Sherlock Holmes and the Christmas Demon
Sherlock Holmes and the Christmas Demon | James Lovegrove
31 posts | 19 read | 11 to read
The new Sherlock Holmes novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Age of Odin and Firefly - Big Damn Hero. It is 1890, and in the days before Christmas Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson are visited at Baker Street by a new client. Eve Allerthorpe - eldest daughter of a grand but somewhat eccentric Yorkshire-based dynasty - is greatly distressed, as she believes she is being haunted by a demonic Christmas spirit. Her late mother told her terrifying tales of the sinister Black Thurrick, and Eve is sure that she has seen the creature from her bedroom window. What is more, she has begun to receive mysterious parcels of birch twigs, the Black Thurrick's calling card... Eve stands to inherit a fortune if she is sound in mind, but it seems that something - or someone - is threatening her sanity. Holmes and Watson travel to the Allerthorpe family seat at Fellscar Keep to investigate, but soon discover that there is more to the case than at first appeared. There is another spirit haunting the family, and when a member of the household is found dead, the companions realise that no one is beyond suspicion.

I read this one during Christmas Day. Perfect for that day. I enjoyed it. What I like is Holmes analytical thought process to make a conclusion and discover who committed the crime or the crime activity. I will say that it was a cliché who done it but it was good. I also like how atmospheric, descriptive the author was.3/3.5 ⭐️

Mehso-so

This was my first “Sherlock” book. Do not rely on me to solve any crimes 😬. I gave it a so-so because I‘m not a huge mystery fan.

I have little detective skills, but I am proud of my point check in number: 13,758! 🥳

dabbe When I taught SH to my students, I discovered that a big trait in a detective story is that we are NOT supposed to be able to solve the crime; that's why the detective is so brilliant and usually odd. We're just the Joe Schmoes sitting on the couch, eating potato chips while the detective tells us how he easily solved the crime. And yes, we usually feel stupid afterwards. And #woohoo for your points! 💙❄️💙 11mo

This SH fan was not disappointed by this novel. Attention was given in keeping the writing style and our beloved Holmes and Watson as close to Doyle's intent as possible. Perhaps Sherlock is a bit more condescending to Watson, but Watson definitely holds his own and his skills as a doctor are needed almost as much as SH's detective skills. A Gothic keep where a supposed Black Thurrick-Krampus demon is running amok, this is a worthy holiday read.

AnnR I had not seen that cover before. Yikes!😮I listened to this one on audio and it took me a while to figure out one of the characters was saying Thurrick. 😄 (edited) 11mo

It‘s no Hound of the Baskervilles, but it‘s pretty good. Didn‘t know what to expect as it is a pastiche & I‘ve read limited amounts of the originals, but I am a fan. but it was festive & enjoyable, I think it was true to the characters & had some good twists & silly Sherlock Shenangians.

It took me a couple of chapters to get into, but this turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable Holmes pastiche. It combines elements of the Country House Murder, and Baskerville-esque popular folklore, satanic aristocratic forebears, conniving servants, ghostly apparitions, all set in a gothic frozen landscape. Great fun!
Lovegrove set his story in real Yorkshire geography, which was well researched, which added to the book's atmosphere. 4⭐

Just started reading this one, and the characterisation of Holmes seems a bit off - rather too much asperity and condescension. Hopefully things will settle down. I see that this is included in the author's series of Holmes/Cthulhu mashups, so it will be interesting to see just how Lovecraftian it gets 🐙

Bookwomble There's also an intriguing passing reference to Wold Newton, the real life site of a 1795 meteor fall, which Philip José Farmer used to create his Wold Newton Universe, in which the extraordinary abilities of literary figures such as Holmes, Tarzan, Captain Nemo, Doc Savage and others is traced back to the mutagenic effects of the meteor on those exposed to its radiation, so, yes, in this universe, Holmes and Tarzan are related! 11mo
julesG HumbleBundle, com has a bundle with all of Lovegrove's Sherlock books on audio right now. 11mo
Bookwomble @julesG Thank you for the heads-up 😊 11mo
Bookwomble Update: The Lovecraft quotient was low. Still atmospheric in the style of The Hound of the Baskervilles. 11mo

dabbe No, you hit it right on the head. Sherlock is condescending to everyone, even Watson. He would be an extremely unlikable character if it weren't for Watson, though. Watson humanizes him. I'm looking forward to reading this pastiche! 💙❄️💙 12mo

I‘ve never read a Sherlock Holmes book before. Is this normal?

wanderinglynn Sort of. Sherlock Holmes was supposed to have a genius level IQ with incredible deductive reasoning and attention to detail. But in the original stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, I wouldn‘t say he talked to Watson as if he were a dimwit. (edited) 12mo
dabbe I also think the early movies in the 1930s (with Basil Rathbone as Sherlock) portrayed Watson as a bumbling dimwit (Nigel Bruce brilliantly playing said dimwit). The original canon does not portray him that way. He is seen as less than a genius (aka Sherlock) but by no means an idiot. It's kind of like seeing Karloff in FRANKENSTEIN in the same era. The real monster did not have green skin and electric bolts--totally different than the original. 12mo
Bookwomble What @dabbe said! Sherlock is often dismissive of the intellectual capacities of others, and did give Watson a hard time occasionally, but he had a genuine respect and love for his biographer 🫂 12mo

dabbe @Bookwomble 🤩😍😃 12mo
Bookwomble I've started reading this one, and Lovegrove has made his Holmes far more sarcastic and condescending than Doyle. It's not that these traits aren't there in the original, but Lovegrove seems to have really leaned into it, making Holmes a much less sympathetic character. I'm only on page 37, though, so we'll see if it evens out 🙂 @dabbe I'll be interested to hear your thoughts when you get around to this one ☺️ 11mo
dabbe @Bookwomble #greatminds I just started it last night. 🤩🤣😃 11mo
Bookwomble @dabbe Very good! 👏🏻 the annotated Holmes I'm reading is very particular about fixing dates and weather events mentioned in the stories, so I've been checking some of Lovegrove's facts, and he is so far correct about Christmas Eve 1890 being a Wednesday, and about the winter of 1890/91 being one of the coldest on record, so these are good indications 😄 11mo
dabbe @Bookwomble Cool! Thanks for doing the research! I only read about 10 pages before I fell asleep, so I'll probably start all over today! 🤩🤣😃 11mo

If you enjoy reading Sherlock Holmes I believe you would enjoy this book, in which James Lovegrove has done a good job of capturing the essence of the original books. This captures the darker side of Christmas linked to Christmas traditions of the past in some countries. Overall enjoyable and kept you guessing to the end.

A rather festive Sherlock story.

Asked to help a young lady to proof her sanity, Holmes and Watson travel to Yorkshire mere days before Christmas. Needless to say, Holmes cracks the case, he always does.

I liked the story. Will certainly (eventually) read the other books in the series.

Totally bought this because of the cover. Shame my kindle is black&white only.

This is the fourth book in Lovegrove's Sherlock series. I haven't read the other books (yet), but it doesn't seem to be necessary. Holmes is Holmes, and Lovegrove doesn't lean on previous adventures to propel the story forward.

Gratuitous pic of the moon from my kitchen window right now.

I finished my first book in the #dashingDecember readathon. It was a typical Sherlock Holmes story set around Christmas. I enjoyed it but I found myself hearing/seeing Basil Rathbone in my head. He's the Sherlock who was on TV every Sunday when I was a kid.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sometimes items on your holds list come a little later than expected but it is never too late to meet a new Holmes. At first I was taken aback by an affable and even charming Sherlock. Watson too is a more equal partner in their investigations. Once I let go of the image of a haughty scornful Sherlock, I began to appreciate Lovegrove‘s version. With the usual supernatural twists and red herrings it is an enjoyable tale.

This was my Christmas reading this year. Holmes and Watson travel to a country estate at Christmas to help a client who thinks she's being haunted by a kind of anti-Santa Claus. Going in I didn't know if this would have a supernatural twist or not (and I'm not telling!). I guessed a part of the plot because it's similar to one of the original stories. It's not the best or most original pastiche I have ever read, but I had fun reading it.
