Well, what can I say. Every gory scene you can think of, so many twists and bad decisions and miserable lives.
I‘m not sure I enjoyed it, but couldn‘t stop reading.

I have my books planned for the 2019 #ReadingWomenChallenge now, too. 😃 Almost all are from my existing tbr, and every one of them is by a female author.

Together with my planned books for #Booked2019 and #Popsugar2019 I have exactly 100 books scheduled for next year. That should still leave me time for at least 50 other books I can choose as I go. So, I‘m probably done signing up for 2019 challenges now. Possibly. Maybe. 😂

sammisho @LoverofLit I wanna do this one too!! 6y
LoverofLit Man come on! You're killing me! But this one does sound for real so good. How can I pass up an amazing woman challenge?! 👯💪❤ 6y
See All 20 Comments
sprainedbrain @LoverofLit @sammisho If you go to the website, they even have helpful ideas for some of the prompts. 😬 https://www.readingwomenpodcast.com/reading-women-challenge-2019/ 6y
sammisho @LoverofLit we can overlap with #pop18 and #booked18, right? Thanks for the tip @sprainedbrain 6y
LoverofLit I love helpful ideas...Dangit! It means I'm definitely doing 3 challenges 😅😍 #Booked2019 #pop19 #readingwomenchallenge 6y
sprainedbrain @LoverofLit 😂😂😂 6y
BarbaraBB It sounds great. But I‘ve also planned the Around The Year (ATY) challenge of Goodreads (and Booked and Pop) which is already way too much and will frustrate me by March... but I so love the planning 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 6y
mreads I'm doing this challenge too! Plus the #booked2019 and I started a century read challenge that I'm supposed to complete by July 2019 6y
sprainedbrain @BarbaraBB I was thinking of doing ATY casually with my ‘extra‘ books if they fit... that was actually the first ever reading challenge I did years ago, and I love it. I started out this year with ideas for 6 different challenges, but I‘m only going to finish 4. I don‘t use the same book for more than one challenge/prompt, though... Some of the best books I‘ve read this year have been for challenges—I just love them. 😃 6y
sprainedbrain @mreads is that the #192019 challenge? I started that one last hear but I don‘t think I‘m going to get it done. 😬 6y
LauraBeth I need to finish up my selections for the Reading Women challenge! I‘m looking forward to seeing what you‘ll be reading 😀 6y
BarbaraBB That is tough, not reading one book for multiple prompts! Cool! ATY looks very nice. 6y
mreads @sprainedbrain not familiar with #192019 just heard a few podcasters mention a century read and I wasn't interested at first thinking eh I don't want to read books by a bunch of white guys but then around June decided I would do the challenge but keep to majority women or poc if male. Its been a good challenge 6y
sprainedbrain @mreads that‘s an excellent approach. 😃 6y
sprainedbrain @LauraBeth can‘t wait to see your choices! 6y
Liz_M Ooh, this looks like an excellent challenge! 😍 6y
kspenmoll Thanks for posting! 6y
alisiakae I want to do this one too, but not sure if I can manage 3 year-long challenges! It‘s tempting me to take a break from #pop19 6y
Cinfhen I tried to bite off more than I could chew last year so I‘m only doing two this year but I see a lot of crossover here.... maybe I‘ll see what books I can knock off with my other challenges. Thanks for sharing 💚 6y

I put the flannel sheets on my bed a week ago, but tonight is the night. I‘m breaking out my winter PJs. As much as I hate winter, there‘s nothing better than snuggling up with a book in a cozy bed.

I chose my current book because it fits the #booked18 prompt for a protagonist over 70. And plus how amazing is that cover. And PLUS the 84 year old MC is named Florence. 😍 I‘m only three chapters in but I‘m feeling it‘s a five star read. 🤞🏻

emilyhaldi Oohhh into this one. Also, im sleeping with my window open ☺️ 6y
Kalalalatja I‘ll be looking forward to your review! 6y
Mdargusch I need to read this for that prompt! I really liked The Trouble With Goats and Sheep. 6y
Ajh01 I loved The Trouble with Goats and Sheep' but this one nah! 6y

This is old-fashioned in the best of ways. It‘s a classic English country house murder mystery, with a dash of the gothic thrown in too. Part Dame Agatha, part Dame Daphne.
A remote crumbling manor house, a sinister housekeeper, a family with hidden secrets-it‘s all here.
I liked Ware‘s debut, was so-so on her next two, but finally I feel like she‘s earned her reputation as the “Modern-day Agatha Christie” with this.

Abailliekaras Wow, I can‘t wait to read this! 7y
Cinfhen Nice 🙌🏻and great review 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Great review! 7y

I couldn't resist pulling out this book while eating my fav peach galette 🍑 Reading this for #booked18 #childhoodfavorite ... I had trouble picking between this, The BFG, and Matilda but this movie is so vivid in my mind I felt like I had to read the book again. Anyone else remember the live action part where James is eating that huge chunk of peach? Just me??? 😆

Cinfhen I really need to visit this pastry shop 😍the galette & coffee both look 😇😇😇 7y
Cinfhen And I totally remember Matilda 💜💜💜 7y
BarbaraJean This looks so good!! Roald Dahl was my favorite author when I was a kid. LOVED the BFG and Matilda—also: 7y
See All 12 Comments
saresmoore I remember that part! And Trunchbull eating decadent cake and Baloo devouring a stack of tropical fruits and Abu tearing into a stolen baguette... I think I was a hungry child. 🤔 7y
Mdargusch I think we watched Matilda many times but I don‘t remember this one. 7y
LeahBergen I need a bite of that galette! 🍑 7y
alisiakae Yum!! 7y
BarbaraBB I loved BFG and Matilda and some other Roald Dahl‘s but I don‘t know this one! 7y
Amanda.T This movie is totally bizarre, but we loved it! 🍑 7y
Reviewsbylola What exactly is peach galette? 7y
batsy Yay! Peach galette pic 😍🍑 I need one of those 😁 7y
emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola some amazing crusty flaky dough with a custardy filling, fresh peaches, and sugar on top. SO GOOD you have no idea 7y

My pick for #steampunk #booked18 but I can‘t review it, because this is also the book for my #lmpbc #groupT

Simona I‘m going to the post office tomorrow @ephemeralwaltz 😘 7y
ephemeralwaltz Intriguing! Can‘t wait. I‘ll be reading your pick this weekend 😅 7y
Simona @ephemeralwaltz I was very surprised ... in a good way 👍 7y

Cinfhen Oooh! Nice choice for #steampunk!!!! And I have this book 🙌🏻 @scripturient 💚 7y
Simona @Cinfhen Steampunk is not my genre, but this one is interesting and witty. Thanks to @oOArankaOo now I also want to read 7y
Cinfhen I did NOT like Bedlam stacks...I found it VERY SLOW GOING😣 7y
BookishMe @Cinfhen will bear this in mind... It's my TBR for #Peru. 7y
BookishMe This has been on my list for a long long time! I slowly understood what steampunk is after this entertaining read and I look forward to continuing the series 7y
Cinfhen Some people loved it @BookishMe 7y
BookishMe @Cinfhen yes, no book is same to every reader ;D being aware of varying opinions help to manage my own expectations 😊😊 7y
Mdargusch I tried this for #steampunk too. But ended up with a YA which seemed lighter and easier to get through. 7y
Simona @Cinfhen O, then maybe Watchmaker isn‘t for you .... I wouldn‘t say that the story is slow, but also isn‘t action packed one. Tension is built very nicely through the whole book and it have very interesting characters ... 7y
Simona @Mdargusch I also struggled with few chapters at the beginning, but then I was pulled into the story, mainly because of intriguing characters. 7y
Ranchan @Simona I'm also curious about her 2nd book! And glad you liked the book ❤ 7y

Bailedbailed

Airplane read #1....nope, not for me. I liked the premise; family drama, multigenerational, life‘s ups and downs but over 200 pages in and still nothing was happening that hooked me...as much as I wanted to care about the family (honestly, I don‘t remember their surname) I bailed. It was my first Anne Tyler and probably my last.

Cinfhen I tried @Blaire @mrp27 🤷🏼‍♀️ 7y
ReadingRuby Sorry to hear you didn‘t like it! This is one of the next up on my TBR.. Although I might push it further down. I read another Anne Tyler that was just a so-so 7y
jhod @rubyhanmer keep going past a certain point - there is a big plot change. It is gentle but I liked it :-) 7y
See All 47 Comments
ReadingRuby @jhod I will definitely give it a go! 7y
jhod @Cinfhen @rubyhanmer have tried other Ann Tyler's and didn't like them as much. Horses for courses!! 7y
Cinfhen @jhod please share twist under spoiler...I‘m curious but I‘ve already returned book on my OverDrive account 😝 7y
Cinfhen @rubyhanmer I can‘t explain what was bothering me exactly but it was slow in the unraveling and I was getting bored...hope you have a better reading experience 😊 7y
Leftcoastzen If you ever try another one I would suggest 7y
Cathythoughts I liked the first one or two of her books ( ?) but I think I just out grew her writing- she wasn‘t for me anymore 🤷‍♀️ 7y
TrishB I would be so disappointed having 2 dodgy books on the plane! 7y
Cinfhen Ha, it did suck @TrishB and I was too exhausted to try a third... 7y
Cinfhen Thanks @Leftcoastzen was that book made into a film??? 7y
Leftcoastzen @Cinfhen yes, It was. I liked the film too. I‘m not a Tyler super fan or anything ,haven‘t read all of her books, but I liked that one quite a bit .Quiet quirkiness. 7y
Leftcoastzen @Cinfhen and what @TrishB said, argh. 7y
Cinfhen I think I saw the film, it‘s vaguely familiar @Leftcoastzen I remember mostly liking it... I‘ll keep that book in mind...thanks😊 7y
Tamra I bailed too, but I don‘t even remember why! 😝 (edited) 7y
alisiakae Oh no! Anne Tyler is hit or miss with me. This one is on my TBR this year, for the #pop18 challenge. I picked up a copy at Costco when it was first published. 7y
cathysaid Yep, this one was a bail for me as well. 7y
Cinfhen I wanted to use this for #pop18 too @4thhouseontheleft now I need a new book with BLUE in the title 😝 7y
Cinfhen I‘m glad I‘m in #goodcompany @Tamra @cathysaid but now I‘m curious about the #plottwist that @jhod mentioned.... 7y
Reviewsbylola Damn, you really struck out with your airplane reading! 7y
Deblovestoread Oh no, it‘s been sitting on the tbr stack moving slowly to the top. It is now reshuffled to the bottom. Will it ever see the light of day? Lol 7y
Mdargusch I bailed on this too! 7y
emilyhaldi Boo 👎🏻 7y
jhod Unless you already got to that point and didn't think it was worthy of being called a twist! 😂 I think it might be worth reading to that point as it does change emphasis afterwards... but there are too many books out there to worry really! I hope you enjoy your next one! 😗 7y
jhod Oh just saw your comment. Sure! The mother dies. 7y
jhod I've never done a spoiler before so hope I've done it right! 7y
mrp27 Well that's a bummer but glad you gave it a go! 7y
Blaire Yes, sorry you didn‘t enjoy it, tho I don‘t think this one is a great representation of her work. I didn‘t finish it either but intend to go back. Accidental tourist or breathing lessons prob better to start with. Also get that there are lots of books to read and she may not be the author for you. Her books are definitely not plot driven. 7y
BookwormM This made the Man Booker longlist a few years back and I could see nothing to justify its inclusion 7y
BarbaraBB Hmmm, i‘ve got this on my tbr as well. I even planned to read it for #booked18... well maybe I should reconsider. 7y
Cinfhen Ha!! You did great @jhod Did the Mom die due to an accident caused by her early dementia?? How did the death effect Denny? 7y
Cinfhen For every bail there‘s a pick so please don‘t skip this because of me @BarbaraBB @Kdgordon88 7y
Cinfhen Yea, bummer for my airplane pick but it still killed 1 1/2 hours out of 22 🤪😝😂 @Suet624 @Reviewsbylola @mrp27 @Blaire @emilyhaldi @Mdargusch @bookwormM 7y
Deblovestoread Not to worry. It's been languishing on the tbr for along time which already shows a lack of interest on my part. 7y
jhod Yes exactly - she went wandering and got in a traffic accident. To be honest what stayed with me (it's been well over a year...) was you went backwards and saw how the mum and dad got together - can't remember names 😂 - and how she wasn't actually that into him and how changed she was by settling down and having kids. Denny kept being a bit of a brat as far as I can remember! 7y
CarolynM Don't give up on her altogether. I absolutely adore Breathing Lessons and I've liked some of her others a lot too, but hated The Accidental Tourist and couldn't finish Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant. All her stories are about family, I think you just need to find the ones you can relate to. 7y
Cinfhen Oh , that saves the book somewhat @jhod but it might be awhile until I try this author again @CarolynM 7y
alisiakae Have you read The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison? 7y
Cinfhen No, good one @4thhouseontheleft 😄 7y
Centique I vote for that one too @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft it‘s gripping for a great literary read. 👍 7y
Blaire Is wonderful. Agree with @4thhouseontheleft 7y
alisiakae @Centique @Blaire Yes! It‘s been a while since I read it, but it is one of those books that sticks with you. Definitely recommend it! 7y
Blaire @4thhouseontheleft @centique @cinfhen agreed. I read this in high school I think - so over 20 years ago - and I still remember it, which is really unusual for me. Or I should say I remember the contours of it. (edited) 7y
L_auren Literally nothing ever happened in this boring book!!! Great choice to bail 7y
Cinfhen Whew!! Thanks @L_auren hope you‘re having an awesome vacation 😁can‘t wait for your ToB round!!!!!! 7y

I‘m on a self-imposed #bookbuyingban at the moment. I‘m going for 3 months (until April 4th), but the struggle is soooo real right now! 😩

Any tips for how to survive the next 6 weeks?

#strugglingbookworm #everydayImstruggling

Suet624 Go to the library. 7y
Sace I keep a simple tracker in my journal. It's very satisfying to color in the square every day I don't buy a book. 7y
Jess_Read_This As a habitual failure in self imposed book buying bans... I have very little good advice to offer. 😂 Just my commiserations on how real the struggle is!! I do try to increase my library card usage though for the months I‘m trying not to buy myself books. (edited) 7y
See All 31 Comments
ephemeralwaltz Do not enter a bookstore😂 Especially if you're telling yourself that you won't buy anything. 7y
Mdargusch I have failed at my book buying ban while on vacation. However, I am doing the #mounttbrchallenge and using the books I own for the #booked18 and #pop2018 challenges. I have a journal list of the books I‘ve used off my shelves for challenges and it‘s so satisfying to see that list grow! 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I tried this and i couldn‘t do it!!! And I‘m keeping my fingers crossed 🤞🏻 for you!! 😘😘 7y
CoffeeCatsBooks I wish you luck! I have never been successful at one. 7y
ralexist Frequent your local library :) If I bought every book I wanted to read I'd be out thousands upon thousands of dollars per year. I only own those I truly love and which will be re-reads and favorites forever. With the library I can enjoy everything I want and then the book goes back to be shared and enjoyed by someone else. (Somewhat biased opinion here as I am a librarian, but the premise still holds true) (edited) 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘m on a ban too! We can get through it together?! 7y
Cinfhen Stay off Litsy 😩😩😩😩😩 7y
Cinfhen No, don‘t!!!!! 7y
minkyb Sending strength! 7y
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen you couldn‘t keep me off even if you tried 😘 I would rather suffer here than be without all of you guys ❤️ 7y
Kalalalatja @thegirlwiththelibrarybag yes! Always good to have someone to lean on 💪💪 7y
Kalalalatja @Suet624 @Jess_Read_This @ralexist I do use my library for audiobooks, but I‘m a buyer, not a borrower 😄 but I have so many unread books at the moment, so it shouldn‘t be a problem getting books to read. I just want new ones too 😳😄 7y
Kalalalatja @ephemeralwaltz sound advice! 😂 @RestlessFickleBookHoarder @Mdargusch good idea with a journal or tracking system. Then I can at least see how good I‘m doing! 😄 7y
Kalalalatja @minkyb @CoffeeCatsBooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘m going to need all the strength and luck I can get, so thank you! 7y
Cinfhen I would miss you toooooooo much @Kalalalatja 😘😘😘😘I like @Mdargusch & @RestlessFickleBookHoarder suggestions....there is satisfaction in tracking your progress ❤️ 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag We can totally manage a 6 week ban (I may have bought a book in my lunch break but it‘s cold turkey from now) 7y
Q84 If you really feel the need go to the library and leave with a pile of books! Also ask friends if they have any books they are willing to part with. But definitely stay away from bookstores and bookracks! You can so do this! 7y
Kalalalatja @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I believe in us! Although I‘m going to Iceland at the end of March, and I can‘t really promise not to buy anything thing. But it doesn‘t count if I‘m on vacation, right? 😄 7y
Kalalalatja @Q84 I‘m definitely staying away from bookstores! It is those emails that land in my inbox each day with offers from online bookstores that are the real trouble! 7y
Librariana I'm on a ban until June, so I hear ya! 😁😊 But I actually find it empowering to walk into a bookstore and tell myself a couple of things: 1) I have tons of these at home I haven't read (133, to be exact) 2) They (books) will be here waiting for me to come save them when I return in June (lol!) 3) I don't *need* to buy anything. And then I just walk out 😄 And keep walking because otherwise, I'll turn around and the temptation is REAL! 7y
Q84 If you can stay away from the emails, if not maybe you could make them be redirected to a special folder and not in your main feed? 7y
erzascarletbookgasm Ha! Hide those offers emails! Spam them (temporarily 😉). Even if you avoid bookstores, bring just enough money for grocery shopping! Don‘t stay away from Litsy, we‘ll miss you! And good luck with the ban. 7y
cobwebmoth You'll be receiving 3 books in the mail that I ordered for you, so you'll still get that new book feeling between now and then. 😊 7y
Kalalalatja @Librariana haha this is awesome! I wish I had your strength 💪👏💪👏 7y
batsy I have never succeeded... But you can do it!!! 😂💪🏽 7y
Kalalalatja @Q84 that might work! Good idea 👏👏 @erzascarletbookgasm luckily my grocery store is nowhere near a bookstore, so I‘m safe there! 😄 and I would miss you all to much if I tried to stay away! @cobwebmoth trust me, I‘m so looking forward to those books 😂 7y
Kalalalatja @batsy I have too. I have made a bet with my boyfriend, and I refuse to loose! 😄 7y
