disappearance in 1926, after her mother's death and her husband asking for a divorce. It covers her travels and career, mentions her time as a nurse ( I didn't know this) and several of her novels. Her imaginary conversations with Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple were fun. An enjoyable read for all fans.

BookishMe Yes, yes! I especially enjoyed looking through the bibliography at the end and trying to match titles with the events recounted in the retelling. ☺️☺️ 4y

Opening with the most famous incident from her life, her disappearance, this graphic novel bio proceeds in vignettes from childhood to her passing. Although I wished they had spent more time on certain episodes of her life, or that it had been longer, I learned quite a bit. And I was amused by her banter with Poirot when he popped in unannounced & his jealousy of her other characters, especially Miss Marple.

This is a nice graphic novel style biography of the Queen of Mystery: Agatha Christie. There‘s not a lot of depth to it, but it touches on important themes in her life and her beloved characters. The book is probably best for young readers or casual Christie fans. I am neither. It annoyed that the love detectives and Parker Pyne weren‘t mentioned. Also the book suggests that the Beresfords didn‘t age alongside the author (they did!). Still good!

vivastory Great review 👍I'm going to read this tomorrow. 4y

#NFNov I don‘t think I‘ll manage to fill the card before December, but I‘m trying! My next readathon read is another non fiction about haunted buildings but I‘m not sure which prompt to use. Should it be female author? Or would it be classed as hobby related?🤔

My 1st finished book for the #24B4Monday #readathon with 2 books half done. I‘m all over the place this weekend, I just can‘t settle on one thing so I‘m trying some non fiction books. This was a graphic novel of Dame Agathas life with a fictionalised version of her disappearance after her mother‘s death & her husbands infidelity. I enjoyed it very much. #NFNov #TIL-her 2nd husband was 14yrs younger than her & incited her love for archeology.

#BookMail Pt2 A new addition to my Dame Agatha collection, this is a graphic non fiction about Dame Christie‘s life, starting with her famous disappearance in December 1926.She was found 10 days later, staying at a hotel in Harrogate under an assumed name. She never gave a reason for it,so it‘s remained a mystery for over 90yrs. Dame Agatha was a woman ahead of her time, she travelled, surfed, flew & attended archeological digs. An interesting life.

I very much enjoyed this graphic novel biography of Agatha Christie. It‘s not a straight narrative but instead a variety of snapshots. Which is actually a great way to span all the high (and low) points in her long life. Some of her characters show up too!
The art is fantastic. Thumbs up!

I loved the artwork, but the narrative was a bit choppy and disjointed. I didn‘t realize this was originally written in French, and I wonder if the translation is part of the problem. Slightly longer review on my blog... https://wp.me/pKWKW-4u

Thanks @LeahBergen for this gift. I definitely enjoyed it and it feels so good to get through a book in less than 90 minutes. #accomplishment #onedown #hundredstogo #neverendingtbr

LeahBergen I thought the artwork looked pretty great, too. I always find graphic novels a bit choppy to read (the few I‘ve read anyway ... I‘m not the biggest fan of them. 😆). 6y

This is an interesting take on Agatha Christie‘s life story — a graphic novel in which she interacts with several of her famous characters. I expect Christie fans will enjoy this book and also appreciate the many references to specific works of hers.

Not bad, but I don't think it would tell her more comprehensive fans anything new. Also, Poirot would not be caught dead in a knotted handkerchief hat, even a monogrammed one.

LauraBrook Even the idea of him wearing a hat like that made me laugh out loud - as if! 8y

Agatha Christie is my all-time favorite author, so when I heard about this book (#blameitonlitsy) I immediately borrowed it from the library. I sped through it, and it was just ok. It touched on all the phases of her life, but I wasn't that drawn in, for some reason. I'd say it's missable- read one of her novels instead!

And here you have it! The detective authors Agatha Christie deemed peers /competition during her time. I loved this graphic novel telling about her adventures on the Orient Express, being knighted by the queen, surfing in Hawaii and discovering artifacts at a archeological dig. Plus the mystery about her disappearance for 11 days prior to her husband's divorce.

I loved this fictional biography of Agatha Christie. In it, she talks to her favorite characters - Poirot, Ms.Marple and Tommy and Tuppence - throughout different milestones in her life. Based on her life, she travelled the world, became an archeologist and had her own set of adventures ( first female British surfer!) which inspired her fictional work.

Makes me want to read more Agatha Christie... glad she was as annoyed by Hercule Poirot as I am. (Maybe I'll try a Miss Marple story.)

Varshitha I havent read any Miss Marple books either.. Time to pick it up next 8y
LaurenEH57 @Varshitha I stopped reading Murder on the Orient Express because of Poirot. #bailed This graphic novel also talked about her other duo detectives (which I'd never even heard of), Tommy and Tuppence. 8y
Varshitha Ooh i had not heard of them either, thanks for letting me know.. Murder on the Orient Express is one of my favourites .. but yea Poirot can be annoying 😄 8y

LiteraryinLawrence @LaurenEH57 @Varshitha I'm an Agatha Christie nerd. Tommy and Tuppence are a cute married couple who used to be spies of some sort and now solve mysteries. At first they are young newlyweds and in the later books they are retired. Their books are good, but I prefer Poirot and Marple. 8y
