A thrilling tale of secretaries turned spies, of love and duty, and of sacrifice--inspired by the true story of the CIA plot to infiltrate the hearts and minds of Soviet Russia, not with propaganda, but with the greatest love story of the twentieth century: Doctor Zhivago. At the height of the Cold War, two secretaries are pulled out of the typing pool at the CIA and given the assignment of a lifetime. Their mission: to smuggle Doctor Zhivago out of the USSR, where no one dare publish it, and help Pasternak's magnum opus make its way into print around the world. Glamorous and sophisticated Sally Forrester is a seasoned spy who has honed her gift for deceit all over the world--using her magnetism and charm to pry secrets out of powerful men. Irina is a complete novice, and under Sally's tutelage quickly learns how to blend in, make drops, and invisibly ferry classified documents. The Secrets We Kept combines a legendary literary love story--the decades-long affair between Pasternak and his mistress and muse, Olga Ivinskaya, who was sent to the Gulag and inspired Zhivago's heroine, Lara--with a narrative about two women empowered to lead lives of extraordinary intrigue and risk. From Pasternak's country estate outside Moscow to the brutalities of the Gulag, from Washington, D.C. to Paris and Milan, The Secrets We Kept captures a watershed moment in the history of literature--told with soaring emotional intensity and captivating historical detail. And at the center of this unforgettable debut is the powerful belief that a piece of art can change the world.

The Russian snack cake brownie was our families favorite snack from the box. It was better than a ding dong from Little Debbie. It had a layer of chocolate cream instead of vanilla and no harder chocolate shell around it, but it was really good. And I love how my Russian book cover designs look like Doctor Zhivago covers. #foodandlit @Texreader @Butterfinger

Literature as Cold War weapon: fictional treatment of C.I.A. campaign to get Boris Pasternak‘s “Doctor Zhivago” distributed in Soviet Union. Narration shifts between romance of Boris & Olga, spies Irina & Sally‘s forbidden love affair, even typing pool gets narrative chapters, like a chorus. Research sometimes shows at the surface, not immersive. Some predictable plotting, prologue=strongest writing. Shifting identities, secrets, lies & love. 2019

Okay so, I love historical fiction about women in war time, especially when it brings in reality. I am so excited that this book mentions Virginia Hall. I‘ve been reading A Woman of No Importance (non fiction about Virginia) and just too happy to see her mentioned here! 😌

I had to rush through this one as my library borrow was expiring, so perhaps that's why I didn't love this one. I was into it at first and loved the typists, but I was less interested in the other stories. And it felt a bit long. But I mostly enjoyed it!

4⭐️ I really enjoyed this book. I had heard quite a bit about this book last year but didn‘t get around to it. I liked the back and forth and how the author concentrated on the female characters and the description of the world that the author created. I really enjoyed this book with the different narratives. The typists were definitely my favorite. It was refreshing to read a book that‘s actually after WWII and about the Cold War. I don‘t usually come across those. I will say, things dragged a little for me just before the ending as they all heaped praises on Doctor Zhivago. This may be a controversial opinion but I‘m not fond of Russian classics 🤷🏻‍♀️ they just go on forever 🤦🏻‍♀️

I remember being swept up in the drama of Doctor Zhivago when I read it many years ago but I knew nothing of the equally fascinating story of its publication. Prescott‘s behind the scenes look at this incredible journey involves espionage, imprisonment and the 1958 World‘s Fair. Super interesting, now I‘m going to go spend way too much time Googling more about this!

The female typists of the Cold War often played much more important roles, and those are here alongside the story of the publication of Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago, and the surrounding intrigue. This was a far more complex read than I expected but very interesting and well-researched.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. It was a little all over the place for me and I had a hard time keeping up with the flow. I‘m also not a huge history person so it just didn‘t hit home for me. I do like the idea behind the book and love stories about spies but I feel like large portions of the book were boring to me and I had a hard time keeping my attention on what I read.

marleed Haha. I had the same feelings but for opposite reasons. I was fascinated by the history of it but did speed reading though the American spy love story. Isn‘t that a hoot!? 4y

Been repotting & rearranging house plants for winter. Great Audiobook. Multiple narrators so it was easy to realize you had switched character viewpoint. Spies with Literary twist. I vaguely remember struggling through Dr Zhivago as a teenager, probably after watching the movie. Didn't know any of its publication history, so I found Cold War drama of that fascinating. And I want the dress on cover. 👗

Crinoline_Laphroaig @Lynnsoprano Here in Oklahoma we always have that one cold snap so you have to bring everything in. Then it warms up again. But it's starting to cool back down. I need to clean out my herb bed for fall. Summer herbs are gone but Rosemary, Sage, and Lavender look good all winter unless we have bitterly cold winter. Then after that time to plant bulbs. Lots of audiobook time! 4y

Women typists at the CIA, female spies, and the author of Doctor Zhivago, this book weaves a thread between the three. There are a lot of different points of view and except for the collective voice of the typing pool, they do not sound very different. It‘s hard to keep track of who is speaking and they all have about the same tone. I found myself wishing this one would end faster. I would‘ve preferred a book on just one of the three plots.

Just ok. Great cast narration on audiobook. But the story had about 6 too many plot lines. And, it didn‘t feel like authentic dialogue - did folks in 1958 use air quotes? Call them that? Entertaining, though.

I enjoyed the Pasternak and Ola storyline and the US involvement in the publication of Dr. Zhivago. I was also intrigued by the roles women played in the early intelligence wars, from typist to spy, but I didn‘t think the character development worked very well in that part of the storyline. Nevertheless a bit of a treat for me to read. Picture is just the day‘s harvest to go with the day‘s reading. #hellosunshine

Great read, now I feel like I have to read Dr. Zhivago! Loved this story about how the writing of this classic was used to fish out the workings of the USSR, the oppression of writers and others, the spies who watched and worked through lives and loves. This was a great historical fiction. I was immediately enthralled and couldn‘t put it down. There is intrigue, spies, great strong women, awful sexist men and 2 great stories that intertwine.

I‘ve never read A Cold War/Russian book before. I was very interested in the history. The timeline confused me a little, but I just took a second and looked through the dates again to confirm.

Now I need more books in this time period!
