A remote lodge in upstate New York is the perfect getaway . . . until the bodies start piling up. It's winter in the Catskills and the weather outside is frightful, but Mitchell's Inn is so delightful! The cozy lodge nestled deep in the woods is perfect for a relaxing--maybe even romantic--weekend away. The Inn boasts spacious old rooms with huge wood-burning fireplaces, a well-stocked wine cellar, and opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just curling up with a book and someone you love. So when the weather takes a turn for the worse, and a blizzard cuts off the electricity--and all contact with the outside world--the guests settle in for the long haul. The power's down but they've got candles, blankets, and wood--a genuine rustic experience! Soon, though, a body turns up--surely an accident. When a second body appears, they start to panic. Then they find a third body. Within the snowed-in paradise, something--or someone--is picking off the guests one by one. They can't leave, and with no cell service, there's no prospect of getting the police in until the weather loosens its icy grip. The weekend getaway has turned deadly. For some couples, it's their first time away. For others, it will be their last. And there's nothing they can do about it but huddle down and hope they can survive the storm.

•••A winter storm is the perfect scenario for a locked-room mystery and this one didn‘t disappoint. Some characters were off-beat but maybe that was a part of their appeal.
•••Hillary Huber is a favorite of mine…but it would‘ve been better with additional narrators.

A wintery weekend getaway gone wrong…very wrong…deathly wrong…Agatha Christie levels of wrong. Another fast-paced read from Lapena, this book feels both suffocating and satisfying! Interesting characters from different backgrounds, and some will die…but hey, some will survive! And I‘m sure said survivors will never go to a quaint mountain hotel again after what they suffer through.

This book was very underwhelming, which is surprising. I‘ve enjoyed every book I‘ve read by Shari Lapena. It was clunky, the narration was juvenile at times and it just wasn‘t that thrilling. I would give this one a hard pass. 😕

I loved the cold wintery setting of this one! And I loved (what I saw as) the combo of The Shining with And Then There Were None. Although there were a lot of characters to introduce, I was able to figure them out pretty quickly and was interested from the start. I wasn‘t sure if there would be a twist at the end (or how that would happen), but there was one and I think it was done well

One of the worst books I ever read. A resort in the Catskills in the middle of winter. Guests arrive. Maybe it‘s because I have lived in Florida most of my life that I can‘t fathom spending a weekend freezing my butt off. Naturally someone dies - an accident? a murder? Do you care? My guess is no. A perfect example of telling and not showing. The dialog was stilted and a couple of things were just ridiculous. Read the phone book instead.

I listened to this audiobook as I deep cleaned my house. I liked it but it wasn‘t phenomenal or mind blowing but it was entertaining. I figured out who the killer was pretty early just how the perspectives were written but it wasn‘t super obvious. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I finished this book awhile ago, but I hesitated to post the review. Maybe it‘s because I‘m torn between pick or so-so? I have to admit, it was a good read and kept me guessing, but I hate when mysteries end with information that the reader could never know. I think the journey was greater than the destination, in this case.

The plot had potential, but I didn‘t care for the writing style. Present tense, frequent shifts in POV with each character, and a lot of straightforward “telling” sentences that didn‘t hold my interest. I don‘t usually mind multiple POVs, but I didn‘t feel like I ever had a grasp of who was who the entire book. Might try another from this author, but this one was not for me.

This was a very cozy mystery. It wasn't at all a bad read, there wasn't anything that was really new and exciting, I felt like I've read this same book quite a bit. But if you're looking for just a nice cozy atmospheric mystery book, this would he a good pick. 3/5

People looking for a weekend getaway have reservations at a remote inn. A winter storm arrives with the guests, it quickly traps them inside, and takes out the power. 🥶 A perfect setting for a murder mystery. 🔎 🧐 This book kept reminding me of an Agatha Christie novel. And the game Clue…it was Ms. Scarlet, in the library, with a knife. 🕵🏻

A group of strangers staying at a quaint hotel in the Catskills become more secluded when a blizzard cuts the power. A classic premise. a guest is discovered dead - at 1st appearing accidental but quickly disproven -as they remain isolated tensions run high, alcohol flows, secrets come out, and another guest is murdered, they start to suspect they are being picked off one by one.

Def a good one for a winter TBR 🥶❄️

Guests are trapped at a remote inn during a blizzard and of course have lost all connection to the outside world when the electricity goes out which is a problem when they quickly realize there is a murderer amongst their group.

Nice build up of intensity and I loved the plot idea. Overall a fun who-dunnit kind of book and a quick read.

I just felt like something was lacking.

Hmmmm... is it just me or has anyone else noticed that there are a lot of books about people being isolated in an environment with a sneaky murderer??? Is this how COVID19 is impacting some authors or I am just being drawn to this theme because of COVID19? With that being said, this was a quick, easy, and highly predictable read. ⭐️⭐️

LiteraryinPA Well, this book came out in 2018, so it wasn‘t written in COVID times. But I bet other authors are being influenced by it!! 4y

People gather at Mitchell's Inn in the Catskills. There is a blizzard brewing outside & bodies are starting to pile up. This book reminded me of And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. There are twists and turns that make it hard to pick the killer. The pages turned quickly as I tried to get to the end. I have read The Couple Next Door and look forward to reading A Stranger in the House soon. Recommended to those who love mystery suspense.

Despite the clunky writing at times, An Unwanted Guest held my attention and was an enjoyable enough read, but the ending was super disappointing. Everything is revealed way too quickly in the last 40 or so pages, and the murderer comes from way out of left field. There were pretty much no clues throughout the story to point to the murderer and their motive is delivered through a big info-dump. The ending bumped my rating from So-So to Pan... 2⭐️
