From A to Z, the Penguin Drop Caps series collects 26 unique hardcovers featuring cover art by Jessica Hische It all begins with a letter. Fall in love with Penguin Drop Caps, a new series of twenty-six collectible and hardcover editions, each with a type cover showcasing a gorgeously illustrated letter of the alphabet. In a design collaboration between Jessica Hische and Penguin Art Director Paul Buckley, the series features unique cover art by Hische, a superstar in the world of type design and illustration, whose work has appeared everywhere from Tiffany & Co. to Wes Anderson's recent film "Moonrise Kingdom" to Penguin's own bestsellers "Committed" and "Rules of Civility." With exclusive designs that have never before appeared on Hische's hugely popular Daily Drop Cap blog, the Penguin Drop Caps series debuted with an 'A' for Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," a 'B' for Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre," and a 'C' for Willa Cather's "My Antonia." It continues with more perennial classics, perfect to give as elegant gifts or to showcase on your own shelves. X is for Xinran. In 1994, journalist and author Xinran met a Chinese woman with an extraordinary story. For over thirty years, since the 1950s, Shu Wen searched the mountains of north Tibet for her husband, a Chinese military doctor, who was missing in action. Her moving and unforgettable life story brilliantly recreated by Xinran, gives insight into the landscape, religion and people of Tibet. At the same time it illuminates the complex and emotional relationship and history between the Tibetans and Chinese. Traveling thousands of miles, and taken in by a Tibetan family, Shu Wen lived a nomadic life through numerous seasons with silence and simplicity, motivated by her search for her husband. An unforgettable and ultimately uplifting tale of loss, loyalty, courage and survival, above all, "Sky Burial" is an epic and enduring love story."

I choose to highlight this favourite as it stayed with me long after I finished it. Such a haunting and moving book. ❤️💔

Another favourite #letterS is The Sense Of An Ending, Julian Barnes. Elegantly and melancholy told, a brilliant examination of memory.

My attempt at mountain pose while holding my kindle... harder than it seems 😋

This book was so interesting with its insight into Tibetan nomads, sky burials, the conflict between the Chinese and Tibetans, and one woman‘s search for a husband she refuses to believe is dead. This is a semi-fictionalised versions of true events. While some people haven‘t liked the ending, I liked the possibilities it left.

Translated story about a woman searching for her husband in Tibet. Amazing story, though I think it‘s probably better in the native Chinese. This was my LAST book for the #litsyAtoZ challenge, for the letter X. I‘m done! @BookishMarginalia

Today I realized I've got a short U-authored novel on La TBR (BREADCRUMBS by Anne Ursu), so I've got a fighting chance of completing my 2018 A to Z Authors list after all. I promptly borrowed SKY BURIAL by Xinran, X being the other letter I was missing, and dug right in alongside a bowl of red curry tofu & sausage and a bottle of Tsingtao.

BookBabe Looks delicious! 😋 Want. 6y
BookNAround I enjoyed Sky Burial and in a six degrees of separation way, I went to high school with Anne Ursu. She was a year behind me but it was a very small school so I actually knew her. I sent her a congratulations after her first book was published. 6y

Very good. Even though this is a very short book it is powerful as it is one women's quest to find her lost husband and what she learns along the way. Recommend.

Nonfiction book that seems impossible to believe about a Chinese woman‘s incredible search across Tibet for her missing husband. There is some discussion of the Dalai Lama and his role. This satisfies my Litsy A to Z letter “X”! On to “Z” and looks like I will complete the challenge!

merelybookish Congrats! I finished the challenge with this book too. (The story was fascinating but I found some of the narration annoying and wondered if it was a translation issue.) 7y

I had a productive Sunday. I started and finished Sky Burial which I found to be a straight forward read that was more a story of how someone acclimated to a new culture rather than the “love story” between two characters. Finished up Sekret - fun, fast paced YA novel kitty with psychic teenage spies Hi in Communist Russia. I DNFed My Favorite Thing is Monsters, finding it just too big and heavy for me at the moment. Good reading weekend though!

I never would have discovered this book without the #litsyatoz challenge. X was the only letter missing from my own shelves so I grabbed this one from the library. It is a slim 200 pages about a Chinese woman who heads to Tibet in 1958 in search of her Army doctor husband. They had only been married for 100 days but Shu Wen cannot accept the notice of his death she has received with its lack of details. Her journey takes her 30 years.
