Evvie Drake Starts Over
Evvie Drake Starts Over | Linda Holmes
From the host of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast comes a heartfelt debut about the unlikely relationship between a young woman who's lost her husband and a major league pitcher who's lost his game. "Charming, hopeful, and gently romantic . . . Evvie Drake is great company." --Rainbow Rowell, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Eleanor & Park In a small town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth "Evvie" Drake rarely leaves her house. Everyone in town, including her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and she doesn't correct them. In New York, Dean Tenney, former major-league pitcher and Andy's childhood friend, is struggling with a case of the "yips": he can't throw straight anymore, and he can't figure out why. An invitation from Andy to stay in Maine for a few months seems like the perfect chance to hit the reset button. When Dean moves into an apartment at the back of Evvie's house, the two make a deal: Dean won't ask about Evvie's late husband, and Evvie won't ask about Dean's baseball career. Rules, though, have a funny way of being broken--and what starts as an unexpected friendship soon turns into something more. But before they can find out what might lie ahead, they'll have to wrestle a few demons: the bonds they've broken, the plans they've changed, and the secrets they've kept. They'll need a lot of help, but in life, as in baseball, there's always a chance--right up until the last out.

The picture is a poster I remember being really helpful to me as a kid. Had to search for it today to help my own kid find words to explain his feelings. Not perfect, but helped a little. Parenting is hard.

Anyway, it also reminded me of the book that I‘m listening to right now. Two complicated people at turning points who are trying to figure themselves out. I‘m enjoying it so far!

Evvie Drake isn't the typical romance/romcom. This story has complex characters, sheds light on emotional abuse and covers different perspectives of starting over in your 30s. I enjoyed the depth of the book, I could really feel for the characters at times.

I didn't love the narrator but I got used to her and tried to not let her take away from the story. I would reccomend the paper version over the audio to anyone else.

I don‘t usually read romance, mostly because I can‘t stand the tropes, but these two seemed like light reads. I thought Nina Hill was cute but the romance aspect was annoying to me. I really liked Evvie Drake because it was light and cute but also dealt with loss in a very realistic way but I did laugh a lot too. Also the women in this book were mature and confident in a way I really appreciated. I highly recommend Evvie Drake.

Prairiegirl_reading Also both are closed door which I appreciated. 2w
ljuliel Finally ! I found someone who thinks like I do about romance. Keep it in the bedroom and shut the door. Ruins a perfectly good book otherwise. 1w

First book finished in the new year! (though I wanted to finish it yesterday). This book had all the trappings of the sort of story I should love, and yet I didn‘t really connect with the characters all that much. I wanted more of something. Humor. Tension. I don‘t know. I also found the inconsistent alternating narrations a bit off putting, like I don‘t really know whose story the writer was telling.

Crazeedi Happy 2020!!🎉💖 3w

This was a New England based romantic comedy for grown folks! The hero gives off strong Tom Selleck vibes and it's a nice slow burn of a story.

How cute! I don‘t typically read books in the romance genre, but this one was mostly a charming story about a woman moving on with her life after an upsetting life event, and only secondarily a romance story. I liked the characters‘ quick, witty dialogue and the descriptions of Maine. It was definitely a fast read and a feel good story. I enjoyed it and read it in less than 24 hours!

Yikes... it has been quite a while since my last post. I took an unplanned break from reading as I've been having a bit of a rough time with migraines and chronic headaches lately, but I've finally finished this lovely comfort read! It's like a warm hug of a book. I really enjoyed spending time with Evvie. A definite pick that has me excited to get back to my tbr list! I hope everyone's Christmas involves some great reads!

*sigh* I really wanted to like this book. Unfortunately for me, the premise upon which the entire storyline is based just didn‘t resonate with me. That being said, I enjoyed most of the middle or I would have bailed out completely. The ending is predictable, but that‘s what you sign up for with a rom com. Bottom line, when the premise of the story is a head shaker for me, it is pretty tough to end up with a final reaction other than “meh.”

I love Linda Holmes on Pop Culture Happy hour and thought it was so great that she wrote a book! This is a romance but it differs from a lot of them in some noticeable ways. There‘s pretty much no “male gaze” at all.I loved watching Evvie “find herself”. I loved her courage. I loved that a lot of her journey she had to do alone. I liked this book a lot and I was so happy I did. I cried, happy tears, and it‘s a rare book that gets me to that place.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars

I really loved this. So cute and put a smile on my face all throughout. It felt over about halfway in, and then it dragged a teeny bit through the middle, but not necessarily in a bad way (I enjoyed every bit of it). So many books try to rush a relationship, and this one takes the time to explore. This was the perfect book about two people who are figuring out their new lives and what comes next. Oh, and love. ❤️

An interesting but predictable romance. Evvie is leaving her husband when she learns he has died in a car accident. Two years later, she has no idea what to do with her life. Enter sexy Major League Baseball pitcher suffering from the yips. I enjoy reading these kinds of books once in a while, but I found several details of this one unbelievable.

marleed I liked this story quite a bit but the one thing that really bugged me still sits with me months later. I felt like it created a litmus test for life insurance. As in you should be blissfully in love with your spouse at the time of their death in order to receive insurance. It didn‘t belong in the story - ins is more about the business of being married and not the amount love sustained in marriage. 3mo
thebluestocking @marleed Yes! This was one of the things that strained credulity for me. And combine that with the fact that she apparently never really worked consistently afterwards. It didn‘t make sense. How was she surviving? I was frustrated that the unimportant details like that got in the way of the story. 3mo
marleed I just think it‘s a destructive notion to advance... that if in your marriage where insurance premiums are being paid the honorable thing is to donate those funds to charity when you know in your heart you didn‘t love enough - whatever enough is. Oh yeah, let‘s just add that to the grieving process. 3mo
Redwritinghood @marleed @thebluestocking I‘m almost finished with this one on audiobook and I keep thinking she should take the money as compensation for putting up with that awful husband for so many years. 3mo
marleed @Redwritinghood Haha. As a widow myself, I just felt really weird about how that was handled. It made me wonder if the author had any real world experience about it - I would guess not. 3mo

What a beautiful, clever, and fulfilling story! I loved the many different pictures of loss, the processing of grief, and the new chances and opportunities. Though these can be heavy subjects, the story was still light, with hope and humor, but not undignified. This was my favorite type of contemporary read - good relational dynamics and growth (with the bonus of a fascinating premise and humor on the side). Will add to my favorites!

What to say about Evvie Drake? I kept thinking while reading this how human Evvie is - she‘s flawed and complicated, and there were times I could totally relate to her. The middle of this book is the slowest part. I liked this one. My #Newin2019 for #Booked2019 and my #Newin20192020 for #GrowUp #BBRC .

An easy-peasy (that‘s a technical term, obviously) read. 😀 A widow who feels guilty for not mourning the loss of her husband and a major league pitcher who has the yips (a truly technical term). A gentle romance novel with no big surprises but it was a welcome pause in my reading journey.

Y‘all, I thought this was gonna be one of THE books. Over the first 80 pages or so, Holmes nails my favourite blend of hilarity and heartbreak. I snickered and I cried and I rejoiced.

Unfortunately, the story loses some steam along the way. It‘s still good, but it also struggles to decide what it is. Litfic? Romance? Chick lit? Probably, it‘s General Fiction in the truest sense.

I did cry over the last 20 pages, though, and I rec it overall.

It‘s slightly warmer today (ie, it hit 12 instead of hovering in the 2-8 range), and apparently that‘s made my tastebuds want beer. Okay, then.

I‘m hoping I can sink into this book tonight. It SEEMS like I‘m back in the right mood to enjoy contemporary, provided I alternate between that and secondary world fantasy.

A little underwhelming, if I'm being honest. Though a bit of that could probably be attributed to a busy week and scarce time to read, I was just bored. Could be a good pick for folks who enjoy romance of the PG "closed door" variety though!

Done with the conference and enjoying a few extra days in the Orlando sun. Got some reading in at the Volcano Bay water park yesterday, but I haven't really connected with this book or the characters yet so it's feeling like a bit of a slog. This one did not live up to my high expectations. The chemistry between Evvie and Dean seemed forced. Also, I didn't really warm up to Evvie's character. Even the setting was a bit dull and that's surprising since I love books that take place in little towns. I did enjoy reading about the relationship between Evvie and Andy. Sadly, Evvie had more chemistry with Andy than she did with Dean. 😐

A young widow in a small Maine town bonds with a former baseball player who rents out her spare room when he needs to get away for a while. They agree not to talk about the things bothering them (her late husband, not what he seemed; his baseball career, which is not ready to leave behind), which of course means that‘s all they talk about. A sweet and witty romance.

Mailing this one off to a #bookcrosser and forgot to take a picture before I packaged it 🤦🏻‍♀️.

I enjoyed this even though romance (and especially contemporary) isn‘t really my first choice anymore. It‘s mostly light & fluffy with enough real-ness to the characters to make it enjoyable. Evvie is dealing with the death of her husband and Dean is coming to grips with the fact that he can‘t pitch. Together they try to figure out how to move on.

Small library haul this week. I requested the tagged book due to Litsy, and hey! It arrived on the day I admitted to myself I‘m not really in the mood for realistic contemporaries right now! How‘s that for timing?

I‘ve got it for three weeks. Hopefully I‘ll slide back into the mood before I‘ve gotta return it.

The others are because I miss superhero comics after weeks of creeping through PRINCESS JELLYFISH. Contemporaries, bro.

I loved the humor in Evvie Drake. There were so many laugh-out-loud lines that the essence of this book reminded me a bit of Eleanor Oliphant. The story slowed down a few times, but I was always rooting for the romance and the characters' success. The sweetness of the story pushed me to the end. It's a feel-good read, even though it touches on some more difficult subjects, and it was the perfect close-out to summer reading.

I absolutely loved this book. Quick romance that is actually quite realistic. It‘s not instalove. Relationships change, broken people try to work through their issues, friendships change, people move on, drift apart, come together. Nothing stays the same and this book really draws on that. I felt it was quite realistic in the portrayal of our interactions with others as we navigate through this crazy life. Also, Dean is #boyfriendgoals.
