There Will Come a Darkness
There Will Come a Darkness | Katy Rose Pool
Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows meets Kristin Cashore's Graceling, with a dash of Winter is Coming, in this showstopping debut YA fantasy! "I dare you not to fall madly in love with these characters. Laura Sebastian, New York Times bestselling author of Ash Princess The Age of Darkness approaches. Five lives stand in its way. Who will stop it . . . or unleash it? For generations, the Seven Prophets guided humanity. Using their visions of the future, they ended wars and united nationsuntil the day, one hundred years ago, when the Prophets disappeared. All they left behind was one final, secret prophecy, foretelling an Age of Darkness and the birth of a new Prophet who could be the worlds salvation . . . or the cause of its destruction. As chaos takes hold, five souls are set on a collision course: A prince exiled from his kingdom. A ruthless killer known as the Pale Hand. A once-faithful leader torn between his duty and his heart. A reckless gambler with the power to find anything or anyone. And a dying girl on the verge of giving up. One of themor all of themcould break the world. Will they be savior or destroyer? Perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, Children of Blood and Bone, and An Ember in the Ashes.

This fantasy was exciting and dark. Skilfully used foreshadowing built up pressure. I didn't see some twists coming.

The narrative was fast paced, with vivid details, neatlessly told from several POVs. A prophecy and an imminent end of the world affects the lives of all the characters and I suffered with them.

There is no classic hero or heroine in the story, that would be too easy.

I missed funny moments. But the title predicted also darkness.

I liked characters, there was even one character that was really intriguing with grey morality! This had a bit exotic atmosphere and I really liked it.

Plot wasn't the most unique but it was okay. There were some nice twists as well. I don't know if story was too average or if I didn't love the characters enough but at some point I just noticed how I didn't really care what was going to happen next.

Has anyone read this YA fantasy who hasn‘t posted a review here?

The reviews posted here are very mixed, it has 4.5⭐️ on Amazon (250 ratings) and is on US Kindle sale today. Trying to decide whether it‘s worth it. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

TIA

megnews Sorry I haven‘t. 3y

#85 of my year. Listening to Falling in Reverse by Eden🌻

Caffeinated_Reader I‘m not sure how I feel about the ending. The journey getting there was slow paced and full of adventure but what it all lead to wasn‘t what I thought it would be. The whole thing was so much uncertainty and confusion, I felt bad for the characters lol Going on a mission that was vague and no one knew exactly what was supposed to happen. 4y
Caffeinated_Reader They were all so young too so it was hard to imagine the fate of the world resting in what a bunch of teenagers decided and figured out. Idk 4y

#bookspinbonanza 1/20

I've been dying to read this since I picked it up but it just wasn't holding my attention. Guess May is my month 😊

I enjoyed this. The way the characters and the prophesy play together works well and the different POV's (all 5 of them!) were a lot easier to follow than I thought they would be. Not a lot of world building but I don't think it's necessary. I'll definitely pick up the next one!

Up to 6hrs 19min! I really wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, I guessed all the big “reveals” within the first 200 pages or so. They were just so very obvious and the book thought it was so very clever, but it just made it so very boring. Will I read the sequel? Yes, because I want to know what happens. Am I happy about that? Not really.

Fairly well developed plot, original and interesting world building, and intriguing characters.

Unfortunately the writing was a tad dry and the book lacked atmosphere, so the world building wasn‘t as vivid and the characters fell a tad flat and distant, despite the creativity that went into crafting each one of them and how they fit within the world and with each other.

Still an interesting storyline and I‘m hopeful for the next book.

3.5 / 5 ⭐ I enjoyed this book although I was more interested in some characters' stories than others. Chapters following characters I was less invested in dragged for me. But I really enjoyed the way it came together in the end and am lookjng forward to the next book. Also got slight 'Six of Crows' vibes initially, which helped draw me in because I love that series.

Now is this book mindbogglingly unique and blew me out of the water? No but it's a solid YA fantasy and I'm rather impressed this is a debut. I think the characters can be more fleshed out (and I assume this will come in the series) but I had no issue keeping them all separate. I liked that they all had their own stories which began braiding together. The conclusion seemed very epic and cinematic to me and I am so excited for the sequel

Bailedbailed

75% through this book, and I‘m bailing on it. The characters just keeping pissing me off by doing the dumbest things. We‘re talking out-of-character things. It‘s all the more frustrating because I love the diversity. I also like the setting, the backstories, and Pool‘s writing style. I just can‘t with these characters.

I‘m 3/4 of the way through this book, & I‘m close to bailing. All the guys in this book are idiots. Jude‘s decision to throw his lot into Anton‘s card game to bail on his duties as Keeper and chase Hector makes no sense whatsoever. 🙄 This is clearly plot moving character, and if it‘s not, then Jude deserves to be a failure. This is the advantage to audiobooks, because I can roll my eyes repeatedly without losing pace.

Been listening to this on audiobook. The buzz has been deafening for TWCAD, but while I‘m more than halfway through it, it isn‘t lighting my fire. Technically, it does all it should & does it well. I think I‘m just burned out on traditional, epic fantasy. I‘d enjoy the book more if it focused more on Ephyra & Anton. Jude constantly giving Hector a pass because he‘s crushing on him is getting real old and makes it difficult to like either of them.
