Question for the hive intelligence: I like to give business to independent bookstores, but can't find alternatives for international books. I'm especially interested in books from the German language market. Bookshop.org, Indie bound, and Powell's.com consistently don't have the titles I look for. Amazon and B&N seem like the only sources. Anybody know of a good indie shop (serving the U.S. market) for international stock?

Ruthiella I‘m sure you can order direct from independent bookstores in German speaking countries, but it‘s the shipping costs that make it so expensive. Maybe @julesG or @Jari-chan have tips? 3mo
julesG As @Ruthiella said, you could order from German independent shops, but postage is going to cost an arm and a leg. 3mo
swynn @Ruthiella @julesG Yeah, sources for ebooks would be ideal, and after that an American retailer/distributor who would be able to minimize shipping costs. Although if I wanted a book bad enough to pay overseas shipping, I might as well pay a bookstore for it as Amazon.de, so if you have a favorite bookstore who ships overseas, I'd certainly make a note of it. 3mo

thegreensofa I get my French novels from Abbey‘s Bookshop in Sydney Australia. They do German books as well and they post internationally (I think for AUD$25). They are a well known Independent book store in Australia and our biggest in languages. If you search by title it‘s an easy site and they happily order in anything that they don‘t have already in stock. I recommend them if the postage isn‘t too steep. And they have a rewards program that doesn‘t expire 3mo
swynn @thegreensofa Thanks! 3mo
julesG EBooks is tricky. You can't buy EBooks from independent shops here in Germany. There are only two large retailers who offer EBooks (Amazon and Thalia.de). I'll ask around whether some of the bigger cities' libraries offer online loaning to non-residents. 3mo
rwmg A German-speaking friend said Scribd (now called Everand) has a good selection of German language ebooks. It works on a subscription model so you pay a monthly fee for as many books as you want. (edited) 3mo
swynn @rwmg Thanks for this suggestion. I hadn't even thought of subscription services, but searching Scribd I can see that they have done if the titles I've looked for. It's a good option to keep in mind 3mo
Bookwomble You might try Abebooks. You can filter to search books in your continent or specific country, if you know the title in German: https://www.abebooks.com/ 3mo
swynn @Bookwomble Also a good suggestion. I do usually check Abebooks, and sometimes find what I'm looking for, though usually with overseas shipping 3mo

It‘s coming up so soon! Anyone else excitedly plotting routes, making wishlists?

Megabooks Yes! My two local bookstores are small, but I‘d like to buy one book from each! 12mo
Jess I‘m hoping to be visiting DC for the day and trying out some new indie bookstores there. 12mo

AmyG I love my little indie bookstore. I will be there….Like I need more books 😳 12mo
Jess @Lcsmcat sweet! Thanks for the recommendation. 12mo
Lcsmcat @Jess I‘ve “attended” their online events, but haven‘t actually been there. My sister used to live in the area and loved it. 12mo
Fortifiedbybooks Dewey's 24-Hour Readathon is also on the 29th! Thankfully, I enjoy audiobooks so I can walk around a bookstore while participating in the readathon at the same time 😁 12mo
Hooked_on_books Sadly I have no options here, but I‘m impatiently awaiting Libro‘s sale! 😉 12mo
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books you‘ll have to have a postponed shopping celebration the next time you travel. 📚 12mo

Have you heard?

‘Independent bookshops have joined forces to back the launch of a new online retailer taking on Amazon in the run-up to Christmas. The site, which launches in the UK on Monday, launched in the US in January, and rapidly grew in the face of the pandemic, raising 7.5 mil $ for independent US bookshops.‘

Liz_M How fantastic that they are expanding to the UK! I bought quite a few books through Bookshop.org when NYC was in lockdown and I couldn't go to the library or the independent bookstore down the street. 3y
sprainedbrain This is great! 3y

wanderinglynn I‘ve been buying from Bookshop for a while now. They have great customer service. 👍🏻 3y
JamieArc Great news! I‘ve been buying from them during the pandemic. They aren‘t overly expensive, and while it takes longer than 2 days to arrive, it‘s well worth the wait. 3y
JazzFeathers This is such a great news! I knew there must be a way to sustained indipendente bookshops. I hope this will come to my country too, eventually. 3y
CarolynM Sounds like a good plan. Are you receiving mail again, Jessie? 3y
erzascarletbookgasm @CarolynM We can receive mails, just the outgoing international mails are suspended 🤷‍♀️ 3y

Current @Powells book haul since the start of quarantine is up to 37. 😱 I‘m buying faster than I can read, but I just do not want them to go out of business! ❤️ 📚 #powellsbooks

night_shift I feel you! I've been a little more restrained but buying from local places instead of Amazon has been priority 4y
Onceuponatime @UnidragonFrag Yes, I‘m realizing it now more than ever! Glad to hear you‘re doing the same thing ❤️ 4y
Hooked_on_books The idea of them not being there freezes me to the core. It‘s just an awful thought. I resubscribed to Indiespensable in my effort to try to help them out. My major reading goal this year is to stop buying books faster than I can read them, so this has caused a lot of cognitive dissonance for me. I‘m glad to see them getting a lot of support! 4y
See All 6 Comments
Onceuponatime @Hooked_on_books It is really sad to think of many small businesses going out of business permanently. I generally like to use the library, but I agree that bookstores especially need our support right now! 4y
night_shift @Onceuponatime it is really sad :( one of my favorite local bookstores is only 2 years old and I've been trying to support her as much as I can. Because of this conversation, I caved and bought some more things from Powells 😅 4y

#ReadSoulLit - Roots and Books: There was an indie book store called the The Hue-Man Experience in this small community known as Five Points. It was cool because it must have been a two-story home at one time, but now every nook and cranny was occupied by books. And? It was black owned and the books were Black Literature as it was called in those days and the authors were shades of brown hues.👇🏽

Nute And? It was something to behold if you were a young African-American reader who made weekend trips to the library and the local Barnes&Noble/Borders/B. Daltons/Waldenbooks...and found that the choices were limited for stories with characters who looked like you and you were hard pressed to find representation. I remember being told that “black people don‘t read books.”👇🏽 4y
Nute I remember wondering ‘Does that mean that people of color do not write books as well?‘ Then I discovered a little piece of heaven right here on earth. A bookstore filled to the rim with books written by black authors about black people and black histories and black stories and black myths and black legends and black lives with covers showing black folks for all readers and any readers👇🏽 (edited) 4y
Nute and proving to a young black girl that people of color do write books and black folks do read literature and poetry and essays and romance and nonfiction. We are rooted in storytelling! These days it‘s good to walk into an around-the-way bookstore and see all hues and shades of people having an opportunity to reach an audience - their reader! Sharing rooted memories about books and reading with my Litsy family!💕

Nute @MicheleinPhilly Thank you for reading it! Sometimes I wonder if I am putting too much out there in a digital space, but somehow it feels okay here.☺️ 4y
Nute @Lcsmcat It was a wonderful bookstore. Unfortunately it has met its demise twice over. It relocated from the Midwest to the east coast in the early 2000s and then closed the Harlem bookstore in 2012. I‘m so happy that I have memories of that literary footprint.🤗 4y
Nute @WomanistBibliophile My kindred sister, Cara. I‘m digging your poetry posts!💕 4y
