A young dog, Buck, grew up as the favourite pet of a loving family, in California. But his life took a sudden turn when he was sold by a rogue servant and was transported to the Far North. The cold, wild land was cruel and heartless; inhabited by greedy gold prospectors, savage wolves and even more savage Indians. Buck became a sled dog and was subjected to a life of immense hardship. He soon realised that he must return to the law of the wild and learn to survive. Buck turned to the ways of his forefathers, using the cunning, toughness and ferocity that lay dormant in him he became the strongest sled dog in Alaska. But can he overcome the urge to run free of mans rule; the urge to respond to the call of the wild?

When the long winter nights come on and the wolves follow their meat into the lower valleys, he may be seen running at the head of the pack through the pale moonlight or glimmering borealis, leaping gigantic above his fellows, his great throat a-bellow as he sings a song of the younger world, which is the song of the pack.

I listened to The Call of The Wild while waiting for my hold on White Fang to come through. The Call of The Wild didn‘t capture me as much as White Fang, which I read multiple times as a child. The ending of The Call of The Wild felt very rushed and compared to the detailed trips outline Buck‘s voyages through Alaska.

So... this fits a couple two of my prompts for the bingos I have going #AudiobookClassic and #100YearOld book ;) also... the movie is coming out soon :)

This is a super short little audio too (3 hours I think) so I‘ll finish it tomorrow driving to and from work

Bklover I read this decades ago and I remember loving it. 6d
mdm139 My kids and I also just listened to this on audio. It is one of my favorite books. 6d
ElizaMarie @Bklover I want to say I‘ve read this when I was younger but.. now that I‘m listening to it none of it rings a bell. I might have read White Fang and got them mixed up :) (edited) 6d

3 ⭐️ A very well written book but for some reason I just was unable to connect with the book. It could also be that I took a long time to complete the book and that I really didn‘t understand the narrative of the novel. I think if I had read the Wikipedia article on the book, I would have understood it better. #2020 #bookstagram #bookreview #ebook #fiction #classic

Reading something, for the first time, that is so deeply a party of the canon is an interesting mix of discovering something both familiar and completely unexpected at the same time. This was so savage in a way you don‘t see much today. It was heartbreaking at times, but very moving. It really is one of those universal stories. #TBRRead #WinterGames #JingleBallers #booked2019 prompt 23 #publicdomain

This turned out to be an adapted version (no accusation here @Bookwormjillk - it isn't well marked at all!) so it felt very simplistic and choppy. I think I am going to try to read the original version sometime and see if it flows better. This wasn't a cheerful book, but in the wilderness only the strong survive!

TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - it's all good. Although I've never quite understood the point of adaptations. It just seems like kids should read the books when they're old enough to read the actual book. 2mo

Novella told from the perspective of Buck, a family dog who is dog napped and forced to #hitthenorth as a sled dog in the Yukon Territory at the turn of the 20th century. I think London anthropomorphized Buck‘s motivation too much at times but it was otherwise a pretty compelling adventure that doesn‘t shy away from the brutality of the era.

August was a good month! Three of these were rereads: Medium Raw, One Flew Over the Cuckoo‘s Nest, and my only 5-star for the month, The Call of the Wild.

LauraBeth I read The Call Of The Wild and White Fang for Lit in college and loved it so much! I‘ve been wanting to re-visit them and haven‘t done it yet. I credit London with re-igniting my love of reading during a time when all I was reading were textbooks. 5mo

I enjoyed this but at times was very put off by the treatment of the dogs. Getting beyond that the story had a great message and was very interesting being told by the dog‘s point of view. I know Max would 100% not make it in the wild lol. 4 🐶🐶🐶🐶

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #reread | During the Klondike Gold Rush, Buck, a St. Bernard mix, was stolen from his California home and sold as a sled dog in Alaska. He‘s then sold several times over enduring many hardships and earning his role of alpha. In this fable-like tale of survival, Buck goes steadily from domesticated to feral. London allegorically permits Buck to exhibit human-like thinking. Dogs and humans could easily be interchanged. It‘s brilliant.

DO NOT go into this book thinking it‘s a heart-warming tale about a puppy who goes camping. Every page has dogs attacking humans, humans attacking dogs, dogs attacking each other… wah! I know there are a lot of clever metaphors and allegories buried in the story, and the place writing is beautiful, but that‘s no comfort to a dog-lover. Thankfully, it‘s short! Book #41: When you think about one of Jack London's Alaskan dog books, you would likely think about White Fang, I assume due to the popularity of the movie a few years ago. However, before White Fang was published, London published the much shorter The Call of the Wild. To start off I must say that this book was fantastic and I highly recommend...

Definitely thankful for this book this Thanksgiving! I couldn‘t have asked for a better atmosphere to finish reading The Call of the Wild by Jack London other than Alaska itself. This morning at 7am I sat outside in the New Mexico mountains.. as I started the last chapter I was surrounded by dogs howling.. it was as if those dogs could hear the same wild call that Buck heard and eventually embraced..
review continues in comments⚠️

BookBumming This is a 5 star read!! I had so many emotions going through this book. But I truly didn‘t want to say goodbye to Buck. He reminds me so much of all the dogs I‘ve had in my life.. As different as they all are from each other, they all are connected by an ancient and wild bond.

What does everyone think of Jack London's "Call of the Wild?" I'm wondering if I should buy it or just check it out from the library... please let me know if you've read it and what you thought of it in the comments!

Day 25 - #booksinthewild #31bookpics

I enjoyed the story very much. I can't believe I never read this before. I loved Jack London's intuitive feeling for animals. This story traces Buck's sudden entry into the wild and his education in survival among the wolves. Jack London's writing is exceptional and makes him one of the greatest American storytellers. If you haven't read this yet, you should as it is a quick, easy and thrilling read.
