Il seggio vacante | J.K. Rowling

I found this slow in parts, and it took ages for me to get a handle on who was who, but it sucked me in. I found it to be a clever, sad and insightful analysis of people, using the backdrop of a small town and the machinations of a council election to highlight truths. We see the same human behaviours in our own every day lives...at work, at home.. This is worth a read and reflection, as it's possible to relate to its of every character

Friday night‘s finds in my building‘s book exchange. I‘ve never read any Rowling so thought I‘d start with this one. I am stuck in lockdown for at least another 2 weeks (which I am thankful for as it keeps me safe as I can‘t get vaccinated until September) so armchair travel is my only option. It‘s a gorgeous book. I wish Litsy did videos for this reason. The Reader‘s Digest reminds me of my best friend from high school. I read it for nostalgia.

I went into this not expecting much, and I was surprised that I didn't hate it based on other reviews I've read over the years. I probably would have enjoyed it more had it been a bit shorter. Parts of this book seemed to drag on forever.

Overall, Rowling did a great job of showing us the secrets and lives of small town people.

I enjoyed reading it, because I feel the characters were really fleshed out. Not sure if I was happy with the ending. A slow paced read suitable to pass time but not exactly an effortless one.

As a lover of Harry Potter, and a huge fan of J.K. Rowling, I really wanted to love this book aimed for adults. But it honestly left me disappointed. Maybe my expectations were high, but I had a difficult time caring about these characters. Most of them seemed like awful human beings, and the plot was a bit dull, in my opinion. Her writing style, descriptions, and the level of drama were the only reasons I was able to read it through to the end.

Was not that great. I wasn't expecting it to be Harry Potter, but I also wasn't expecting it to be a bad book. Every single character is flawed, none of them have any redeemable qualities to make their flaws forgivable. It didn't seem to have a 'point' except to force the reader to voyeuristically watch everyone suffer and be miserable. (sorry no selfie for this book, deleted from my Kindle before I thought to take a picture!)

DivineDiana That‘s unfortunate. I have this book on my TBR shelves. 😕 6y
Runner5ive You may like it a lot better than I did. It's essentially about a drug addict single parent and their child who live in poverty, which I have experienced myself as a child. So I don't really like reading books about it, intended to 'entertain' me. 6y

This novel has not received the acclaim it should because it was her first book after HP under her name. But if you pick up a glass of milk expecting orange juice you are not going to like it - or even recognize what it is. I think that is what happened with this book: a lot of disappointment about what it is not.

Full disclosure: I read this solely because Queen Rowling wrote it.
90% of the book was very slow moving and I'm not 100% there was an actual plot beyond "how one person's death affected a town", but the last few sections were very good. Rowling is a master at writing characters (even though most in this book were terrible people) and the world they move in. Harry Potter, this is not, nor is it my taste, but it wasn't bad.

Bailing at 160 pages....I keep looking at it and I‘d rather do something else then pick it up and read....including hoovering! I just don‘t care enough about any of the characters to want to know what happens. Definitely a marmite book.

It‘s so hard to rate this. The writing and character development in this book are amazing. Rowling is a master at having dozens of characters—and you care about all of them! But on the other hand, I would not recommend this book. It is fairly crude, nonredemptive, and bleak. It definitely takes a lot to keep reading it. Very good, but also very gross. But maybe that‘s just me, expecting books to be happy and entertaining? Not all books need to be.

I‘ve been reading the book, off and on, for a long time. There are a lot of characters and most of them have nicknames, so they were hard to sort out throughout most of the book. Watching the miniseries on HBO, really helped put faces to names and sort everyone out. The show is not the same as the book, I was surprised at the stuff they changed. The end of this book is absolutely heartbreaking. I‘m going to give it 3.5 stars.

Did a bunch of cleaning so now it‘s time for a bit of relaxing (bubble bath, “candle”, and book)! I was given the Yankee Candle melt cups as an alternative to candles for the bathroom to reduce the number of open flames on the bathtub ledge 😳

I‘ve read the book before but the mood struck to re-read it and book moods cannot be ignored.

readingjedi I am tempted by the Scenterpiece for similar reasons. Does it give a good throw? 7y
Bookish_AF @readingjedi Mine works really well in the bathroom. I haven‘t had it that long so I‘ve only tried out a few scents so far. The first one I had was almost punch you in the face strong (it was one of the fall scents) but the one I currently have is much milder! It says they last about 24 hours but I‘ve never kept track. I just got a bunch of new scents during a sale so I‘m excited to try them! 7y

Yesterday I got the first J.K. Rowling book that wasn‘t A Harry Potter book. I can‘t to read it. What did you all think of this one? Good like Harry Potter or completely different?

ChaitanyaSethi It is nothing like Harry Potter. You mustn't think of comparing the two otherwise you won't be able to appreciate this book for what it is. It is a departure from Rowling's usual writing style. But I genuinely enjoyed this book, bleak as it may be. 7y
TrishB Agreed - nothing like HP! 7y
Marianna_Reads I agree with the other two previous posts, but this book is so good. It proves that JK is the master of character development! 7y

Jerdencon I liked it a lot too but not at all like Harry Potter. 7y
Kaylamburson I haven‘t read this one but I LOVED The Cuckoo‘s Calling. She really is amazing at character development. 7y
RosieBoo65 I did not like this book at all. Probably one of my all time worst books. 7y
darklydreaming I have this book but have yet to read it! Loved Harry Potter (obv) but haven't been compelled to read this one. Let us know how it is!! 7y
Ubookquitous Not at all like HP. Small village politics that revolve around a sudden death of a council member - great characters, subtle humor, lots of social commentary. I listened to the audio which was good 7y
PenguinInFlight I haven‘t read this one, but I have read some of the ones she writes as Robert Galbraith - Cuckoo‘s Calling and The Silkworm - and I liked both of those a lot. Nothing like HP, plot-wise, but her writing is still fantastic. (edited) 7y
staci.reads Don't go into it expecting it to feel anything like the HP books or you'll be disappointed. It's a good book though in its own right. I really liked it. 7y
Bookish_AF Just this morning I was thinking of re-reading this! I liked it as well, but as others have said, it‘s not even remotely similar to HP. I also adored her Robert Galbraith series. 7y
BookishBelle It‘s nothing like HP. I didn‘t like it much but it was very well done. 7y
BethwithBooks I agree with many of the other comments - this was a DNF for me but I hope to go back and finish it at some point. I much prefer her Galbraith ones. Still nothing like Harry Potter but great in their own right. 7y
BridgetteM This is the only J.K. Rowling book I haven‘t read. I‘ve loved everything else she‘s done! 7y
carguywalt Honestly I didn‘t like it. I wish I had spent the time reading something else. Harry Potter is not my thing so I can‘t compare it. 7y
AmberWB I agree- I finished, but found it so upsetting. I LOVE the Galbraith books though! 7y
Cosyreader I didn‘t like it. It was too long and there were too many characters. I‘ve heard the Robert Galbraith ones are good but after reading this I decided I just don‘t like her writing. But still give it a go! 7y
LiteraryLona I tried it a few years ago and hated it. :( 7y
Burghbookaddict Most people I talked to hated this book but I really liked it. It reminded me of the area I grew up in. Which is why I moved.... 7y
Chelleo Off-Topic: I have a question for you. Can you email me at Chelleo.Michelle@gmail.com ? 7y
tonyahoswalt I haven't read it, but everyone I know that did said it was depressing. I did read and enjoy the Cormoran Strike books she wrote as Robert Galbraith though. 7y
East_Of_Imagination I wasn‘t a fan, I did not finish. I prefer to read her Comoran Strike novels under the Robert Galbraith pen name, they are so good! 7y
TheWildCard I really liked this one. I grew up in a small town, and Rowling gets the small town politics exactly right. It‘s disturbing, but very realistic. 7y
lyradora Yeah, I read the Cormoran Strike books, and enjoyed those. But I love mysteries and I *rarely* read non genre fiction, so Rowling's few literary fiction books just don't interest me. 7y
kelecoo I hated this one. So dreary and not worth my time. Felt like JKR tried to overcompensate and show how adult she could write and instead just wrote the most depressing book ever. Her Cormoran Strike books are excellent as others have said. 7y
BibliophileLife This one was a little hard for me to get through. I read it in between other books. Not bad just not what I wanted from her that‘s all. 7y
hanseatic @BookaholicNatty i absolutely loved it. It's brilliantly written, dark and realistic. 7y

Pickpick

Thoroughly enjoyed this book for its host of well crafted characters and clever telling of their interconnections. Turned out to be a modern tragic tale. I had this book on my shelf since it was published and never read it. I‘m glad I finally did. JKs writing is so engaging.

When you just want to get a birthday card but you can't leave the bookstore without buying a book... Couldn't resist the pretty cover. 😍 #bookwormproblems 📖

This book has been on my #tbr for, like, forever and I'm pretty keen to see if I'll like it since I've seen so many mixed reactions. Have any of you read it?
