Nightmares! | Jason Segel, Kirsten Miller
"Coraline meets Monsters, Inc. in this delightfully entertaining offering from actor [Jason] Segel and co-author [Kirsten] Miller."Publishers WeeklyThe hilariously frightening, middle-grade novel Nightmares! is a Texas Bluebonnet nominee and the first book in a trilogy about a boy named Charlie and a group of kids who must face their fears to save their town. Sleeping has never been so scary. And now waking up is even worse!Charlie Laird has several problems. 1. His dad married a woman he is sure moonlights as a witch.2. He had to move into her purple mansion, which is NOT a place you want to find yourself after dark.3.He cant remember the last time sleeping wasnt a nightmarish prospect. Like even a nap. What Charlie doesnt know is that his problems are about to get a whole lot more real. Nightmares can ruin a good nights sleep, but when they start slipping out of your dreams and into the waking worldthats a line that should never be crossed. And when your worst nightmares start to come true . . . well, thats something only Charlie can face. And hes going to need all the help he can get, or it might just be lights-out for Charlie Laird. For good.Praise for Nightmares!Book one is a New York Times bestseller and Texas Bluebonnet nominee!"Charlie Laird, who learns fear will eat you alive if you feed it, makes an impression, and...readers will want to accompany him again."The New York Times Book Review"A touching comical saga...about facing things that go bump in the night."US Weekly"[Nightmares!] succeeds at scaring and amusing in equal measure[It's] sweet, charming, and imaginative."Kirkus Reviews"Segel...and Miller build an entertaining, cartoony world full of scary (but not too scary) monsters, silly jokes, plucky kid heroes...with a promise of adventures to come."Booklist "An engaging and creative story...woven with a generous amount [of] humor."VOYA"There's humor and a fairly high ick-factor."School Library Journal"Cleverly crafted...This novel presents just the right mix of 'scary and humorous.'"ILA Literacy DailyFrom the Hardcover edition.

When I was working in a big box bookstore it felt like every day some celebrity came out with a children‘s book and most were pure crap. Ever since then I‘ve stayed away from celebrity authors but this one has piqued my interest.

I was gifted this book for a Blind-date-with a book swap.

Although I would have most likely not chosen this book myself (as it's middle grade), I'm glad my match chose it because it's quite good! It's a well written and paced adventure with underlying themes for adults. The storyline is unique. I might even read the second book.

Twainy Sometimes a middle grade book is a nice change of pace from the heavy reading I‘m normally doing. Adding to stack. 4y

Disclaimer: I am a big fan of Jason Segel. This book was so much fun. Middle grade horror with a comic twist that only he could pull off. The audiobook had me laughing out loud quite a bit because he reads the book in a million different voices and it is SO entertaining. I loved this! 5⭐️
Charlie moves with his brother and dad into a big purple mansion owned by his new stepmom and he‘s pretty sure she‘s a witch. His nightmares are getting worse...

This was a really entertaining book about a boy, Charlie learning how to face his nightmares in a literal nightmare realm with goblins, killer clowns, Medusa, her son Meduso & the President of Nightmares (who is also his real principal). The feel of the story reminded me of the old Beetlejuice cartoon 🖤

LOVED this!!! Charlie is convinced his stepmom is a witch and thinks she's haunting his dreams. Nightmares are scary only until you face your fears, though, and Charlie gets a whole crew to help out! #BBRC #WrittenByAnActor @LibrarianRyan #middlegrade

Hey all,

Just a remainder that there is still time to sign up for the #NightmareSwap. This is a fun Halloween swap for all ages. Nightmares don't have to be horror or scary (my recurring nightmare is being a member of the Scooby Gang, and I love Scooby Doo).

This is a blind swap, and you will only be matched in county.

https://forms.gle/7qEmVHVVofp8X8i18

Signups open until the 14th, open Halloween

dainarmb May I ask- what is the swap exactly? Scary stories, your own personal nightmares, depends on your match's taste? Will most likely sign up but want to be sure what I'm getting myself into 😂😅 5y
LibrarianRyan @dainarmb I say general Halloween maybe a little creepy, but more geared to your matchs taste. I tied to ask quite a few questions like movie monsters, gore, etc. 5y
LibrarianRyan @dainarmb While I don't know what books my match will get yet, I do know the items because they are kind of universal. 5y

For today's #monstermadness2017 the prompt is #Dracula. I hereby nominate the Principle of the school in Nightmares. Turns out he is also the president of the nightmare world. Dracula was proud, primal, and predatory, and so is the President.

4⭐️ What a great fun read! Charlie is convinced his stepmother is a witch biding her time until she can cook up his little brother and sell him bits and pieces in her herbatorium. The book is full of wonderful imaginary and fanciful illustrations that keep the setting of the book. This makes a nice book for any age, and would work well as a read-aloud as well. Now time to scare up book 2.

This middle grade took awhile for me to get into. The first half reminded me of HP5: The Year of Umbridge and Angst. But the second half was filled with interesting characters that gave Jason Segel a chance to show off an impressive range of voices. Though I kept feeling like he'd written and performed it as a grownup Nick from Freaks & Geeks 😂 #mommyreads #audiobook #middlegrade

1. This is my very sick nephew Jaxon at about 2 years, maybe a year and a half (he's 8 now). We are at moms house. It used to be, when ever my nephews were too sick to be in day care and it was going to more than a day illness, they would get to spend the week with grams, grump, and aunt RyRy since we all had vacay time.
2. I would recommend Starflight by Landers

I decided to read something different and stumbled on this book co-written by Jason Segel. I'm a fan, but wasn't sure what to expect. This actually turned out to be a really fun story with some serious undertones. The lesson is immediately obvious, but when I was "middle grade" I would have loved this.

If you can, get the audiobook. Jason reads it, and you can tell he's having a blast doing the many voices --and even some sound effects.

This book ignites the imaginative spark of a child's dream world, or nightmare world to be exact. The creatures are strange and intriguing. The main character and his group of friends and family are charming. It beautifully addresses dealing with loss and difficult changes as a child. Even as an adult reader I appreciated it's story. An excellent share from my friend, @AbbieCanRead . I look forward to the next in the series.
