First in Tommy & Tuppence series. Their not quite love birds, but close. I enjoyed it, but it was by no means one Christie's great ones. It kept me entertained and I like the snappy dialogue between Tommy & Tuppence. I listened to this one.

😊 Happy Reading 😊

Tommy & Tuppence, 2 charming & adventurous characters stumble into a world of espionage, danger & conspiracy shortly after World War I.
The plot moves at a brisk pace with unexpected twists & turns. The dynamic between the lead characters is delightful, adding a layer of humor & warmth to the story. A thoroughly enjoyable read that will satisfy fans of classic detective fiction, this novel is sure to captivate readers from beginning to end.

Book 2 on my adventure with the ‘All About Agatha‘ podcast. I‘d never read a Tommy and Tuppence book, and kinda glad Christie wrote more Poirot and Marple books. Perhaps I prefer her style of mystery rather than spy intrigue. As for the podcast. The quality of the recording was much improved. I liked the podcast discussion alot, but again….since the book wasn‘t a hit for me, the podcast was of less interest. Next month: Murder on the Links.

This isn‘t on my bookspin list this month, but I was in the mood for an easy book. The first in Christie‘s Tommy & Tuppence series, the story involves government plots, a mysterious kingpin of a crime organization, & the usual red herrings. Plus, 2 plucky novices who decide to make money as the “Young Adventurers”. I‘m already wishing these 2 had more than a few books. Guessed the kingpin early on, but still fun.

CogsOfEncouragement Their books are fun. I enjoyed each one. 1y

63/150 I have to admit that this was a bit too much "pip pip and cheerio" for my tastes. I liked the mystery, even though I figured out Mr. Brown's identity fairly easily. Unfortunately, I found Tuppence and Tommy to be two of the most annoying characters I've ever come across in fiction. I have no desire to continue to follow their adventures. 3 ⭐⭐⭐

KathyWheeler I found Tommy and Tuppence so annoying that I never finished this book. 2y
truthinfiction Aye! Same here. I read it last year and before it I was reading Christie books exclusively. Since reading it, not so much. 😅 2y
Bookzombie I have attempted this one on audio more than once and found them annoying. However, I do like the 2015 Partners in Crime tv miniseries. 2y

Over the course of Monsieur Poirot and Miss Marple series, I have come to expect and appreciate a tight knit family mystery involving conversation, very personal motives, jealousy, and money, of course! Unlike them, Tommy and Tuppence's debut is fraught with (mis)adventures! It did have a puzzling premise regarding the identity of "The Secret Adversary" and the red herring was done very well, indeed! But I was apalled at Tommy and Tuppence's ?

truthinfiction readiness to believe anyone who came along after just having read Miss Marple's emphatic assertion that she believes nobody. Although, if you like the kind of story that keeps you wondering what might happen next, you will enjoy this. It bears Christie's signature stamp of mystery wherein observing actions rather than going by impressions and words unlocks the personality and thereby the mystery alongwith a dash of adventure and youth! 3y
LiteraryinLawrence As many times as I‘ve reread the Poirot and Marple books, I‘ve only read the T&T books once. They just don‘t do it for me in the same way. 3y
truthinfiction @LiteraryinLititz Yes, I feel you. It's hard to say why but this duo didn't work for me as miss marple and poirot do. Would you say that the other books in the series are worth reading once at least? 3y
See All 10 Comments
LiteraryinLawrence Yes, I‘d say so. It‘s still clever plotting and the duo does have a cute dynamic. And who knows? Maybe one of the later ones will become a favorite! 3y
truthinfiction @LiteraryinLititz Ahh.. thank you!!! I'll keep at it, then! Which are some of your favourite Christies? 3y
tpixie NorM was better. Written possibly because AChristie wanted to be more involved w. the war effort. She got in trouble by the Gov. b/c one character‘s name was Bletchley.Gov was concerned she knew about the secret coding section of the military(which is in the new bookThe Rose Code).Learned about this listening to Marie Benedict talk about The Mystery of Mrs. Christie. She suggests reading Murder Of Roger Ackroyd- written around AC‘s disappearance 3y
tpixie @truthinfiction @LiteraryinLititz 👆 I‘ve read these in preparation of reading for irl book club #friendswithbooks 3y
truthinfiction @tpixie That's really cool. I remember reading about the Bletchley incident. Christie said she did so 'cause she got annoyed stuck in traffic in that area once. How did you like The mystery of mrs. Christie? I have heard about it. Is ot worth reading? 3y
tpixie @truthinfiction that‘s fun Christie trivia about Bletchley. I did enjoy The Mystery of Mrs Christie, eso as / how it unfolded. I also listened to a lot of YouTube lectures the author gave which gave me more insight as well 3y

1922–the Great War is over, and jobs are scarce. Childhood friends Tommy Beresford and Prudence "Tuppence" Cowley meet and agree to start their own business as The Young Adventurers. “No (un)reasonable offer refused!” It was a challenge keeping up with all the characters and subplots—I had to watch the Amazon Prime video to get it all sorted; so between a Pick and So-so
#authoramonth2020 @Soubhiville

TheAromaofBooks I had always liked this book just fine, but a few years ago I was actually reading a bunch of nonfiction about WWI & its aftermath & happened to reread this book at the same time - I was amazed at how those crazy side plots of random spies & whatnot all made SO much more sense within the context of when the book was published. Some of her books have aged better than others!! 3y
Eggs @TheAromaofBooks oh how fascinating! I too have noticed the timeless factor of human nature in her character portrayals and conflicts. Tommy & Tuppence were quite a pair though not as well known as Poirot and Marple. 3y

I got lost a few times during this novel, unsure who was where and who knew what. In addition, people in this novel are much cleverer and more quick-witted than the majority of people I know, which gives me an uncomfortable sense of inferiority. Aside from these things, though, this is a fun audiobook for neighborhood walks, cleaning the kitchen, and assembling blank timelines for homeschool purposes.

TheAromaofBooks I've always loved this one because I love Tommy & Tuppence, but a few years ago I was actually studying European history in the nineteen-teens and happened to reread this book at the same time - and couldn't believe how it made so much more sense! All those crazy spies & whatnot actually fit into what was going on when Christie wrote the book. It was fun to have that extra layer of understanding... although I probably don't remember it all now!! 3y
ImperfectCJ @TheAromaofBooks That's very cool! It seems like WWI and the years between the wars often get overshadowed by WWII, at least in the US, but it's a very interesting period. And this was the first I'd heard of Tommy & Tuppence...they are delightful! 3y

The first Tommy and Tuppence book. I‘m giving this a pick, but Dame Agatha is much better at murder mystery than political intrigue. I felt this was a little slow at the beginning and the red herring was pretty obvious. It‘s one of the few Christies I figured out before the big reveal.

I finally finished October‘s read for #AgathaChristieClubR2! This was my second time through The Secret Adversary, and I loved it! Although it does start awfully slow. Tuppence is my favorite; I can‘t help smiling every time she speaks. I did cringe every time an American was described though — Is that how the British truly saw us? Is that how we were? (Are we still seen that way??) I felt the same way reading Conan Doyle last month. 🧐

Here are your discussion questions for The Secret Adversary! #agathachristieclubR2

1.) What are your first impressions of Tommy and Tuppence? Does your opinion change by the end of the book?
2.) How does WWI impact the plot and characters?
3.) This is the first of many Christie thrillers. How do you like them compared to the traditional puzzle mystery?
4.) Some critics have noted the use of coincidence in the plot... 👇

ferskner ...(Tuppence using Jane Finn's name, for example.). How do you feel about this choice? 4y
ferskner 5.) Did you figure out the identity of Mr. Brown? What clues helped or confused you? 4y
ferskner 6.) Who was your favorite side character? Why? 4y
See All 31 Comments
ferskner 7.) Can you see Christie's writing change or grow stronger in her second book? 4y
AnneCecilie My library didn‘t have this book, but I‘ll be joining you again next month 4y
Laughterhp I didn‘t read this one this month. I previously tried and bailed. I‘m definitely reading along next month! 4y
Librarybelle 1. I think I‘m in the minority on this, but Tommy and Tuppence slightly get on my nerves. I can understand why Christie wrote them as eager and clever young people seeking adventure in post World War I, but I can‘t quite get into their persona. I think you see each of their strengths as they go through the adventures in this book. I do know too, from reading others, that you see their characters develop over the other novels. 4y
Librarybelle 2. Part of Mr Brown‘s henchmen are German and Russian. There‘s talk of the plans spirited from the Lusitania going into the wrong hands and causing worldwide turmoil; these relate to plans made during the war. Tommy is also a veteran. 4y
Librarybelle 3. I like a good mix of thrillers and puzzle mysteries. This one has a flavor of danger, which makes it thrilled-like. I think, overall though, I like Christie‘s puzzles more. She‘s known for her locked room antics, and she does pay tribute a tiny bit with that, thanks to the room in Soho that is hiding the much coveted papers. 4y
Librarybelle 4. I didn‘t really think of it as coincidence, actually. Honestly, I didn‘t really think anything of it! 4y
Librarybelle 5. This is my second reading of this, and I couldn‘t quite remember the twist. Christie almost got me again, clearly leading the reader to think that Julius was Mr Brown. She‘s also a master at red herrings. I‘m usually terrible at identifying the killer or the bad guy or the villain in books, unless it is really spelled out. 🙃 4y
Librarybelle 6. I couldn‘t help but appreciate Albert‘s enthusiasm. A detective in the making! He‘s eager and almost makes a couple bad blunders, but he‘s highly likable. 4y
Librarybelle 7. I feel like the twists in this book were constructed a little better than Styles. Honestly, I liked Styles more than this, but as I stated in an earlier answer, I‘m not a big Tommy and Tuppence fan. 4y
Linsy 1. My first impressions of them are that they‘re fun and smart, but Tuppence is the one pulling things along. My opinion of Tommy raises by the end of the book. 4y
Linsy @Librarybelle It‘s interesting because I can see what you mean, but I just love their characters so much! I wonder how much of this has to do with encountering them in different books and movies. I particularly love their rapport in the Partners in Crime short stories, that was where I first read and fell in love with them, after watching the most recent tv series of the same name. So I really have no idea what I‘d think coming to this book cold. (edited) 4y
Linsy 2. I know that WWII has a lot to do with the plot — the papers, etc. — but it was almost secondary. Every time it was brought up, I was almost caught off guard. I kept forgetting it was part of it. Maybe I‘m just obtuse. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
Linsy 3. I‘m not sure which I like more — thriller or classic mystery — I‘ll need to read more. 4y
Linsy @ferskner 4. I thought it was fine — How else would they have gotten themselves caught up in this business? — but it is a bit on the nose. 4y
Linsy @ferskner 5. What‘s funny is that I‘ve read this before. I was on the right track for a bit, but that picture in the hotel room completely swayed me! 4y
Linsy @ferskner 6. Albert! He was adorable. I found Hersheimmer obnoxious and Jane Finn flat, unfortunately. 4y
Linsy @ferskner 7. I don‘t know about writing per se, but I appreciated less exhaustive explanations. But that might just be Poirot‘s style. I‘ve only read two of his books, but I found Hallowe‘en Party less didactic. 4y
ferskner @AnneCecilie @Laughterhp I'm looking forward to your thoughts on Murder on the Links! 4y
ferskner @Librarybelle @Linsy 1. I'm a fan of Tommy and Tuppence themselves, but not so much this mystery. I think it's overall pretty clever, but it's also a bit convoluted. I really love the 1980s portrayal of their relationship, but I didn't like the changes the recent adaptation made. 4y
ferskner @Librarybelle @Linsy 2. agreed with everything you pointed out, and also that both T&T are part of that lost generation of WWI survivors who were without work and direction in the aftermath of the war. I love how Christie subtly incorporates this issue into the beginning of the book without being preachy about it. 4y
ferskner @Librarybelle @Linsy 3. I'm not a huge fan of the thrillers! I think I like this one the best of all, but I much prefer the puzzle murder mysteries. Jess, you make a good point that she includes small elements of the puzzles into this. 4y
ferskner @Librarybelle @Linsy 4. Haha yes, exactly, too on the nose! I'm fine with some coincidence for the sake of the plot but this seemed a bit heavy handed to me. 4y
ferskner @Librarybelle @Linsy 5.) I agree! I knew the answer in theory from watching the adaptations but I think she does a great job of making you forget that there's another potential solution to the mystery. The photo in the hotel really is sneaky! 4y
ferskner @Librarybelle @Linsy 6.) Haha everyone loves Albert! It's pretty hard to not find him charming. 4y
ferskner @librarybelle @Linsy 7.) I think she feels more adventurous with this book about willing to push farther, but I think that's to its detriment. Styles feels more assured to me, but she's having more fun with this book. I guess there're plus and minuses to both! 4y
Linsy @ferskner @librarybelle I do like how she dealt with that issue so deftly. It really brings you into the time and place. 4y

I picked this up after the relevant episode of the Shedunnit podcast. It‘s an outlandish plot involving international Bolshevik conspiracies and lots of eeeevil schemes, all thwarted by the two title sleuths who wouldn‘t be much out of place in a Wodehouse novel. I enjoyed it a lot and will be keeping an eye out for more in the series.

Not my favorite Christie. This is the 1st of her four Tommy & Tuppence books which lean more toward thriller/suspense than murder mystery. What I do love, however, is these facsimile reprints if the original covers! If I had the space and the💰 I would get them all!😍

Been AWOL over last few days with a very busy week at work and doing a Group Read on Librarything, but the weekend has now arrived and I can put in an appearance! 😊👍👏🎉🤗
These are my weekend plans, finish off The Poet and The Enemy. Read the next sections in the #BOTMBuddyRead and #LitsyBuddyRead (The Music Shop and BearTown) and start (and hopefully finish at least one of) Death Of a Dustman and The Secret Adversary.

EadieB That‘s a very busy weekend! I‘ve read The Secret Adversary. I like Tommy and Tuppence! Gave it 4 stars! (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Weekends usually are as that‘s when I can get reading done, although have to visit family too so will lose some reading time. Problem though is sometimes I get too tired to read after a busy week! 3 of the books I have got four hours reading or less! Always aim to finish at least one book each weekend but as close to finishing a few, who knows! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 You may just surprise yourself and get it done! 6y

Andrew65 @EadieB My library got just bought The Secret Adversary as an audiobook and was lucky enough to pinch it before others noticed! 😂😍 As got 240 miles of driving time to see family, perfect opportunity to listen to it. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Hopefully! 🤞 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 You should get it done if you are going that many miles for sure! 6y
Chellebearss That‘s a great weekend lineup!! 6y
TrishB Loved The Poet 👍🏻 6y
Andrew65 @Chellebearss Definitely, Thanks. 😊 6y
Andrew65 @TrishB A very enjoyable boom with quite a complex plot so far. 😊 (edited) 6y
Lmstraubie I have loved everything I have read by Fredrick Backmann so far. 6y
Andrew65 @Lmstraubie This is only the second book I have read by him, but would have to agree so far. 6y

Eh, I prefer Poirot. And each time Christie described Tuppence as a “terrier” it rubbed me the wrong way.

Pickpick

Never read this series of Agatha Christie before but it was action packed and very delightful. Definitely going to check out the rest of the books in this series
