Diana must forget all she thought she knew about Queen Elizabeth I's rise to the throne as she delves into the past of her partner to find out what really happened in that fateful month of November, 1558. It is just so much better' anarmchairbythesea.blogspot.co.uk 'Once again Harkness has managed to create a world filled with not only love and romance but action and history, with characters you can love and hate, but always understand and relate to. Blaming this on @LeeRHarry and @TrishB

I liked the parts about Marcus's past. I wasn't very interested in what Diana and Matthew's toddler twins were doing.

When do I get to see more Gallowglass?

#SeriesLove2024 @TheSpineView @Andrew65

@RaeLovesToRead - just noticed the teeny tiny subtitle 🤣🤣

RaeLovesToRead OMG that's even worse... if you HAVE to declare something is "a novel" at least do it loud and proud! ?? 5mo
TheSpineView Great job! 5mo
TrishB Well your curiosity is addressed! 5mo
LeeRHarry Agreed @TrishB 😊 my next comment will be about the new book so….. 5mo

Finishing up the tagged book so that I can start the next one in the series, The Black Bird Oracle. Also, enjoying a nice cup of tea in a mug from one of my favorite bookstores here in Texas. If you ever find yourself in Denton, TX, check out Patchouli Joe's Books & Indulgences.

Texreader I had no idea there‘s another book in the series! Yay!! 5mo
Addison_Reads @Texreader the official release date is the 16th, but our copy came in early at the library, and since I can't put it on the shelf until the release date, I brought it home. One of the perks of being the person who catalogs new books. 😁 5mo
Texreader I just ordered a copy. Sending it to my mom first since she‘s caught up on the series and I‘m not. But I love it!! 5mo

So, I am starting this one again. (Picking up where I left off). I am using this as my #AudioBackLog book for #BookSpinBingo.

Maybe the reason why I was/am not feeling it is because of the whole history thing. I am not huge into historical fiction-type books.

Bk2 of #JoysOfJune #readathon was finished a few days ago. Picked up another cold & have had a headache the last few days, screen light was a bit too harsh. This one was a reread of the companion book to the All Souls trilogy. The story of Marcus & Phoebe mostly, it tells of how he became a vampire & his struggles with it & of Phoebes rebirth as his mate & vampire. Really want a Gallowglass or Philippe & Ysabeau book! #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2023

TheSpineView Great job! 2y
Andrew65 Brilliant. I really must get back to this series. I was really enjoying book 1 was about a third of the way through then COvID hit me. Will need to start again after all this time 🥵 2y

Bk2 of the End Of Summer(Winter) #20in4 #readathon is done. Finally! Read whilst #audioknitting it distracted me from the pain of having two molars ripped out this week. Fun times🦷 A companion novel to the All Souls trilogy, it‘s a threefold story told between two time periods. It‘s the tale of Phoebes transformation to vampire, Dianna, Mathew & the twins ongoing story & the tale of Marcus‘ rebirth during the American Revolution. #BookspinBingo

Lizpixie Now we just need Gallowglass‘ story, Philippe & Ysabeau‘s, Hugh & Fernando‘s & maybe Baldwins! #SeriesRead2022 2y

I got an email from my alma mater, Moravian College, today, with this picture of the historic Brethren‘s House, which housed part of the music department and where I spent a lot of time. It reminded me of the scenes in the tagged book that take place in Bethlehem during the Revolutionary War, one of them in this intersection, and mention of this building specifically. Feeling very nostalgic.

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards So cool to have such a specific local setting - I'll have to read it! 2y
Lynnsoprano @SaunteringVaguelyDownwards I know this book has gotten mixed reviews. Have you read the All Souls trilogy? Without having read that, I doubt this would be enjoyable. 2y

I loved the All Souls trilogy but I've never read anything quite this self indulgent. Harkness obviously wanted to share her history knowledge and create something in the same world but Marcus is so one dimensional it was tedious to read. All the action is in flashbacks, so you know what happens or surmise that all will be well. And Phoebe just isn't interesting enough for me to care about. Really disappointing, I'm surprised I finished it.

So, I am not going to DNF this one, not yet, but I am going to just take it off my actively reading list and .. maybe retry it later? I just can't and I feel like it's just hanging there. I have 8 hours left!? ugh! I should just DNF but... I am wishy-washy about it

Lizpixie @TheAromaofBooks yes, I‘m pretty sure he has a bit of colic so he‘s fussing a lot, especially at night. She‘s not the type to deal well with no sleep plus seeing your newborn in pain is so stressful, I‘m happy to spend as much time as possible with them both and help her be the wonderful mother I know she is. 3y
TheAromaofBooks Oh yes, my niece was a very colicky baby and it felt like no one got any sleep for three months!! 1. The tagged book, because a portion of it takes place during the Revolutionary War in Bethlehem, PA. It talks about a hospital for wounded soldiers. That was our music department study room while I was in college. I felt like I was there 😄
2. It doesn‘t really matter, but I find myself reading more books set in England or continental Europe than anywhere else.

The main part of the book was devoted to telling Marcus‘ history which I enjoyed. It also covered Pheobe‘s early days as a vampire and her struggles as she adjusted.
I felt like the parts focusing on Diana and Matthew didn‘t quite fit. Like those could have been a separate book leaving this one devoted to Marcus and Phoebe.

1. Tagged book is a book I hugely enjoyed, set across the American Civil War and the French Revolution.
2. I really liked What we do in the shadows! The TV show got boring very quickly though, the gags really don't land after a while.
3. I would recommend the tagged book, and Deborah Harkness' Discovery of witches series.
The photo is me outside Bram Stoker's house in Chelsea, pretending to be terrified!!

For fans of the All Souls trilogy, this continues the story of Matthew & Diana & Phoebe. It‘s really about Marcus, his history, & his struggle with regrets & past choices. I liked this story, but not much happens, & it‘s not as good as the trilogy.

Ms Harkness puts her considerable talents to use in this, the 4th book in her All Souls series. She gives us Marcus McNeil‘s back story taking place, largely, during the American and French Revolutions. Marcus, the vampiric son of Matthew Clairmont, is a healer. Fun story.

I missed Diana Bishop, who does not play a central, although the twins are coming into their powers in interesting ways. Not as great as the early books, but worth a read.

Alright. So. I liked this one a lot more than Book of Life, mostly because I love Marcus. I have lots of issues with it though, mainly the telling-not-showing writing fails, the sheer amount of characters, and the sometimes out-of-character actions of longtime staples, but I liked it. It was a different perspective from the other three books (finally!) and had the past-narrative that I loved about the second book. A solid 3/5

#quaranreads

mollyrotondo Uhh I hated Book of Life too! 5y
MsRadioSilence @mollyrotondo i think my biggest problem with it was Diana and Matthew. I hated their characters! That and it was just really boring for how long the book was 🥱 5y
mollyrotondo @MsRadioSilence it was horribly boring, I agree. Nothing happened for the majority of that book. There was no reason to continue to follow Diana and Matthew at that point 5y
