The Adventures of Oliver Twist
The Adventures of Oliver Twist | Charles Dickens
At the heart of Charles Dickens's second novel, first published in 1838, is a story as much about crime and poverty as it is about justice and charity. Orphaned at birth, Oliver Twist grows up under the loveless, relentless watch of a workhouse. He runs away with hopes for a better life in London, only to become--at the hands of the unforgettable Artful Dodger--a guileless pawn in a gang of pickpockets and robbers working for Fagin, one of Dickens's most controversial villains. Full of ingenious plot twists, at turns thrilling, tragic, tender, and sharp-eyed, The Adventures of Oliver Twist is among Dickens's most enduring classics. This would be a great tale of sadness and triumph, well-written and interesting in details of a historic nature, except it feels as if we are traveling back to this time of inhumanity towards the poor and vulnerable.

Finally finishing this very long audiobook! It is one of Dickens earlier novels and is more heavy handed (imo) than later novels. Its easy to see that Dickens is playing with reader emotions to create sympathy for social justice issues that were important to him - but this does lead to some two dimensional characters. And of course the appalling caricature of Fagin, embellishing an existing anti semitism. ⬇️

Centique The depiction of the darker side of London and the plight of the poor remains eye opening and fascinating - and, as always, Dickens creates so many colourful secondary characters that are entertaining and unforgettable. 12mo
Ruthiella I agree, it‘s very heavy handed. I love Dickens‘ completed novels, but this one is lower on the list for that reason. 12mo
Centique @Ruthiella yes! Great Expectations and Bleak House remain my favourites… and probably David Copperfield too. 12mo
See All 10 Comments
Ruthiella Great Expectations and Bleak House are at the top of my list too. For some reason I don‘t love David Copperfield, however. Or rather I think I don‘t like him as an adult. I do love all the side characters, however. “The donkeys Janet!” 😂 (edited) 12mo
Centique @Ruthiella i had to add David Copperfield solely for my love of Miss Betsey and Mr Dick and his never ending memoir that he is trying to write. And you reminded me about the blasted donkey! 😂😂 12mo
Lcsmcat This was my first Dickens and sparked a life-long appreciation of his writing. I was 8, so I didn‘t “get” everything. But I loved his humor, and totally fell in love with little Oliver! 12mo
Centique @Lcsmcat how amazing that you read this at 8! I was probably about that age when i read A Christmas Carol but thats a much easier read. (Probably a condensed version as well) So wonderful to discover his colorful characters when youre young and your mind is wide open and impressionable. Which is your favourite Dickens so far? 12mo
Lcsmcat @Centique A bit like being asked to name your favorite child. 😀 David Copperfield is up there now because I recently reread it before reading Demon Copperhead. Tale of Two Cities will always have a place in my romantic heart, and Pickwick Papers are such fun. I guess it varies with my mood. 12mo
batsy I've been trying to get over my Dickens resistance. It's partly because I've read this twice for school and yes, it's flawed in all the ways you've mentioned. I'm also not a fan of GE. But I do love A Christmas Carol. I read abridged versions of DC and Two Cities as a kid and perhaps I should start with those now. 12mo
Centique @batsy i can understand the resistance! He may not be your cup of tea ultimately - because i know its not the length of his novels - you read the Russians after all! Yes maybe DC or Two Cities - although its been twenty years since i read Two Cities…. 😂 12mo

Audiowalking with Oliver Twist over the weekend. This neighbourhood is a lot older than mine so I was enjoying the different architecture and trees.
This is about my 8th Dickens novel I think, up to chapter 7 and my god there‘s not a glimmer of hope to be found for poor Oliver Twist. I knew it would be sad, but 😫😫😫 Suits the chilly weather though!

Martin Jarvis is a marvellous narrator of Dickens. Well, really of anything.
The well-known story of Oliver is heart-wrenching really. Dickens shows such sympathy for the plight of women and children in his time. Women, in particular, are shown to have so few real choices and to be mostly subjected to the will of men. Poor Nancy. And Dick. I do have a soft spot for the artful dodger though, due to Jack Wild‘s performance.

charl08 Love Martin Jarvis. My favourite is his Just William narrations. 1y

I loved the themes throughout the book, particularly those of generosity & kindness. I thought the plot made sense, & didn‘t seem too far-fetched, but was still filled with hardships. Similarly, Dickens‘ writing made the novel truly stand out. While I can see how some readers might find it a little slow, I think the writing made up for the slower pace. I was very pleasantly surprised by Oliver Twist, and I‘m hoping to read more by Dickens soon!

Among other public buildings in a certain town, which for many reasons it will be prudent to refrain from mentioning, and to which I will assign no fictitious name, there is one anciently common to most towns, great or small: to wit, a workhouse; and in this workhouse was born; on a day and date which I need not trouble myself to repeat, inasmuch as it can be of no possible consequence to the reader, in this stage of the business at all events; 💓

This somehow got really confusing about 3/4 of the way in; there are some melodramatic intricacies that seemed to come out of nowhere. But I read ahead in Serial Reader to finish this and found the rest of it a digestible read, so a Pick it is.

No guesses here. It‘s a pick! Great story wonderfully told. Most people know the story so I‘ll say as Dickens‘s second novel, his style is clearly evident, satire, humour, exaggeration, and of course caricature.

Away they run, pell-mell, helter-skelter, slap-dash,… rousing up the dogs… Away they fly, splashing through the mud,… up go the windows, out run the people, onward bear the mob,… There is a passion for hunting something deeply implanted in the human breast.

And that is how you write a chase scene!

I‘m enjoying this reading, but Charles was this absolutely necessary? One must remember how much of the world despised the Irish at one time and make sure as a people we must always stand on the side of the oppressed. 🇮🇪 #shouldertoshoulder

Butterfinger I like that tag. That is powerful. 4y
Cuilin @Milara that was my point! Absolutely we should be more concerned, I was highlighting this to say that “those who don‘t know history are destined to repeat it” I would hate to see Irish people being xenophobic without having a clue to their own history. I‘ll still read Dickens it was a good line to set me thinking about all this. I don‘t regard that as wasted energy if it motivates one to think. 4y
Cuilin @Milara yes. I like that. We cannot hold the past to our standards and we should learn from their mistakes. As Maya Angelou said “when you know better, do better” That‘s all we can do. Read, learn, improve, repeat. 4y

Mission Dickens underway! I finished OT early this morning. It‘s probably my least favorite novel by Dickens, but it‘s Dickens so it‘s still better than everything else. This was his first novel after The Pickwick Papers, and it shows. The characters are even more like caricatures than those in Nicholas Nickleby and The Old Curiosity Shop. The graphic depictions of poverty and violence make this a must-read. On to Martin Chuzzlewit next!

MemoirsForMe I‘m reading The Man Who Invented Christmas. Lots of fascinating trivia about Mr. D. 5y

I‘ve not felt well the past few days and the extreme aching started this morning. It‘s still near impossible to get tested in Indiana even for healthcare workers. While I‘m self-quarantined I‘ve resumed reading some Dickens novels that I‘ve started over the years. Most recently I left off reading Oliver Twist. Hopefully, I‘ll survive to finish Martin Chuzzlewit and Little Dorrit.
