Well… what a long, arduous journey this has been. But like all difficult journeys there have been moments of great beauty, opportunities for philosophical insight, smiles, laughter, and discovery. Regardless of Shogun‘s myriad problems (from a 21st century stand point as well as from a writers) it has this ability to sweep you up and make you overlook its inadequacies like all the best epics do. Great story. Good characters. Just OK execution.

I can‘t come up with just one book of the year! I don‘t know how anyone can do it LOL they were all so good!

I read 417 books … here are 64 … I feel like such a failure … yes 64 of the best! I might be able to get it down to 50 … ugh 50? Oh well! These are all excellent books.

🎧📚 I loved this book. It took me 3 months to read.

There‘s a lot of suicides of honor & homicide galore. Evil ninja! Ruthless samurai. Conniving priests. The choice of killing your self or shaving your head and becoming a nun or monk! It was a dark time.

The 1600‘s was NOT a good time to be a female.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

AmyG I read this in the ‘80s….great book. 13mo
Twainy @AmyG it‘s so huge! If someone else hadn‘t broken into 3 and suggested a buddy read over 3 months I‘d prolly never have read it. I would have missed out!!! While I wasn‘t fond of the ending, the rest of the book was 5+ stars. It was easy to listen to & return to the paper version too. Good narration. Pillowing? Hee. 13mo

Leftover mashed potatoes means fritters for breakfast! I read more of SHŌGUN while I cooked to help me resist the impulse to flip ‘em too soon.

This‘ll be my last day with the book. Honestly, I dunno how Clavell‘s gonna wrap things up in forty pages. I have no clear memory of how the TV adaptation ended, so it‘ll be a total surprise!

Also, it hasn‘t happened yet but I think the back cover‘s about to fall off. 🤷‍♀️

I recently remembered how much I like grilled cheese. Now I‘m doing the read-and-cook thing while I experiment with the controversial* mayonnaise-not-butter method.

Also, SHŌGUN lost another 100 pages last night. It‘s now 342 pages, and I think it‘s gonna stay that way. The binding seems solid from here to the end.

* I don‘t think it‘s actually controversial.

Texreader Anxious to hear how mayo works out. Sounds pretty good to me 3y
xicanti @Texreader the flavour‘s good, but I think I prefer the texture you get with butter. The bread doesn‘t crispen up as much with mayonnaise. 3y
Texreader @xicanti That‘s interesting. I thought that was supposed to be the point for using Mayo. 3y

I didn‘t so much lose another chunk of SHŌGUN as willfully rip it off. It was detached at the top, and let‘s face it: nobody‘s ever gonna read this copy after me. I might as well ditch another section every time I hit one of those oh-so-annoying cracks.

I feel like Cheryl Strayed, burning the pages she read each night along the Pacific Crest Trail. Except without the burning. Or the hiking.

Anyways: I want to hit page 1000 next. Bring it on.

BookishMarginalia My parents would sometimes share paperback books. My mom would start and then my dad would rip off the sections she had read to read himself. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
Kimberlone I have done this for practicality before...I don‘t feel bad at all when it‘s a cheap trade paperback 3y

Lreads I love this and am living vicariously through you! 😝☺️ 3y
xicanti @BookishMarginalia I‘ve heard of people doing that! I can now testify that it really does make mega-chunksters easier to hold, as well as share. 3y
xicanti @Kimberlone this copy‘s older than I am, it‘d obviously been read a bunch of times before I got it, it‘s still in print, and it only cost me $0.40. If ever there was a good book to section up, it‘s this one! 3y
xicanti @Bklover I feel like I should be doing something Great and Meaningful while I rip up my book, but I‘m mostly just skulking around, trying to avoid winter! 3y
xicanti @QuietlyLaura I lost another 100 pages last night, so I‘m down to the last 342 pages! There‘re no more cracks after this, so I THINK I‘m done ripping bits off. We‘ll see if any other weird stuff happens. 3y

I lost another chunk of SHŌGUN last night. It‘s now a 598-page book.

I‘m hoping to pass page 800 tonight, then pause to read something else. I find I‘m super into the scenes where the characters navigate each other‘s cultures, but I‘m not so interested in Toranaga‘s political stuff. My attention wavers whenever Clavell focuses on that for a longer stretch, so I still need breaks even with the hand strain issue gone.

Today‘s plan: hit page 500, then take another break from SHŌGUN. I‘m mostly enjoying the story, but the physical experience is crap. The ache in my hands stretches all the way up to my shoulders, even though I keep trying different ways to hold the book. It‘s a dammed good reminder of why I quit reading mega-chunksters in print. Too bad the library doesn‘t have an ebook copy. 😔

Laughterhp Hmm that makes me wonder if I‘ve ever read a book that big in print. I don‘t think I‘ve ever read a book more than like 800 pages. 3y

Breakfast with a 70s chunkster. My dad was a huge James Clavell fan, so this book‘s been on my radar my whole life. I bought my copy from the Book Market‘s $0.40 table more than a decade ago, and 2021‘s the year I finally give it a try.

TBH, Current Me is leery of Asian-set books by Westerners, but I did see the TV miniseries (on tape, from Blockbuster) long ago and I THINK I remember it came down against xenophobia? We‘ll see.

This one was an epic read, the writing is admirable; it's hard work though as the plot is very complex and over-long.

The story contains ruthless samurai, scheming priests, impenetrable fortresses, dishonourable ninja and everything else about feudal Japan which captures the imagination.

Although not for the faint-hearted as there's so many decapitations, a diabolical execution and overall violence within these pages.

4/5 💫

TheNeverendingTBR I'd been wanting to read this book for quite some time, due to the overall positive feedback and reviews on it; so here we have it - and after finishing this 1152 page lump of a book...I am exhausted. 😂

If you like large books that you can get lost in, give this one a try.

Now for some light-hearted reading I think.

Today‘s ThriftBooks #bookhaul! Some of these have been on my wishlist more than 10 years. I loved the Shogun miniseries when I watched it in the ‘80s. My mom had a well-worn paperback back then, but I never got to read it. I bought a hardback in the ‘90s-turned our to be only vol.2. Dragon Awesome, it's definitely a door stopper but I think it's worth it 👍 7y
ApoptyGina69 I once bought a hardback (or maybe found it?) bc I didn't notice 'til later that it was merely vol. 2! I don't want the mass market paperback experience, so I continue to look for both hardback volumes or the like. Want to read!! Loved and own the miniseries with Richard Chamberlain. 7y
Sydsavvy I remember seeing it on TV then rushing through the book. What a hunk. 7y
annalibris My husband had a copy just like that, and re-read it completely in half last fall. My parents got him a hardback copy for Christmas. 😊 7y
Libby1 @Reecaspieces - it IS good but SOOO long. 7y
Libby1 @CouronneDhiver , @Dragon - it IS worth it. I just wish it wasn't taking me so long. 7y
Libby1 @ApoptyGina69 - I would certainly prefer this in more than one volume. My copy is an old mass market paperback from the 80s. As my husband has already read it 3 times it looks ready to give up the ghost. 7y
Libby1 @annalibris - sounds like what we're going through! 😊 7y

An extraordinary historical fiction set in Japan, the novel is just an amazing feat of the written word. If you like beautifully detailed, intricately woven cultural fiction, you should definitely check out Shogun.

"...The Christian religion was vulnerable because they taught that their chief deity, Jesu, said all people should 'love' one another - he taught nothing about honour or duty, only love... I thought if they 'love one another', perhaps we can control the leader by taking the life... of one of the men."

A samurai explains how to control John Blackthorne. I'm a Christian, and I grieve when we're so often shown to be unloving. I want to show love!

It's my husband's birthday this weekend. He's been begging me to tackle this behemoth for years.

Happy birthday, honey.

The red book is a photo album from a trip I took to Japan many years ago. You know, from back when I actually had photos developed.

UwannaPublishme 😁👍🏻 7y
Bookdodger Read it years ago and loved it! Enjoy! 7y
Libby1 Thanks, @UwannaPublishme and @Bookdodger ! I'm looking forward to it. When I lived in England I remember driving through a town called Gillingham, which is where John Adams, the original John Blackthorne, was born. 7y

Dragon I read this years ago and loved it I then read Noble House , Tai Pan and King Rat. Shogun was my favourite 😀 7y
JazzFeathers I read it many years ago and really liked it. I remember always being put off by the size, then every time l took it up, l would think, why did l wait this long? It's a great story :) 7y
annalibris I read this one years ago, too, and it's one of my husband's favorites. He actually got a new copy from my parents for Christmas this year because he had read our paperback literally into pieces. 7y
