The Redwall series by Brian Jacques was a favourite of mine when I was younger. I have managed to purchase most of the series for when the little guy is a bit older. For the most part the entire series takes place outside and it was the first series that came to mind when thinking of the outdoors.

This is one me and my boys will read at bedtime! We are now in the stage where at bed time I read 1 or 2 chapters out of a book. I‘m enjoying that a little too much I think!Right now we are reading The Emerald Atlas by John Stephens which is the first book in the Books of Beginning Series. I forgot how much I ❤️that series. I haven‘t read Redwall so I‘m looking forward to that one next! Are you reading anything with your kids?

msford88 Funny you post this. I just threw up a review on Redwall. I just re-read it, and I loved it all over again. I have a feeling your kids will really enjoy it. 11mo
Reviewsbylola How old are your kids? Mine are 6 & 4 and still not into chapter books being read to them. I have read one to my 6 year old and although she loved using the bookmark and the sense of accomplishment when we finished, overall she wasn‘t a fan. The book we read was 11mo
TheWordJar I feel like you snuck into my house to take this picture! We also have those Paw Patrol friends, and I was just talking about Redwall with my son. He‘s 9 and wants to start his own book discussion with me (his older sister does this...we read a book “together” on our own, then chat about it...we homeschool). He balked at the tiny type of Redwall, but he picked The Cricket in Times Square! I may save Redwall as a read aloud...they‘d all love it! 11mo

ravenlee My daughter and I are finishing the Chronicles of Prydain series; we‘re just past halfway through The High King. @Reviewsbylola have you tried reading a mystery? My daughter is 5 and she really got into Nancy Drew, which helped transition us into reading longer books out loud. 11mo
BookaholicNatty @Reviewsbylola my kids are 9 & 4. My 4 year old always falls asleep which is half of the reason I do it and it took my 9 year old a while to get in the swing of doing it. And each night before we start a new chapter we have to review about what happened the night before. He has adhd so reading comprehension is something he struggles with so I started this in hopes that it would help improve that. 11mo
Reviewsbylola Thank you. @BookaholicNatty My 4 year old would probably fall asleep too. 😂 And no, I haven‘t tried a mystery @ravenlee. I was going to try Ronald Dahl next but mysteries are a good idea. 11mo
shanaqui Aaah I used to adore that series as a kid! 11mo
BookaholicNatty @Reviewsbylola which books are Ronald Dahl books!? I‘m curious! 😃 11mo
Reviewsbylola Sorry that was auto correct. 😂😂 Should say Roald Dahl. 11mo
Reviewsbylola I‘m thinking of starting with this one. 11mo
mdm139 We read a chapter or 2 from classic lit book to our kiddos as part of their bedtime routine every night. Currently reading Alice in Wonderland because my oldest is going to be in a Alice in Wonderland play. 11mo
ravenlee @Reviewsbylola Cam Jansen and Nate the Great are good kid-friendly mysteries. There‘s a Young Cam Jansen series for beginning readers, too. Nate is a bit dated, and Cam is somewhat too, but we‘ve enjoyed them. 11mo
Shaneyney Love the Redwall books. I have the whole set. There‘s like 15 or something 11mo

This was one of my favorite books as a kid. And I enjoyed it again, albeit in a much different way. It's inarguably one of the classics in the fantasy genre, and it's stood the test of time. So if you've been on the fence about rereading this gem or haven't yet given it a read, there's no time like the present.

Reviewsbylola My husband loved this one as a kid and bought it for my stepdaughter but as far as I know she never read it. 11mo

My first attempt at cooking! Of course it had to be book related! 😁 From the Redwall series feasts, I made the otter specialty shrimp'n'hotroot soup! Only I used chicken instead of shrimp and kale instead of watercress! And toasted bread with cheese! It came out really yummy! 🍲🍞💕 #bookndinner

This was one of my favorite series as a kid, but I hadn't read it in 20 years. I recently reread this first book in the series, and while it didn't capture my attention the way it used to, and I wanted to punch certain little known-it-all main characters, I can appreciate the valuable lessons it provides for young readers. The writing itself is very descriptive, whether it's their tasty lunch or the severed head of their enemy being described.

🐭🐭🐭 I wasn't as enchanted with this book as I thought I'd be. It wasn't very nuanced and had loads of clichés (which I really really hate). To be fair, it is a child/teenage book so I guess that's understandable. I would have loved it if I had read it as a child. I've got the next book in my tbr stack so I'll definitely read it and that will determine whether or not I get the third one.

3⭐ I was really engaged with this story when it focused on the quest, but could have done without the battles and war. For a children's book, it was a bit more graphic than I expected and I didn't understand why Clooney was attacking Redwall. The full cast version was incredibly well done and I'm glad I read it. I own the book and plan on giving it to my nephew when he gets older. I don't expect to continue on with the series.

For @ruthemmielang's #BeastsGiveawayChallenge : #AnimalStories

How could I not choose this series for today's prompt? These classic adventure stories with an all-animal cast were the books that made me a reader. They were the first books I collected, and they have followed me everywhere. From my dorm room, to my first apartment, to when I married @acorter. I recommend these to every child reader I meet, and can't wait to share them with my kids!

I honestly don't understand how I grew up without reading this book. It would have been right up my alley.

The story is largely predictable and the main characters very much in line with established tropes. The world/animals somewhat made up for it. I don't know if I'll continue on with the series, as it didn't suck me in quite that far.

A nice filler book between holds, but I probably would have found it far more fascinating as a pre-teen.
