Crimson Death
Crimson Death | Laurell K Hamilton
In her twenty-fifth adventure, vampire hunter and necromancer Anita Blake learns that evil is in the eye of the beholder... Anita has never seen Damian, her vampire servant, in such a state. The rising sun doesn't usher in the peaceful death that he desperately needs. Instead, he's being bombarded with violent nightmares and blood sweats. And now, with Damian at his most vulnerable, Anita needs him the most. The vampire who created him, who subjected him to centuries of torture, might be losing control, allowing rogue vampires to run wild and break one of their kind's few strict taboos. Some say love is a great motivator, but hatred gets the job done, too. And when Anita joins forces with her friend Edward to stop the carnage, Damian will be at their side, even if it means traveling back to the land where all his nightmares spring from...a place that couldn't be less welcoming to a vampire, an assassin, and a necromancer: Ireland. From the Hardcover edition.

#ScarathlonPhotoChallenge #Day19 #CemeteryGrave I love the Anita Blake books! Though, even in my opinion, they jumped the shark long ago I‘m still addicted. Anita is a zombie raiser/vampire hunter who falls in love with a vampire. But they‘re also monster mysteries & very dark. With lots of sex from Bk6/7.👍 #Scarathlon #SpookyGhostClub 6pts

Well, this #chunkster of 710 pages could've seriously been half that! The first half was decent but yikes for the rest. I'm beginning to remember why I tapped out on this series. Oh well, on to the next. Hopefully there will be a tad more substance with the next one.

5feet.of.fury I remember this one. It took them SO LONG to get to Ireland! The 1st half of the book had no plot 😂 2y
5feet.of.fury That last few are averaging much shorter, and I‘m glad. There was a huge amount of time spent going on about nothing. 2y
PuddleJumper I tapped out after Micah. Couldn't deal with it and it used to be my favourite series as a teenager 🤣 2y
Bookzombie I haven‘t got to this one yet. My next one is Blood Noir but she could tighten them up. 🙂 2y

I do like her books but this one reminded me of why I took a long break from reading this series. Over 70% on characters issues that we have had many books to get to know and very little was left for the plot. I was interested in the Irish storyline and it just felt like that didn‘t really get a proper ending.

This addition to the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series was a THICK ONE. I skipped ahead during a lot of the conversations because she drag an argument out for literally a chapter. Some of the supporting characters are finally coming into their own power and a lot of them are in therapy so the attitudes are not as petty as they used to be. The plot is still interesting after all these books. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

700 pages, and it could have been half that. The actual story was good, but it was bogged down by so much repetition and info that we already know at this point. The next one is about 200 pages shorter, so hopefully that issue is remedied.

#NuYear #day12 #IDieYouDie I was trying to think of books that would fit this prompt when the Anita Blake series came to mind. Anita is a US Marshall who is a zombie-raising, necromancer who hunts vampires & other supernatural creatures that break the law. She‘s also the human servant to StLouis master vampire, Jean-Claude & is the Nimir-Ra to the were leopards & bonded to other weres too, so I‘d say if she died, she‘d drag quite a few with her!

Cathythoughts Love ❤️the title 😳 7y

FINALLY managed to finish this e-book. If Laurell K. Hamilton would cut the book in half, it'd be a pick. Like all Anita Blake novels, it shines when there's action and police procedures. However, LKH spends too much time on relationships, sex, interpersonal politics, and rehashing unimportant details from past books, as well as copious amounts of inane conversation. I've read all of the Anita Blake books, but this may be my last.

OneCent76 I had to stop reading her books a while ago bc there was no real plot. It's a shame too bc her earlier books were really good! 7y
AllenTStClair @OneCent76 To me, they all have a plot....that could unfold in half, a third, or even a fourth of the pages she writes. LKH needs to get an editor. Quick. 😂 7y
OneCent76 Well yes, they all have a plot. Some are just very basic tho. And yes the plots do get lost in all the extra fluff. I agree with the editor suggestion lol 7y

#90sInJuly #day12 #YouDriveMeCrazy Laurell K Hamilton with the way you've taken a brilliant detective who happens to execute vampires & raise zombies on the side, and turned her into a live sex show. It especially drives me crazy that even though it's gotten to the point where it's half story & half excruciatingly detailed porn, I still keep buying them & reading hoping you'll come to your senses.😠

Robothugs 😩 That would drive me crazy, too! Because the first half of what you said sounds incredibly interesting! 7y

#JuneTunz #day25 #ThatJokeIsntFunnyAnymore Honestly, the Anita Blake series jumped the shark over ten books ago! But, damnit, I've invested too much in these books to give up now. Plus, Jean Claude. And Nathaniel. And Micah. Hotness. Much much hotness.🔥🦈🏄🏻

SpeculativeFemale Yes. So true. I read up to Affliction and kind of gave up, but I have a funny feeling I'll go back and check out the newer ones eventually. 7y

Remind me to never listen to Anita Blake books on audio ever again. Everything that gets on my nerves is more pronounced when I listen to it and I find even more things to be irritated about! Plus, the detailed sex makes me feel embarrassed as I drive around--it's like soft porn while I drive to work! And there was definitely not enough Edward in the book.

I miss the action packed books at the beginning of the series.

BillBlume I gave up on this series a long time ago. You're a braver soul to stick with it this long. I've no objection to some good, kinky vampire sex, but I want plot, too. (edited) 8y

I find myself struggling to get through this book. I am tired of the excessive descriptions of clothes, decorations, & everyone's appearances. I feel frustrated with the constant hashing out of the multiple relationship issues. I am thoroughly confused about who is sleeping with who & who is feeding from who. I was so excited that Edward was in this book, but I'm on disc 9 (of 19) & they still haven't made it to Ireland!

#booklove17 #day1 #LoveToHate Laurel.K.Hamilton is a writer I love to hate. I've been reading Anita Blake since the beginning, when it was actually about executions & detective work not sex. I've invested so much time and money into the series, both Anita & Merry Gentry, that I feel almost obligated to buy the next brick of a book, which will undoubtably be 1 part action to 4parts sex. Again. *sigh*

LibrarianRyan I have seen a lot of people say that. I was amazed at the number of guys who stopped reading the books for the over abundance of sex. 8y
the.bookish.valkyrie I'm with you on this one! I was thinking about using her for my #LoveToHate post when I saw yours! Lol, I may still, if I can't think of something else! Btw, the newest brick is about a 60/40 balance, with the majority of the sex and relationship ridiculousness in the first half, the second half is mostly centered on the crime stuff. 8y
IndyHannaJones I used to love her....and then our relationship got weird. At first there was edgy world building and creepy plots and interesting characters and then the sex scenes started....and never really ended. I'm not sure if she wanted the sex to be female empowering but it actually seemed abusive to the males involved and way over the top. 8y

Even though most of this book does not focus on the actual mystery, it worked. Anita has so much to deal with with all of her lovers and marrying Jean-Claude and of course Asher, so I didn't mind. Definitely can't wait for the next book.

I'm not sure who said "write without fear, edit without mercy," but I wish they had applied it to this book! If Hamilton's editors had culled 200 or 300 pages, this could've been a really good book! The first half is fraught with overdone relationship issues. Once they get to Ireland it's much better. I just wish this weren't so bogged down with Anita's superfluous picking apart of everyone's motivation for every damn thing they say or do.

Owlizabeth 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 this book was so frustrating (edited) 8y
the.bookish.valkyrie @Owlizabeth Yes it was! When I realized I was at 400 pages and they hadn't even made it to the plane I had to put it down for a couple weeks before I could wade back in ('cuz I'm not a quitter #BookNerdProblems, lol) no way was I gonna spend that much time getting to the meat of the story and not finish! fantasy Book this thing is massive, like 708 pages of massive. so skip to around page 400 and then read because that is when the story begins or gets there or something. dont take a shot for every mention of therapy or therapist because you'll be dead before you get too far. decent adult situations and we actually have plot with this one. everything after Harlequin has been downhill but this is definitely better. wouldn't throw it as it would hurt

Vexingcircumstance They definitely keep getting more and more bogged down. I like the mysteries and overall plot. The random sex scenes are fine, too. But maybe let's not discuss and debate sex and relationships for 75 pages out of every 100. I don't discuss my own relationship that much. I have dumped guys for trying to debate and discuss things to death. I don't need to read her relationship drama lol. 8y
Ksvz Exactly! But I'll keep reading them. Maybe, because they read like therapy notes, my dysfunctional relationships seem magnificent or I'll use her communication techniques to work on mine. After all if its helping with a poly group of 20 (?), my little life should be simple. Anita's self help book coming soon ... 8y

So, I'll be reading Laurell K Hamilton the rest of the night. #crimsondeath #anitablake #halloween #rainbowdash

thegirlwiththelibrarybag That sounds like risky logic - good luck with your early appointment 8y
Vexingcircumstance Well it's 3AM. My daughter woke up again (as I knew she would) and won't sleep again until 5ish. She has to be at speech therapy at 9am. It takes at least an hour to get just her ready to go. Which means i have to wake her up no later than 730 (takes 30 minutes to get there) and i can't sleep without taking Benedryl or I wake up with my face swollen and a sore throat (something in my bedroom triggering allergies and idk what). 8y
Vexingcircumstance Sooooo I literally have no time to sleep. Especially since once I take the Benedryl I can't wake up for at least three hours without feeling groggy and not functional. @thegirlwiththelibrarybag 8y

I love Anita Blake but this is the first book in the series that I have been very disappointed in. I was excited to see where Damian came from but this book was not well done. The relationship parts of the book were drug out way more than was necessary and it didn't keep me interested while the action was flat and rushed. I felt like there wasn't enough buildup, not much mystery, and very little of the Anita I have come to love. 😥#anitablake

TheNextBook I loved the first five, struggled through the next five and then laid it to rest. Anita Blake is such a strong character but my interest nose dived! At least you made it this far. 8y
MeganAnn @TheNextBook the beginning of the series is my favorite, but I've enjoyed seeing Anita grow and change throughout so I think the later books in the series have their merits for showing that growth. This is the first time I've been really disappointed. I will probably keep reading when the next book comes out in the hopes that it will be better and because Anita has such a place in my heart even when her story isn't perfect. 8y

MeganAnn @TheNextBook she definitely is! I usually reread my favorites in the series every couple of years 😉 8y
Vexingcircumstance So much discussion and debate. Literally feels like for the last few books 75 out of every 100 page is her discussing the minute details of her relationships. Can we please get back to just plot, murder and sex? Pleeeeeease? I've loved the characters arcs and still love most of the characters but I can't handle the debate and discussions dragging on so much. It makes me roll my eyes so much I start getting a headache. 8y

#octphotochallenge #day23 #dumbbutbeautiful If you're after dumb but beautiful, then this series is just chockfull of both. It's hard to pick out one but there's Asher the 700yr old vampire who throws jealous temper tantrums, or Richard the werewolf king who needs to have shit explained to him like he's 3, or what about Cardinale the 309yr old female vampire who starts sulking every time her boyfriend talks to Anita, and wow talking about Anita...

ScarletQuill I'm only on the second book of the Anita series but I'm having that thought about many of the characters as well. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa All the way to book 25...and I think I'm going to have to practice some tough love for myself and stop reading this series. It's so hard to turn off the ongoing soap opera episodes...but I'm not sure if it's actually getting anywhere or just spinning as she works through her personal relationship issues on the page..which although interesting might not be the smartest use of my reading time.....however saying that, I fully reserve the right to 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...Cave at any time, or pick up where I left out if she ever gets things paired down enough to have an actual wedding. Hahaha. It's so hard to quit you Anita Blake! 8y
See All 9 Comments
Lizpixie @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I hear you! It's like she's using the books to promote her polyamorous bdsm lifestyle to her readers. I have nothing against her lifestyle, in fact I have friends who live it, but it's almost like she chanting "one of us, one of us" at us.? 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Lizpixie Yes! I completely understand! I love a good erotic novel as much as anyone, and have absolutely no issues with her real lifestyle or the characters lifestyles, but I sometimes feel like she's using her writing of the characters' issues as a way to work through her own...like her writing is her own personal therapy session were she can admit feelings and issues she has and work through them on the page. And honestly there is... 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ... nothing wrong with that either if it's working for her...and she's making a living at it,so good for her. But sometimes I feel like I'm reading her extended diary entries. 8y
Lizpixie @Riveted_Reader_Melissa yep, you've hit the nail on the head with that. Sometimes I get embarrassed reading the page because it sounds so damn personal! Like I really want to know how her poly orgies go down. I am sooo not a prude, but that doesn't mean I want a blow by blow account if a strangers sex life.😒 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Lizpixie Exactly! It's starting to feel a bit more voyeuristic of her personal life than Anita's life. 8y
Vexingcircumstance I actually assumed it was more the lifestyle that the author wants but maybe it is more accurate. Idk. I love most of the series and the sex doesn't bother me but the last three or so books have had way way way to much discussion about the sex and relationships. When the discussion drags on for more pages than whatever mystery is the center of the book I get bored. 8y

Oh god, this one was 600 pages of Anita's relationships and 100 pages of vamp hunting. LKH needs a new editor. The book would have been 15% shorter if we didn't get a detailed description of Nathaniel's lavender eyes every time Anita looks at him. 😒 Yes, of course I'll keep reading the series because I've been promised an epic goddamn wedding, but Christ reading this felt like slamming my head into a brick wall.

BarbaraTheBibliophage That is exactly what I thought you'd say. She has turned the whole series into a trope of itself. 8y

Finished this brick of a book today, it's the largest Anita Blake book yet. It was an alright read, it's nowhere near as good as the first books, but then again, it's not as bad as some. You really have to be a fan if you want to read this, if you're new to Anita I recommend starting at the beginning, Guilty Pleasures. It's hard to rate this, it's just better than a so-so but definitely not a pick either.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I'm actually more of a Micah girl, but Jean-Claude is swoon worthy! 8y
