Shadow Rising, The
Shadow Rising, The: Book Four of 'The Wheel of Time' | Robert Jordan
Now in development for TV! Since its debut in 1990, The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan has captivated millions of readers around the globe with its scope, originality, and compelling characters. The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, an Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow. The seals of Shayol Ghul are weak now, and the Dark One reaches out. The Shadow is rising to cover humankind. In Tar Valon, Min sees portents of hideous doom. Will the White Tower itself be broken? In the Two Rivers, the Whitecloaks ride in pursuit of a man with golden eyes, and in pursuit of the Dragon Reborn. In Cantorin, among the Sea Folk, High Lady Suroth plans the return of the Seanchan armies to the mainland. In the Stone of Tear, the Lord Dragon considers his next move. It will be something no one expects, not the Black Ajah, not Tairen nobles, not Aes Sedai, not Egwene or Elayne or Nynaeve. Against the Shadow rising stands the Dragon Reborn... TV series update: "Sony will produce along with Red Eagle Entertainment and Radar Pictures. Rafe Judkins is attached to write and executive produce. Judkins previously worked on shows such as ABCs Agents of SHIELD, the Netflix series Hemlock Grove, and the NBC series Chuck. Red Eagle partners Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon will executive produce along with Radars Ted Field and Mike Weber. Darren Lemke will also executive produce, with Jordans widow Harriet McDougal serving as consulting producer." Bk7 of June was done a few days ago. I read it as a combo between audio and print, but my battered copy is too scared to be seen in public. I have a bit of restoration to do to it I think. It is 30yrs old & been borrowed and read.A lot! After the fall of the Stone of Tear, Rand, Mat, Egwene & Moiraine head into the Aiel Waste while Nynaeve, Elayne & Thom sail to Tanchico searching for the Black Ajah & a danger to the Dragon Reborn. One of my faves🙌

Great book! The sentence structures used by the author are a little different in some places so I had to re-read here and there to make sure I understood.

Finished book 4 of the Wheel of Time series. It was a little less compelling than the first 3, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Onward to book 5!

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legends. Legends fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose [...]. The wind was no the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.

Still struggling with memory & concentration problems from long covid, amongst other symptoms but the those two are REALLY affecting my reading & so to me are the worst of the bunch! Catching up on all my book reviews— bear with me.
I LOVE the Aiel, I LOVE Aviendha, I love the wise ones… I loved this book. This might be my second favorite of the series so far (how can you not love the first one the most? It‘s the start of the adventure!) Rand is getting more and more angsty, and I‘m tired of everyone dumping on Moiraine, but that‘s nothing new. 9/10

This has been my favorite so far, even though there were some things that I wish would've been explained further (even if the book was long enough as it is). Series pages read: 3134. Time read: 82 hours.

Really liked the second half of this book, so much action and excitement, I think this might be my favourite one in the series so far! Will take a break before continuing but I could just imagine some of the scenes playing out so dramatically in a tv show or movie! Excited for the show I am hoping it will be good.

The_Penniless_Author Just a warning- the next book, Fires of Heaven, is a real slog in places, but stick with it, because Lord of Chaos (book 6) is fantastic! 3y

My felt jacket‘s all done! I started with a Simplicity pattern from 1978, tailored the hell out of it so it drapes properly, and totally redesigned the pockets. Next, I‘ll redo my Yves Saint Laurent jacket and learn how to make trousers.

I‘m halfway through THE SHADOW RISING after a loooooong #audiowalk along the Greenway. While I‘m still loving the book overall, I do hate the gender dynamics and all the stereotypes. Sigh.

On the plus side, I‘m less bored with Perrin than I usually am! Hurray! Now, if only Faile didn‘t embody so much of the stuff I hate about the series…

BarbaraJean Ugh. The gender dynamics/stereotypes (and Faile!!) are what I found so maddening about these books. Also the number of times women are described as crossing their arms underneath their breasts. 🙄 Jordan is such a fantastic world builder, though—and there are some amazing character arcs by the end of the series. 3y
xicanti @BarbaraJean truth. I‘m especially excited to get to the point where Egwene harnesses her inner badass. 3y
humouress Ah yes. Faile. 🙄 (edited) 3y
See All 6 Comments
xicanti @humouress accurate. I somehow forgot how bad she is. 3y
jitteryjane724 This book in particular felt like fan fiction written by a 13 year old boy who is exploring what it means to feel attraction. It would explain why all the female characters are suddenly wearing such clingy, sheer dresses and have such prominent curves. And what girl wears a necklace between her breasts? Personally I just wear them around my neck...have I been doing this wrong for my whole life? (edited) 3y
xicanti @jitteryjane724 I think it‘d be really uncomfortable to wear a ring between your breasts unless they were very widely spaced. I get the sense Robert Jordan was unduly influenced by those things where people store stuff inside their bras, but he missed how it‘s better to tuck the thing to the SIDE than to jam it right down the middle. 3y

I made tomato swirl buns with Parmesan, as you do. They turned out really well but a touch too salty. Poop.

I‘m edging up on the halfway point with THE SHADOW RISING. I remembered it as the point where the series starts to sprawl a bit too much, but I‘m loving it. Yeah, it‘s big and some of it‘s probably not strictly necessary. but it‘s all interesting stuff. I‘m excited to keep on going. #audiobaking

AkashaVampie They look so good. RECIPE???? 3y
xicanti @Kimberlone thanks! 3y
See All 8 Comments
xicanti @AkashaVampie it‘s a hybrid recipe! I used a basic tangzhong dough (I like Kim-Joy‘s best) with 1tsp of basil added. Before the second prove, I rolled the dough up with a full recipe of Nigella Lawson‘s moonblush tomatoes (about 3/4 cup) and 1/2 cup Parmesan. Next time, I think I‘d cut the tomatoes down to only 1/2 cup and incorporate the cheese into the dough instead of rolling it in. 3y
Kimberlone @xicanti looks GBBO worthy! 3y
xicanti @Kimberlone I think Paul Hollywood would be pleased with the actual bread, but he‘d tell me to dial back the salt in the tomatoes next time. 3y

Bk4 of September, Bk13 of #LittensDressedInBlood & Bk2 of #AnyWayYouReadathon is done. And so is the last readathon! It‘s now the 13th here in Sydney, and I only managed 1 of my 3 goals😞. I only read 2 books instead of 3, neither of which was a #SciFiSeptember book but I read more than 20hrs🙌 At least I‘ve added Bk1 to this weeks #SuperSeptember #readathon & one more book down in my WOT reread. #ChunksterChallenge #ReadItAgainSam #BookspinBingo

Eggbeater Great reading time! You did great! 🎉 3y
Lizpixie @EadieB @Eggbeater thank you! It‘s not as if I have anything else to do, no kids at home, shops closed & going into Month3 of lockdown. Readings the only thing keeping me sane🤪 3y
Lizpixie @TheAromaofBooks I have few books that have lasted the moving and upheavals of the last 40+yrs, this series, the Magician trilogy by Raymond Feist, his Daughter of the Empire trilogy, the Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever series by Stephen Donaldson, some Anne McCaffreys & Dame Agathas, a few more, the rest are from the last 15yrs or so. I‘m planning on retiring my original WOT to a nice shelf in the library & buy the anniversary editions as released 3y
EadieB @Lizpixie Your lockdown sounds a bit excessive! Thank goodness for your books 📚 I would go crazy 😜 too if I ran out of books to read! 3y
Lizpixie @EadieB I‘m very much looking forward to October, hopefully restrictions will have lifted by then. THANK GOODNESS I was able to put aside the funds to order new copies (with updated covers!) of the Wheel of Time series for the library! 🎉🎉🎉 I was able to justify it because our copies were getting old and gross, and interest is ramping up due to the show coming out soon. But let's be honest...MY MAIN REASON WAS BECAUSE I HATE THE ORIGINAL COVERS - ESPECIALLY THIS ONE - WITH A BURNING FIERY PASSION! 😂🤣 Any book covers you feel that way about?

HeyT Have you seen the new Obit UK covers they are releasing. They're all landscapey and just ugh I'm jealous. The only downside is the show blurb. 3y
vivastory I've been collecting the box sets that TOR has recently reissued of mass market with new designs. I really like them 3y
Branwen @vivastory Are those the ones that have like solid color designs? I've seen those before at B&N and really like them! @HeyT Oooooh! NO! I haven't seen them! I need to go check them out! Are the UK only? 3y
vivastory Yeah, they've been releasing box sets with 3 volumes. I really like them. 3y
HeyT @Branwen As far as I know they are UK only. I think it's because Orbit US doesn't pub WoT in the US. I think Tor does the US run. 3y

#LittensDressedInBlood #Day10 #EnterSandman For this prompt I‘m going for my current book, though it‘s the WOT as a whole really. A big part of it is Tel‘aran‘rhiod, the World Of Dreams. It‘s a dream version of the world running parallel to theirs & dreamers are people who can step in and out of this world at will. Egwene joins the Aiel Wise Ones in the Waste to learn from them how to walk Tel‘aran‘rhiod safely. Excuse my poor battered book!

1. I'm assuming this is supposed to be for August 🙂 Between all the traveling I did and the size of the books I've been reading, that leaves me with only one completed book to choose from (tagged).
2. I think finishing books 5 and 6 of Wheel of Time is challenge enough for me 🥵

3y
The_Penniless_Author @TheSpineView No worries, it happens ? Like @Lsmoore43 said, I doubt anyone cares. I'm sure everyone knew what you meant anyway. As far as WoT, I know it's supposed to hit a real slow patch after book 6 (aka, "The Slog"), so hopefully I can power through to the end! 3y

Just when I was thinking, "Boy, are these WoT books long," along comes 1,000-page book 4 to show me that I had absolutely no idea. This book was everything that was good and bad about the previous ones, only more so. The pacing dragged in places; you could probably cut a couple hundred pages and not affect the story at all. It was also repetitive at times, even for WoT. (If Nynaeve "tugs at her braid" one more time, I swear I'll write a fanfic ?

The_Penniless_Author ...where she goes bald 😄). Still, I absolutely loved it. I think at this point it's safe to say the story has me hooked and I'll be seeing it through to the end. One thing about writing so exhaustively is that I feel like I know all these characters and need to see what happens to them. Guess I've got my next year of reading planned out for me. 3y
The_Penniless_Author A question for @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm and any other WoT fans- without getting into any spoilers, does the entire 14-book series deal with the Emond's Fielders' fight against Ba'alzamon, or does the story ever shift to other Ages? I assumed given the sheer length that the story would span thousands or even millions of years, but so far it's more like one year 😁 3y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Lol, the “braid tugging” and “skirt smoothing” is prevalent through the entire series. It‘s a bit of an in-joke with fans. 😅🤣 And (without giving anything away) yes, the story basically only follows the lifetime of the Emond‘s Field troupe but “technically” does shift into other Ages. 🤫😜 The core story is about these innocent village kids that shape the fate of an entire world. I‘m glad you‘re still enjoying it despite its shortcomings! ❤️ 3y
The_Penniless_Author @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Oh yeah, I forgot about the skirt smoothing! 😆 You know, in the end I can forgive recycling certain phrases over and over. It's hard enough to avoid repeating yourself in a 200-page book, let alone a 10,000+ page series. Maybe if GRRM were a little more repetitive we'd finally have an end to A Song of Ice and Fire. 3y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm 🤣😂🤣😂 3y

#TarotTakeover #TheHermit

When @Meaw_catlady and @ErinSueMreads drew a card that symbolizes change and personal discovery, I thought of the Wheel of Time series. At the beginning of the series, the villagers of Emond‘s Field are in over their heads, but by this volume the characters have grown so much. Rand is ready to stop running from his responsibilities, Mat is no longer as selfish as he was in the beginning, and Egwene has matured so much.

DaveGreen7777 P.S. I used the ebook cover for the image, as the original mass paperback cover for this volume was terrible and didn‘t even depict a scene that actually happened in the book. @Branwen will back me up on how bad the book‘s original cover was! 😂🤣 4y

Branwen Also, great choice for this tarot prompt! It really is AMAZING to think of how much both Mat and Egwene change over the course of the story! Unlike my girl Nynaeve, who remains snarky and ill tempered throughout the entire series! 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂👌💖 4y
Branwen @DaveGreen7777 I will NEVER STOP complaining about how bad that cover is! NEVER! 😁 4y
DaveGreen7777 @Branwen Awww, thank you, Becky! 😊 Yeah, Mat and Egwene show a lot of growth by this volume, and one of my favorite moments will always be when Rand reflects on who he‘s becoming and takes a moment to “remember a shepherd named Rand Al Thor”! 😭 4y
DaveGreen7777 @Branwen And yes... Nynaeve remains her hot-headed self... and we love her for it! 🤣🤣🤣 4y

Why did I agree to read a 14 book series when I have a million other books to read? #wheeloftime #toomanybooks

MsMelissa LOL. I‘m stuck on book six! 4y
AllisonM89 @Book_Fiend_Melissa I actually took a break from the books back in March, but I figure I should try to slowly get through them since I am borrowing all 14 of them... lol
4y
Sace The Great Hunt was fabulous and for me it was downhill from there. I don't even think I made it to book six. 😔 Full disclosure - fantasy is not my jam. 4y
AllisonM89 @Sace I read mostly fantasy and, while I'm enjoying the books, I have very mixed feelings about them. I've never been 4 books into a book series in which I'm enjoying the books, but not particularly invested in any of the main characters, which is really really strange... 4y
Sace My husband was reading this series, but dropped it after a while and hasn't gone back. He said he might since Brian Sanderson (?) finished it up. He felt like everything started to drag. And I'm assuming that since he was able to walk away he didn't feel invested either. 4y

DaveGreen7777 @Branwen I know, right?! Such an exciting book, and yet the cover is such a snooze fest! 😴 5y
Branwen @DaveGreen7777 I seriously think that the person who came up with covers had never read the series...or even knew what they were about! 🤣😂 I have to agree with you and say that this is also my favorite book in the series, well, tied with Lord of Chaos! Awh man, I see why so many people say this book is one of the best in the series. The first 100 pages were a bit slow but once it kicked off, the action was great. My only complaint is that we meet so many people. This book was the first time I felt completely overwhelmed. I‘m just trusting Jordan to see me through his creation. #BuddyReadWOT

Geeklet @vivastory Not yet but I think I‘m going to need it soon. I must say “Who the f*** is that?!?!” at least once an hour while reading. 5y

Plugging along with a Gravy to keep me company. She had her vaccines today so she‘s not feeling great. A good cuddle at the foot of my chair is just what she needs. #BuddyReadWOT

Serotonin Is this series truly still going on? 😲 5y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @Serotonin Nope. It's complete at 14 books. I'm just doing a re-read. 😛 5y
