Content-wise, I felt this was more of a review for me, given that I had started my meanderings into cosmology/physics with Brian Greene‘s “The Elegant Universe.” But it‘s not lacking in star appeal (no pun intended)…I‘m a huge fan of Stephen Hawking, RIP. I‘d recommend this short book to anyone wanting their black holes, neutrinos and particle colliders put in introductory lay terms, from a famed theoretical physicist with a sense of humor.

This is the first book of every science enthusiastic person. This book describes the beginning of time, big bang and how it may end. As Prof Hawking was famous for his black hole hypothesis, hence more about that singularity is being explained in a reader friendly way.

This is my first book finished for the #BooklyReadathon. It‘s been on my #tbr for years, so I‘m glad that I finally got around to reading it! Can‘t say I fully understood it, but it was interesting. I feel like I‘ll have to do several rereads for all that info to really sink in. Another one for my #BookBucketList! 4/5⭐️

MemoirsForMe Yay! You‘re really putting a big dent in your TBRs! 3y

💛💛💛💛 Absolutely fascinating read. Although I couldn't get my head around a good portion of the book, I feel I have a better understanding about the big questions. It makes you realise just how small and insignificant we really are in the grade scale of the universe.

I listened to this book on audio and it‘s one of those books that make you realize how much you don‘t know and how some people think about and wonder about things that never even cross my mind.

I didn‘t understand a lot in this book, but man..when I did understand something it felt great!

I have had this book on my shelves at least ten years. One of these days I will read it.😋

Eggs I need to read this... 4y
Read-y_Picker I often find myself thinking of the party he threw, for which he sent invites only after the event in hopes that people from the future would attend once they'd invented means to travel through time. I like to imagine that a coalition of time-travellers actively decided not to attend considering that the confirmation of that technology would alter the course of history. I wonder if Hawking considered that as well.
4y
meghathecloud @Read-y_Picker Now, I am wondering how a coalition of time travellers will communicate with its members🤔 4y

Even though I had quite some difficulties with this book (Hello, dyscalculia!), I did learn a few things by reading this book. I enjoyed the chapter about time travel and finally know for real what micro waves are.

But all in all Hawking writes for another audience than I am. I'm just an interested layman with little knowledge. People who just started getting into physics I'd recommend Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Hawking later on.

Buechersuechtling Kudos that you made it through‼️👏🏼 What you describe matches exactly my own experience. I have a wonderful edition of this book so I would be really happy to read it. I tried several times very hard but each time needed to give up soon because I just understood – nothing. I‘d really _love_ to read this book but reading without understanding makes no sense. Pun unintended. But, yeah, literally. 😇 5y

A Brief History of Time will be great if you‘re after an introduction to the fundamentals of hard science and cosmology, and you‘re determined enough (slash clever enough) to persist through dry writing. If you‘d rather have a laugh with a light read and you‘re not taking the subject too seriously, maybe check out A Short History of Nearly Everything instead. I promised myself that for 2019 I would choose challenge myself as a reader. That means reading books that are out of my comfort zone. Stephen Hawking's bestselling book is one of those books. Science was never my strong suit in school, but I do love science documentaries and I always wanted to read Hawking. I understood about 65% of the book, I had to look up a few things, but I feel I have learned a bit. 3/5 stars.

Amazing book for those who want do discover and understand were the planet came from, and how the universe was created and how he works.
Hawking makes a "bridge" from is theories to another famous ones, like theories from Einstein, Newton or Galileo. It also presents theories from other famous scientists. Although professor Hawking as a great sense of humor and a good way to explain things, sometimes the book gets too technical.

Hawking tackles mind-blowing subjects such as: the origin of the universe, elementary particles, black holes, the fate of the universe, the concept of time, worm holes, time travel, and the unification of theories of physics. The 2017 version includes an updated forward and an appendix with updates of some of the topics covered in the main text. These include: dark energy, the multiverse, and gravitational waves. Science geeks will love this book!

To be honest, I‘m not sure I really followed and I‘m not sure that the parts I had trouble with were actually difficult. I just seemed to always be teetering just on the edge of just understanding, which only really works if I‘m memorizing everything. And, well, maybe once years ago... 👇👇

Graywacke
I like the the idea of space time plotted as a globe where the big bang is one pole, like the north pole, and the other pole is the big crunch and so there is no edge, just a continuum of physics. Except the universe expansion is accelerating, which means that‘s maybe not the right image.
7y
sloanghost I feel like this series is very much...an experimental narrative structure, and those can be fascinating while also not being necessarily accessible or pleasant to read. But that's a fun thing to dip into now and again because it's gripping and thought provoking in that way! 7y
Graywacke @sloanghost yes, definitely thought provoking! I know he took out all the equations (except e=mc^2). And I wonder if in some cases it actually made the book less accessible. 7y
