Today I spent approximately 13 hours in a tractor disking ahead of Dad planting soybeans. A good portion of that time was also spent listening to this great book. I have done other reading and learning on this topic, so I‘m not sure I learned much new information. Yet, it was an incredibly well put together summary of the lives of the six women that became wives of HenryVIII, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I really enjoyed this!
I liked how instead of each part is a biography of a wife, it's the wives coming into the story.

If you‘re #Tudorobsessed like I am, definitely consider reading this one!! It took me about a month to read it and I loved every word. This is nonfiction but it was just as compelling as even the most thrilling fiction story. I‘m certain having some prior knowledge of Henry VIII and his wives helped me enjoy it to the fullest. I really feel like I got to know them over the course of these 600 pages. #chunkster

Just over halfway thru and Anne Boleyn has just been killed. Two wives down, and around half of the book left to tell of the other four.

I‘m LOVING the way Alison Weir wrote this nonfiction account. It reads so easily and I can see myself reading more of her fiction AND nonfiction in the future. #Tudorobsessed

Repost for @ljuliel

#keepLitsyactive #historybooks

Today's book question: What time frame do you enjoy reading about? If you don't like NF, history or historical fiction, is there a time frame you prefer? Like modern day, 1950s, 1930s? Please repost with a book you enjoyed from that time frame!

I love reading anything about Henry VIII and really enjoyed the tagged book 🤴

ljuliel Thanks for posting. It‘s really interesting that out of all the answers, we‘ve had very few that are the same. Lots of variety. 4y
wordslinger42 @ljuliel Of course! 😊 I'm surprised at the variety, too, but it's cool to learn about so many books that I probably wouldn't have discovered otherwise! 4y

Finished the book days before seeing SIX in Chicago on the 20th. Great to have background into the lives of the women that inspired the musical. The show was so spirited, fun, and clever and the talent of the six “ex-wives” was incredible. So glad I got to see it!

This was a heavy duty one, but it's one of my favorite time periods. I have a soft spot the the Tudors.

Henry and Anne looked ‘like dogs falling out of a window‘, so dismayed they were by the news. 🐕🤔

She was rational enough in love to realise that Henry was in many ways immature, and sensible enough not to let him know it.

I couldn‘t put this book down for good without giving Henry VIII‘s other three wives their due. In the end I think I admire Anne of Cleves the most. She had the good sense to accept the comparatively fine offer of a divorce from Henry. None of them lived long, though. 👇

Susannah Anne of Cleves outlived both Henry and his last wife, Katharine Parr, but still died at 43, a rather young age for a woman who bore no children nor fell victim to her (ex-)husband‘s propensity for violence towards the people who had been close to him. 👇 5y
Susannah I think it‘s the concentrated misogyny that unnerves me so much, and it probably shouldn‘t. It‘s not like women were anything but chattel in any other historical setting. Still, depressing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (edited) 5y
Susannah @rubyslippersreads I‘ve never even heard of it. Thank you for mentioning it! 5y

390 pages in, and Henry‘s first three wives are dead because of his insane drive to have a son. As ever, the ironies are that science has taught us that the male parent is responsible for the sex of his children; and it would be his daughter who became the most famous monarch in English history. (Did someone say “karma”?)

“History‘s about to get overthrown!” — Six

I‘ve recently been obsessed with Six — a musical about Henry VIII‘s wives — and rereading the book that taught me to love historical non-fiction. Unfortunately, my husband, does not share my enthusiasm. To be fair, I have been singing it a lot (and loudly) and trying to explain the hilarious lyrics while I relearn details about the Tudor queens. 👑
