Golden Son
Golden Son: Book II of The Red Rising Trilogy | Pierce Brown
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR, BUZZFEED, AND BOOKLIST With shades of The Hunger Games, Enders Game, and Game of Thrones, debut author Pierce Browns genre-defying epic Red Rising hit the ground running and wasted no time becoming a sensation. Golden Son continues the stunning saga of Darrow, a rebel forged by tragedy, battling to lead his oppressed people to freedom. As a Red, Darrow grew up working the mines deep beneath the surface of Mars, enduring backbreaking labor while dreaming of the better future he was building for his descendants. But the Society he faithfully served was built on lies. Darrows kind have been betrayed and denied by their elitist masters, the Goldsand their only path to liberation is revolution. And so Darrow sacrifices himself in the name of the greater good for which Eo, his true love and inspiration, laid down her own life. He becomes a Gold, infiltrating their privileged realm so that he can destroy it from within. A lamb among wolves in a cruel world, Darrow finds friendship, respect, and even lovebut also the wrath of powerful rivals. To wage and win the war that will change humankinds destiny, Darrow must confront the treachery arrayed against him, overcome his all-too-human desire for retributionand strive not for violent revolt but a hopeful rebirth. Though the road ahead is fraught with danger and deceit, Darrow must choose to follow Eos principles of love and justice to free his people. He must live for more.BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Pierce Brown's Morning Star.Praise for Golden SonGripping . . . Both author and lead character have cranked up the emotional stakes. . . . With Golden Son, Brown avoids the sophomore slump, charging the novel with the kind of dystopia-toppling action youd expect in a trilogy ender, not a middle volume. On virtually every level, this is a sequel that hates sequelsa perfect fit for a hero who already defies the tropes. [Grade:] AEntertainment WeeklyStirring . . . Comparisons to The Hunger Games and Game of Thrones series are inevitable, for this tale has elements of both.Kirkus ReviewsBrown writes layered, flawed characters . . . but plot is his most breathtaking strength. . . . Every action seems to flow into the next.NPRIts a far superior sequel, in fact: one of the rare breed of reads that improves upon its predecessor in every conceivable category. . . . In a word, Golden Son is stunning. Never mind how little weve seen of 2015: Among science fiction fans, it should be a shoo-in for book of the year.Tor.comBrown is a prodigy. As great as the first book of the Red Rising Trilogy is, Golden Son is even better. A wild ride full of suspense, intrigue, and serious ass-kicking bravado, its expertly written and emotionally engaging, with top-notch universe-building that begs for further exploration. I want more!Christopher Golden, New York Times bestselling author of Snowblind The stakes are even higher than they were in Red Rising, and the twists and turns of the story are every bit as exciting. Wow, I can‘t wait another minute to start the next book (pictured). I‘m not sure why I waited so long to read Red Rising but I‘m so glad I got the series for Christmas!! Golden son is my favorite so far!

Gryffleclaw95 I‘m nervous to start Golden Son because I loved the first book so much 🙈 4w
CWilson I liked it even more than Red Rising! Less of a hunger games feel, and more political plotting and revolution! 4w

There were a lot of battle scenes that I find hard to follow, and it ends on a cliff hanger. This suffers from middle book syndrome.

Still it was entertaining enough.

Since it had been a while since I read the first book, I forgot most of the characters and it took me a few chapters to get back into the story. The writing style improved and I jumped straight into book 3!

And #bookmail from Saturday includes these two titles. I used my Penguin Random House rewards for Golden Son (don‘t tell me I have a $30 limit or I‘m going to come as close as possible.)

I had to do the dastardly thing and order from Amazon so I picked up Fury since it was never sold in my local shop. I feel a little bit better thy it came from a small separate bookstore and not the conglomerate.

Trashcanman Who's your favorite star wars person may I ask! 6mo
LibrarianRyan How dare you ask me such a hard question. It‘s like choosing which dog is my favorite (who am I kidding it‘s Flib 🐶). Original series R2 and Yoda, prequels JarJar (don‘t tell anyone I said that), new series Rose. I pretend the Han Solo movie doesn‘t exist. This chapter.. ?? I think it's one of the most traumatic ending ever!!
The first time I read it, I was in shock!! I couldn't believe half the things I was reading, like "Pierce Brown, what are you doing?! Also, you can't do all THIS and then expect me to wait months for the next book!!!"

Now, second time around, I'm still in shock but I've already started book3, Morning Star ?

DGRachel I STILL sob through this ending, even on rereads. I really fear what Pierce will do to the readers in Dark Age. 6mo

Book 2 of this trilogy was even better than book 1. This really does feel like one great big epic and would most probably make a great film series. Can‘t say it always goes the way you expect it to, or definitely want to, but it does make you HAVE to read on. I definitely need to get to the third book before I forget all the action (and there is plenty) from book 2. I think it is the kind of book you could read again & again & still pick up more.

Andrew65 Definitely recommend this series if you like great stories, epics, fantasy, action books etc... Just read them! 7mo
DGRachel YES! YES! YES! Go get Morning Star now. I TOLD you to have book three queued up. 🤣🤣 Golden Son is my favorite of the original trilogy but Morning Star is a roller coaster ride of action and emotion. 7mo

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. This series is incredible. I liked Golden Son even better than Red Rising. The story is so complex, as soon as you understand the rules it evolves. I‘m devouring these.

DGRachel This was my favorite of the original trilogy, but Morning Star is an absolute roller coaster! Enjoy! 7mo
LitLogophile So I really don‘t understand what‘s going on here, are the first three a trilogy and then the other two are another story? Or did he start writing a trilogy and realize he needed more books? @DGRachel (edited) 7mo
DGRachel There‘s the original trilogy that takes place back-to-back. The next two are the first of a second trilogy that begins 10 years after Morning Star ends. The scope of the second trilogy is even bigger, with multiple POV characters. 7mo

Pierce Brown, you are the Aaron Burr of storytelling. Patient to gorydamned perfection. The whole time you said, wait for it! And then you twisted the story on its side, had it dance a rather clever jig I must say seeing as how I totally bought it ... and then you shoved a knife in its gut and said, “See! All done. I was right!”

@Litsy Just make a “Loved It” button, with a picture of a love bug, & I‘ll just hug it all over this review! ♥️

I really enjoy this series, but I sometimes find Darrow to be a really frustrating protagonist. And this book did so much plotting in the past that it felt a little cheap. Does anyone else find the chapter titles to be TOO spoilery? This one ends with such a wild upheaval though, so obviously I‘m starting Morning Star immediately.

There is so much action in this book that it is hard to put down/turn off the audio. Again, the narrator of this audiobook is awesome. I‘ve never laid in bed at night and listened to a book for hours – totally engrossed, unable to stop listening because it‘s so exciting. I can‘t tell you too much or I‘d spoil it… except the plot thickens & there is a scene reminiscent of “The Red Wedding”.

I'm glad I reread this series now. It's exciting and emotional and nothing is ever easy for the characters, despite their talents. Plus, there're plenty of space battles and one hell of a middle book cliffhanger.

I highly recommend it on audio, too. These books are basically My Fair Lady on crack, and narrator Tim Gerard Reynolds slides Darrow's accent between his original Red and learned Gold in line with the character's emotional state. 👍👍
