🌹I loved Hans Christian Anderson‘s illustrated books / stories. I still have a book I received for Christmas as a 10 year old.
🌹It‘s winter reading for me... it was slow for a while but I am less distracted now🙂

It‘s a bit rainy and blustery this morning, but I had to go see her.
pickThe little mermaid is a modern fantasy book that was published in 1998. This story is about an underwater family that is home of the sea king. The little mermaid sees a ship one which she sees a handsome prince and she decides she loves him. The little mermaid one day rescues the prince and tells her sisters of her new found love.
I got the tiniest mermaid ring for a dollar next door to my work. I love it so much.

This is a classic fairytale and basically exactly what I expected. A nice short read to start off the year with.

I grew up with Disney movies, and my favourite was Ariel. And even though loving her for years, I have never read the original story. I decided to read it, to cherish it properly.
The story dropped my jaw, made me unable to sleep. It shook me quite hard.
If you are expecting a happy ending, there is NONE. A very dark story, with a sad and terrible end.
A great author, great descriptions, but a non fairytale end.

I always thought the ending was so tragically romantic, even as a child. **sigh**

pickThis was a short little story. I wish the resolution was different but I was satisfied by the ending.
A special little girl is 4 today, and wants a little mermaid birthday. So I found mermaid wrapping paper, & I'm making a pink cake with white frosting and Ariel on top (cake decoration pictured). 2 jars of her new favorite jelly, a mermaid movie, and lots of books (tagged in comments).

I like the original even more than the Disney version. It's heartbreaking and bittersweet, and the mermaid sacrifices so much to earn a soul and her humanity. For a good retelling, try "Drown" by Esther Dalseno.
