This story about three girls and a governess go missing while at Hanging Rock, Australia, couldn‘t keep my attention. Partly because I was not sure what genre I was reading... horror? Mystery? I couldn‘t stop myself skimming much of the endless details to get to the end. I did laugh about Mrs Appleyard though, quite a character!

(Pic: A hotel room in Switzerland on our way to the Alps. The church bells kept tolling although the night 😳)

Caroline2 Yeah I was underwhelmed by this one too. 🤷‍♀️ 4w

MicheleinPhilly This reminds me of the episode of Gilmore Girls when Luke and Lorelei break into the church to break the bells to shut them up. 4w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Ahh. I see you read the regular edition. I think, here, in Australia - it has the air of an urban legend - and was cleverly marketed when it was published so people sort of do believe that it actually happened. Plus the movie was quite haunting - the girls in their white dress - and the cry of Miranda Miranda... (the extra chapter is not good - it explains the girls disappearance - and the book is much improved by it not having been included) (edited) 4w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Cathythoughts - I‘d also recommend the movie (1975) - then you get the full effect of the setting - Hanging Rock. 4w

I finished this book last night but I wanted some time to think about it before I posted a review. This is unlike any book I have ever read. It's a mystery but it's not about the mystery. If I can offer some advice, don't read the foreward and don't read the "lost chapter". It's so much better when you don't know.

I‘ve got a sick kid today (nothing serious, slight fever from ear infection) and she is very concerned that I‘m writing in my book. 😆 I realized quite quickly that I had to explain that usually it‘s NOT ok to write in books. I absolutely adored this book! My students always ask why they should read the classics when they already know the plot. This is the reason why. I was awestruck by the atmosphere and the language! It was a bit slow at the beginning after the girls went missing, but in the middle everything was just hurtling towards the dreadful end. One event after another and it was all so crazy. 5 lovely and sinister 🌟 for this book!

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I think I should give this one another chance! I bailed at the slow beginning, but if it picks up later . . . 4mo

A disturbing, odd tale about 3 schoolchildren and a teacher who disappear while on a school picnic. There are many dark undertones contrasting with the prim and proper life in a Victorian ‘young ladies‘ school. I don‘t usually like it when storylines are left unresolved but I expected it with this book, so didn‘t mind and I‘ve been thinking about it all day....

Thanks Cathy for this fab book!

Cinfhen Did you think the headmistress killed Sara?? What did you think happened to the other girls and their teacher?? 4mo
squirrelbrain I definitely think the headmistress killed Sara - I think there‘s some weird back story there about why she ended up in Aus... no idea about what happened to the others... what do you think @cinfhen? 😘 4mo
Cinfhen I initially thought the three seniors had some sort of suicide pact but than Irma showed up alive and untouched. And I didn‘t get the whole thing between Mike & Irma. Did Mike have a thing for Albert??? Did Mike see something?? Did Albert play a role??? 4mo
Cinfhen And I read the last chapter that was written by the author but not published in the book, where the author has the girls entering a time warp with the math teacher but the vortex sort of expelled Irma which is why she had a concussion and no memory of the events. It‘s also why all the watches stopped working at the picnic. And Edith, the younger girl was so freaked out from the vortex that she raced down the rock. It‘s kind of out there 🤪 4mo
BarbaraBB Oow with all those spoilers this book seems great! I hope you will enjoy Station Eleven just as much 💕 4mo
Ruthiella Yes! I like how this book lingers...what happened? Will we ever find an answer to suit us?🤔 4mo
TrishB Loved Station Eleven 💕 4mo
squirrelbrain Exactly the same questions as you @Cinfhen , but with none of the answers! (Although I do think Mike had a thing for Albert) Definitely don‘t like that time warp idea... but it explains some stuff 🤪🤷‍♀️ 4mo

It feels as if this book, and its film adaptions, are so well-known that I was sure I knew the story, but really all I knew about was the first couple of chapters, and I‘m not giving any spoilers in saying that a group of school girls go missing during a school outing the Hanging Rock.

Lindsay‘s writing is very atmospheric, and the storyline is intriguing, and very sad (almost distressing) in places

TheEllieMo I read on (I think) Wikipedia, that Lindsay had written a chapter in which the mystery of the disappearance of the schoolgirls was revealed, but her publisher advised her to omit it from the published novel. It was subsequently published separately in 5mo

This is one of those books where I loved the atmosphere of what was going on and the premise. I enjoyed reading this but it also did one of my pet peeves.
All the good characters are beautiful and the bad characters are ugly, I forgive this for certain time periods even though it grates on me but this was written in the 60s so I‘m less forgiving of the trope in this case.
It‘s a pick as mostly I enjoyed when I wasn‘t rolling my eyes.

The story begins with the disappearance of three students and a teacher from the picnic at Hanging Rock. This classic is unlike any mystery you can imagine. Three girls and a teacher mysteriously vanished from a girls‘ boarding school field trip. A search and police investigation ensued, and other characters in the story tried to unravel the mystery. More significantly is how they cope with the disappearance, and how the bizarre incident changed the course of their lives forever. The picnic scene is described with beautiful dreamlike narrative. ?

erzascarletbookgasm ..(cont.). The whole story is a surreal mix of ambiguity and haunting mystery. I‘m going to search for the 1975 film, said to be a great success, and also the 2018 tv series, which gives a backstory to some characters. 8mo

I sped through the rest of this and completed my goal of wanting to finish it before the end of March! Solid mystery at an Australian boarding school where 3 girls vanish from a picnic on Valentine‘s Day. I thought the ambiguous ending really works for this story, though I am usually a fan of having no loose ends. Solid 3 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pageturner.Cliffhanger If you want to read the end, Lindsay did write one - the controversial Chapter 18. Her editor persuaded her not to publish, and she agreed, but she wanted it made available after her death. The last chapter is easily Googled. It‘s a lot wilder than you might imagine! 10mo

Ethereal, haunting and mysterious. A perfect blend of mystery with a vague sense of horror. The writing is right up there with Daphne du Maurier, Shirley Jackson, Josephine Tey and Charlotte Armstrong.

Popped into town this morning whilst waiting for my boyfriend to go on his lunch break. I had another book themed gift voucher from Christmas to spend. I decided to browse the classics section. One of my bookish goals is to read one classic a month. I'm looking forward to starting these at some point.

CarolynM The Enchanted April ❤️❤️❤️ 12mo
SealedWithInk @CarolynM is it good? I had only heard of it from one of the booktubers I watch. She has it on her TBR 12mo
CarolynM It's lovely. So is the film😍 12mo

I loved this! What an intriguing mystery! I knew from the back of the book that it was about the disappearance of several girls at a picnic, but I assumed they got lost or kidnapped or ran into a wild animal—you know, something traditional. There is NOTHING traditional about the disappearances! The book has so many layers—the strange disappearances, of course, but also the effects of them on the people around them. And the ending! What a surprise!

Reviewsbylola I‘ve had this on my TBR for so long! 13mo

On Monday night my Essington Building Book Club had their Xmas meeting. We all put a book in the centre of the table then pulled a different one out. I got this gem. Anyone watched the series? We all brought a dish from a Donna Hay cookbook. Mine was pannacotta.

gradcat I saw the 1975 movie directed by Peter Weir...it was so good! 14mo
LapReader I was only small when I watched that @gradcat I just thought it was weird. 14mo
gradcat @LapReader You‘re not the only one—all of my friends thought it was weird, too. I just found it so ethereal & otherworldly.... 14mo

Cricket and I are bailing on this one - it just got too slow in the middle and didn‘t have enough momentum to keep my attention. Too bad because I had really wanted to read this for a long time. 😐

Cinfhen Awww, I had high hopes for this one too! 14mo
jenniferajanes I‘ve heard a lot about that one too. I didn‘t buy it when it was on sale. Maybe it was the reviews that made me question it? Yours confirms it. 😢 14mo
Tamra @Cinfhen give it a try. The first third was engaging. It really could just be that I‘m so busy wrapping up a course I‘m taking that my brain wasn‘t up for anything that requires a little bit of tenacity. 14mo

A predictable but inescapable choice for #underarock. I loved this tense, unsettling story of three girls who go missing during a school picnic #NoFemmeBer @Cinfhen @Billypar

Small shame: I still haven't seen this film or read the included original book. Bought more on reputation & 'cause it looked nice.

I‘ve been wanting to get this one a long time! Woot!

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I got it too! I‘d never heard of it but couldn‘t resist after reading the description. 1y
Tamra I‘ve heard about it for years and it‘s very intriguing. Apparently speculation abounds as what really happened. A movie was made but I haven‘t seen it. (edited) 1y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @tamra @LeahBergen I‘m home sick today, so may take advantage of the quiet house and read this one now! 1y

Can we add another month of fall so I can get through all my fall reading? Really wanted to get through all of these but know I won‘t and am having trouble deciding which comes next. Are there any here you particularly loved or didn‘t?

TrishB The Thirteenth Tale is great 👍🏻 1y

Mehso-so

I liked the writing: there was a strong sense of atmosphere and place. I liked the way the stories unfolded.

I didn't like that there was never an explanation or resolution to the missing persons case which was more inexplicable due to one of the teachers also going missing. The (unrelated?) fate of Sara made me sad and angry.

Also, Mrs Appleyard is the most horrid woman I've encountered since Mrs Norris. 😠

Andrew65 Loved the film. 1y
bookandbedandtea @Andrew65 I didn't realize there was a film! Maybe I'll try to find it. 1y
CarolynM I agree , the fact that the mystery goes unresolved is really frustrating. It's such an eerie place though, so it kind of makes sense that we're left not knowing what to think about the story. The film is beautiful and atmospheric @Andrew65 There's a new TV adaptation that was shown here earlier this year. I don't know if it has been picked up internationally 1y
