John Dies at the End
John Dies at the End | David Wong, Jason Pargin
John Dies at the End is a genre-bending, humorous account of two college drop-outs inadvertently charged with saving their small town--and the world--from a host of supernatural and paranormal invasions. This updated special edition includes commentary from the characters and the author! "[Jason Pargin] has updated the Lovecraft tradition and infused it with humor that rather than lessening the horror, increases it dramatically. Every time I set the book down, I was wary that something really was afoot, that there were creatures I couldn't see, and that because I suspected this, I was next. Engaging, comic, and terrifying." --Joe Garden, Features Editor, The Onion "[Pargin] is like a mash-up of Douglas Adams and Stephen King... 'page-turner' is an understatement." --Don Coscarelli, director, Phantasm I-V, Bubba Ho-tep STOP. You should not have touched this book with your bare hands. NO, don't put it down. It's too late. They're watching you. My name is David. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it's too late. You touched the book. You're in the game. You're under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why? You just have to trust me. The important thing is this: The sauce is a drug, and it gives users a window into another dimension. John and I never had the chance to say no. You still do. Unfortunately for us, if you make the right choice, we'll have a much harder time explaining how to fight off the otherworldly invasion currently threatening to enslave humanity. I'm sorry to have involved you in this, I really am. But as you read about these terrible events and the very dark epoch the world is about to enter as a result, it is crucial you keep one thing in mind: None of this was my fault.

I really wanted to like this book. I read it with my husband, thinking it was up both our alleys - his for the horror and mine for the weird sci fi.

It was good until about halfway through. Then it became a slog to the finish for both of us. Have you ever played Candy Land with a small child who kept adding rules so that the game would never end? This felt exactly like that.

Vanessa I don‘t want to say I‘d never read another Pargin book. This was his first novel, and I would guess his books get better from here. He is an imaginative, funny writer, and he does horror and sci-fi well. I do think he likes d*ck jokes a little too much, but otherwise, the writing is not the problem. We both just really felt like this one could have ended right in the middle and we would have been happy with it. 2y

#StoryGraph: fiction fantasy horror adventurous dark funny

My first book of 2023 was a doozy!

This is one of the strangest books I have ever read, and I couldn‘t have enjoyed it more. It‘s creepy, fantastical, horrific, and completely unique — picture a humorous Lovecraft novel. I know it won‘t appeal to everyone but, if you like weirdness, this is your book.

“STOP. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages.”

Hello, killscene. No. Bailed in Chapter 1.

Summary: Twenty-year-old stoner dudebros fight Lovecraftian creatures. John is not the narrator's name. This reader thinks it's all stupid. News at eleven!

esurient Also of note, Wong -- the name of the narrator and author, is not Asian. The name is a disguise and a pseudonym, respectively. (edited) 5y
esurient I, the reader, is bummed because this was a catchy title. Fans of stream-of-conscious, experimental novels would best be suited for this one. 5y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I bailed too. Too bro for me. Oh well. 5y
NotCool His books kinda remind me of Dogma, the movie, where there are wonderful moments and then pages of a specific type of bro-ness. 4y
esurient @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @NotCool Definitely sliding scale of individual interest with this one! The people who have loved it are so enthused about it that it makes me sad I had to bail so quickly. (edited) 4y

I read this book back in 2007 when it came out and just read it again after all that time. It‘s a crazy story that pretty much makes no sense at the same time as making all the sense in the world. From the soy sauce and the freezer meat monster, to the bratwurst incident and parallel dimensions, this book messes with your head. Great book!

For my first quarantine read, I wanted something odd, and boy did this book deliver. It‘s both funny & dark, & much of what happens is never fully explained. But that‘s also the charm of it. We as the reader only know what the characters know and let‘s face it, neither John nor David are the smartest or most reliable narrators. However something about them and the memorable supporting characters is still endearing enough to keep you invested.

i‘m panning! ugh i hate to do it but i‘m not in the mood for something so all over the place (does this book even have a plot?) i promise i‘ll revisit u later

DaveGreen7777 I enjoyed this book, but yeah... the stream of consciousness writing style really made it feel all over the place at times, and the endless potty humor got old, too. I think the writer has talent, but I found he him got in his own way by trying too hard to be quirky and shocking sometimes! 😕 5y

The image on the bottom right corner of the cover accurately reflects how I feel about this book. It was not for me. I can see its appeal for others and maybe it would have been better in print rather than audio. I listened to the second half at 1.5X speed, so maybe I would have bailed in print. I was just annoyed by the “drunk guy” humor and mad I bought the whole series. 🤦🏻‍♀️ At least it counts for MountTBR and #Screamathon.

I started this book around midnight last night, then read today for an hour in a really hot bath with a sinus headache and a beer. I watched the movie a while back and I can‘t tell if I‘m remembering that or if I‘ve actually read this before, and it‘s kind of unsettling because it‘s a weird book. I really I shouldn‘t read it when I‘m not quite with it. Pictured with my unfiltered real life messy weird living room situation.

So I have mixed feelings about this. I don‘t read a lot of horror, but I really liked this for the wackiness and the humor. However, the plot was ALL over the place (you can tell it was self published), and all the offensive language kinda ruined it for me a bit. In context, maybe it makes sense to have it, but I didn‘t feel like it added anything.

Spoilers! Geez! A very well written, insane journey of messing with eldritch powers beyond our mortal ken all while maintaining a hilarious tone and sense of humor. Still at times dark without pulling too much mood whiplash and a very clever twist that will have you going back to read and see if you missed the signs along the way. Squidapus found this book had just enough tentacles to keep him satisfied and was solidly consistent beginning to end.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Squidapus should keep going with this series. Each one is a bit more polished than the last and they all balance dark and funny well. 6y
