Necessary Lies | Diane Chamberlain
Bestselling author Diane Chamberlain delivers a breakout book about a small southern town fifty years ago, and the darkestand most hopefulplaces in the human heart After losing her parents, fifteen-year-old Ivy Hart is left to care for her grandmother, older sister and nephew as tenants on a small tobacco farm. As she struggles with her grandmother's aging, her sister's mental illness and her own epilepsy, she realizes they might need more than she can give. When Jane Forrester takes a position as Grace County's newest social worker, she doesn't realize just how much her help is needed. She quickly becomes emotionally invested in her clients' lives, causing tension with her boss and her new husband. But as Jane is drawn in by the Hart women, she begins to discover the secrets of the small farmsecrets much darker than she would have guessed. Soon, she must decide whether to take drastic action to help them, or risk losing the battle against everything she believes is wrong. Set in rural Grace County, North Carolina in a time of state-mandated sterilizations and racial tension, Necessary Lies tells the story of these two young women, seemingly worlds apart, but both haunted by tragedy. Jane and Ivy are thrown together and must ask themselves: how can you know what you believe is right, when everyone is telling you it's wrong?

PROMPT: WITH PHYSICIAN

Jane, a physician's wife, was the new social worker dealing with the Hart and Jordan families.

NECESSARY LIES is the perfect title because lies were necessary for the characters to survive.  It is heart wrenching yet informative as you follow the characters through their inadequate, restricted days.

I am glad that a friend of mine recommended this book. It was a very good read. I found this book to be very educational. I‘d never heard of the Eugenics Program before. I can‘t image the types of things that took place between the 1930s-1970s happening today. I found it hard to put this book down at times. Diane Chamberlain is certainly a wonderful author.

I totally forgot to post my review: I loved this book and it had me hooked the entire time. If I could‘ve, I would‘ve read this book in one sitting. I love books that give me controversial things to think about and this definitely delivered. I can‘t believe it‘s actually based on true events. How horrible. #lmpbc

About to start this gem finally. // I have a question though about NetGalley. Does anybody know an easy way to be able to move the ARCs that don't directly download onto kindle to my kindle? I heard there was a way to change the document and then download it onto the kindle anyways. Can anybody help me with that? I'm really struggling with reading them on my phone. #netgalley #arc #help

BookwormM I always send them to my kindle email address you have to add Netgalley as an approved email address first. 4y
TheShaggyShepherd @bookwormm Even the ones that don‘t have a kindle download button? The protected PDFs? (edited) 4y

Another 5 Star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ book from #DianeChamberlain.

She writes like no one else. Brings history into her writing to make these stories real (all while educating), adds just enough mystery to keep you thinking & turning the pages, has you loving all the characters. And it flows seamlessly.

This particular story took place in the 1960‘s. Told from two point of views (one being a social worker), & covered the Eugenics Sterilization program.

Lcsmcat She will Skype with book clubs. Ours discussed Stolen Marriage with her and she was gracious and charming. 5y

This is one of the many reasons why I enjoy being involved in book clubs. I don't think I ever would have picked up Necessary Lies on my own, but it was a book club choice this month so I dug in. Wow, am I glad I did. My heart broke for the main protagonists and the situations they had to face, but it smiled for the strength and resiliency it took to overcome them. I highly recommend this story for all the historical fiction fans out there.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A shocking novel set in rural #NorthCarolina in 1960. Ivy's story will stay with you a long time. A time in history I have read little about, this novel will make you want to learn more about the Eugenics program. Social workers/State officials had the right to recommend forced sterilizations for someone with a disability. It's unbelievable to me that this went on until the year before I was born.

I had a difficult time with the main character at first. Even for 1960 she was too naive and too willing to settle for what was obviously a mistake. I came to like her more as it went on, but still felt like there was some facile writing for the sake of plot that was not true to life. But if it raises awareness of the Eugenics program that is worth some less than perfect prose. Three ⭐️ Balthazar isn‘t sure either. #littenkitten #catsoflitsy

I am so glad that the field of social work has progressed and evolved, and is no longer practiced like it was in this book! I love being a social worker, and I worked in child welfare for 3 years right out of school. This book reminded me how hard that first year in the field is. Making decisions that affect other people's entire life is not easy.

Any other fellow social workers out there? I normally avoid books that feature social workers. 1) I read to escape my real life 2) usually stories about social workers are super depressing 3) they often inaccurately represent social workers and what we do. But I've heard great things about this one, and it's Social Work month, so I will give it a shot!

🍷🍷🍷🍷 Cheers This story haunted me days after I finished. Set in fictional rural Grace County, NC, secrets are discovered when the Hart family & the new social worker cross paths. The most disturbing aspect of this book was to learn about the history of NC's eugenics program. What an awful demoralizing treatment of the less fortunate. It angered me how people in power made the decision to sterilize the powerless, poor & disabled. #spinesvines

With fictional characters and places the story is based on events that did happen in America during 1929 and 1975. It's an emotional rollercoaster of a read, one that has left me wanting to know more about the subject talked about in it. Well written with alternate chapters from two main characters in the past, but starting and ending with a character from present time. Excellent read!

Very surprising that this book is based on true events. Always shocked at some of the idiotic things that happened in history that someone thought was a good idea, in this case forcing sterilization on poor families and lying to them about it. Very good story telling and character development.
