ENGLISH DESCRIPTION #1 New York Times bestselling author! A New York Times Best Seller! Goodreads Choice Award Winner for Best Fiction of 2014! An Indie Next Pick! From New York Times bestselling author of Eleanor & Park and Fangirl, Rainbow Rowell, comes a hilarious, heart-wrenching take on love, marriage, and magic phones. Georgie McCool knows her marriage is in trouble. That it's been in trouble for a long time. She still loves her husband, Neal, and Neal still loves her, deeply-but that almost seems beside the point now.Maybe that was always beside the point. Two days before they're supposed to visit Neal's family in Omaha for Christmas, Georgie tells Neal that she can't go. She's a TV writer, and something's come up on her show; she has to stay in Los Angeles. She knows that Neal will be upset with her-Neal is always a little upset with Georgie-but she doesn't expect to him to pack up the kids and go without her. When her husband and the kids leave for the airport, Georgie wonders if she's finally done it. If she's ruined everything. That night, Georgie discovers a way to communicate with Neal in the past. It's not time travel, not exactly, but she feels like she's been given an opportunity to fix her marriage before it starts. . . . Is that what she's supposed to do? Or would Georgie and Neal be better off if their marriage never happened?"

This was fun to reread. When I read it in 2014 I didn‘t have any kids, now I have 2 that are similar ages to those in the book. Either you can embrace the fact that a phone is letting Georgie talk to her 1998 husband or you can't. If you love Rowell definitely read this one. Eleanor & Park is still my favorite, but this novel gives her readers a glimpse into how difficult real marriages can be, although we don't all have a magic phone.

CogsOfEncouragement I liked this one. I‘m open to whatever alternate universe an author wants to create, so I enjoyed the special phone. 5mo

Georgie & her husband Neil have a tense, busy parent type of relationship but when Neil takes their daughters to his parents for Christmas, Georgie stays home to work. Things go downhill until she finds an old phone that contacts Neil in the past. A little too long for me, asI thought it dragged and got repetitive at times, but a great what if type story. If you tried to change the past, could you or is destiny already set?

rachelk I just bought this from a used bookstore because I liked her book ‘Eleanor & Park‘ so much. 1y

Rainbow Rowell sure knows what she's doing. Georgie and Neal felt so real, and I loved the magic f*cking phone! And the subtle Cath and Levi cameo! So good. #womensfiction

marleed I loved this book too! 3y
kissmehardy @marleed It's not going to overtake Fangirl as my favorite of hers, but I think it's top 3! 3y
marleed @kissmehardy I really do enjoy her books. My dad gifted me two landline phones in high school - a very long time ago. One was a yellow banana phone and the other was Snoopy holding a traditional receiver. Both were yellow so I was obliged to read this book and was so happy it met my expectations! 3y

kissmehardy @marleed But did they let you call back in time??? 3y
marleed @kissmehardy Haha, no!!! And so funny if you scroll down a few pics on this page I post about that very thought. Dammit - if only I‘d appreciated then that my phones would become classics and saved them - I‘m sure they‘d be magic today. Maybe I could call my dad somewhere out there moving through his unencumbered dance in eternity - if only :) 3y

Last month‘s Rainbow Rowell‘s postings inspired me to push this atop my Dec #BookSpin list. I really enjoyed it and it‘s set during Christmas! I just kept thinking if only I‘d saved the favorite chorded phone of my youth, I‘m sure it too would allow me some magical calls today. Alas, all I have is this photo and the endless entertainment it allows my kids - because yes, I took my chorded phone to a grassy knoll for a grad photo shoot!

mcipher I love this picture! 😆 4y

marleed @Nute @SheReadsAndWrites @CoffeeAndABook @Brooke_H Thank you! If only I could have plugged it into the cigarette lighter of a car and had my number work while driving the strip. I‘d have spent even more time there! But I spent many hours in my bedroom waiting for that thing to ring as etiquette of a chorded phone was the girl never called the boy. Geesh! 4y
Kimberlone Amazing pic love the whole aesthetic! 4y
CoffeeAndABook @marleed ah yes 😅 the time spent hovering around a phone, waiting for it to ring 🤦🏼‍♀️ also this: our home phone was in our hall, not even a chair nearby. So basically I had countless hours-long conversations standing up in the hallway, for everyone to hear. Inconceivable 😂 4y
marleed @Kimberlone Thank you! 4y
marleed @CoffeeAndABook Oh that‘s a funny memory and shared by many, I‘m sure! ...We had a ‘teenage‘ line with a super long, mangled chord that travelled about our bedrooms and staircase. I was the youngest my dad raised so I had that line all to my self, and it didn‘t go wasted. I also had a Snoopy phone because really the only memory my siblings remember of me when they came back to the house was me on or near my phone. 4y

So this started out REALLY strong for me, but by the time my final matzah ball had plumped to perfection, I found this book more silly & sappy than super satisfying! It was still a sweet, light listen but the magic didn‘t really hold up. I also knew by chapter 4 EXACTLY how this book would end, which I found disappointing seeing that the author chose the obvious cliché. All that being said, RR writes really wonderful social banter? ??

Cinfhen And I‘m glad I picked up this book for #AAM / it was a great recommendation @Megabooks and a solid kickstart for #FeastMode @Hestapleton I‘ve already completed one book!!! 4y

This sci-fi romance was an interesting book. 37-year-old Georgie McCool is a sitcom writer in 2013. She cannot accompany her husband, Neal and their 2 daughters to Neals‘s house in Omaha for Christmas, as her dream project has been picked up by a major channel. She discovers a landline in her parents‘ house where she can call 22-year-old Neal. I enjoyed the idea and their real married life. #AuthorAMonth

I had totally forgotten how sweet and magical this book is. Rebecca Lowman is the perfect narrator for Rainbow‘s books, and even though I‘m not much for romance, I was completely charmed by Neal, Georgie, their 15-year love story, and that magical phone. First I don‘t usually read books with martial issues they make me anxious. This wasn‘t too bad but mostly I just couldn‘t stand the characters. I listened to the audio of this for my second #authoramonth pick. This one I really liked! It had a few moments where it veered too far into angst for me, but for the most part It‘s one of the few titles of her‘s that I‘ve thoroughly enjoyed. It‘s more fun to read this going in a bit blind, so I‘ll just say that this, (unlike Attachments imo) this really IS an adult novel, though still with a bit of whimsy. And a great read at this time of year.

Fun, likable characters mix with Georgie's strange behavior for an enjoyable, easy read.

Main characters were unlikable. Neal did not come off as a nice person and Georgie was such a whiner and acted like she was still a teenager, all angsty over the holiday separation. I also had a hard time figuring out if we were in current day or flashing back to when they were both younger or if it was current-day Georgie talking on the landline to younger Neal I‘m rating it ok, but I think I liked the premise more than the execution of it.
