Peyton Place
Peyton Place | Grace Metalious
When Grace Metalious's debut novel about the dark underside of a small, respectable New England town was published in 1956, it quickly soared to the top of the bestseller lists. A landmark in twentieth-century American popular culture, Peyton Place spawned a successful feature film and a long-running television series-the first prime-time soap opera. Contemporary readers of Peyton Place will be captivated by its vivid characters, earthy prose, and shocking incidents. Through her riveting, uninhibited narrative, Metalious skillfully exposes the intricate social anatomy of a small community, examining the lives of its people -- their passions and vices, their ambitions and defeats, their passivity or violence, their secret hopes and kindnesses, their cohesiveness and rigidity, their struggles, and often their courage. This new paperback edition of Peyton Place features an insightful introduction by Ardis Cameron that thoroughly examines the novel's treatment of class, gender, race, ethnicity, and power, and considers the book's influential place in American and New England literary history.

#IndelibleMoments #Grace published in September of 1956 , it rocketed up the bestseller list. When this edition was published in 65 it probably was the bestselling paperback of all time.It was banned , it‘s a book you hid from your parents! It was a film , it was a TV show .I read it as a youngster and definitely hid it from my parents.😂This old paperback in nice shape.

vivastory David Trinidad wrote a book of haiku about Peyton Place 😂 2y
Leftcoastzen @vivastory that‘s hilarious! May have to check it out. 2y
LeahBergen I read this as a teen. I was expecting it to be much nastier. 🤣 2y

This read led to a very interesting conversation in one of my book clubs this week. So many things to discuss in this book: characters, economics, religion and more. We even discussed zoning laws because of this book. I can imagine that it was quite scandalous for the 50s (when it was first published).

I adore the 1960s show Peyton Place and this has been on my TBR forever. I decided to grab the #audiobook when I saw it was narrated by one of the show‘s cast members. I sped through this 16-hour audiobook. It‘s quite scandalous for the time period and was on banned book lists for awhile. It‘s small-town drama at its finest and imo is a great character study. It‘s a bit different from the show, which is set in the 60s. The book came out in 1956 ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 And when I realized the book was actually set in the late 30s/early 40s, I was even more impressed & can just imagine the scandal it caused when it was released. The author doesn‘t sugar coat anything and deals with a lot of hard topics, including abortion, a child born out of wedlock who‘s mother went to such great lengths to paint the picture of being a widow when her married lover died that she fudged her daughter‘s birthday by a whole year ⬇️ 3y
JenlovesJT47 There‘s also familial rape and a murder trial which will just break your heart for poor Selena Cross. The 1957 movie stuck closer to the book and I‘m looking forward to a rewatch since I haven‘t seen it in years. You will get sucked into the lives of this group of small-town New Englanders and I found it very hard to put down. The narrator did a fabulous job. I‘d highly recommend this to lovers of historical fiction and I think the audiobook is ⬇️ 3y
JenlovesJT47 The best way to go. I‘m really looking forward to watching the show again (all 514 episodes!). It‘s drama, but very well-done and realistic. I‘m looking forward to reading the sequel and various spin-offs. 5⭐️ Highly recommended! 3y

“You wonder too much about Peyton Place,” said Mike. It‘s just a town, Allison, like any other town. We have our characters, but so does New York and so does every other town and city.”

I think that‘s what I loved about this book - a typical New England town but the author shows us the secrets behind closed doors and how those secrets weave the people in the town together. I now need to read the sequel.

I think my favorite part of this book is imagining the scandal it caused in the 50‘s. I‘ll bet this is one book EVERYONE wanted to read. This is a pick for me, but just barely. The racism bothered me, and the old men talk I found annoying. Story was fascinating though and I‘d definitely be up for the sequel!
#peytonplace

Cinfhen It‘s weird because I was MUCH MORE put off by the racism in Gone With The Wind. If anything the lack of diversity in this book was much more shocking. I can‘t recall a single black character or reference even... I do think the author stereotyped the small town New Englander‘s as being very backwater, almost dim-witted. 6y
Bklover @Cinfhen wasn‘t Samuel Peyton African American? I thought he was. Which I found weird in the context of the story. Maybe I misunderstood. 6y
Bklover @Cinfhen The frequent use of the n-word bothered me too. Kept pulling me out of the story. 6y
See All 10 Comments
Cinfhen Yes! He was ( duh, Cindy!!!) but I hardly thought of him as a character but you‘re right. The N word was used a few times and it‘s always very jarring 6y
KellyHunsakerReads Samuel Peyton is African American 6y
TrishB My copy arrived today. But have been side tracked!! 6y
rubyslippersreads I hated the racism, and the horrible story Doc Swain told the young nurse made me unable to like him as much as I had before that point in the book. 6y
Cathythoughts I really enjoyed this one. I thought for its time & extreme popularity, it was quite radical. Not sure I want to read the sequel though. It‘s almost like this was enough. 6y
Bklover @Cathythoughts I know what you mean. A lot of times the sequel just screws everything up. 6y

Like @Cinfhen I found a lot of these scandals different than I expected. I‘m giving it a so-so because, while it‘s a pick for unputdownability, it‘s a pan for some of the extra-sordid stuff. Also, I‘ll never get over what happened to poor Cordelia! 😢 #peytonplace My ebook didn‘t have an introduction, but I‘d certainly like to read this one by India Knight.

Cathythoughts I agree about it being unputdownable... but I thought it was true to life as well .... sordid , yes . But also true , I thought. I‘m not sure about the Cordelia reference 😬.. I missed something there ...... ?? ! 6y
rubyslippersreads @Cathythoughts When Joey sells his sheep to the butcher, the butcher says, “Even Cordelia?” which I assume was Joey‘s best-loved sheep. 6y
Cathythoughts Ah ok. Thankyou ! I did miss that. He really loved those sheep. I remember Cordelia well from King Lear ... your youngest daughter does not love thee least. .. Thankyou , I get it now ❤️ (edited) 6y

rubyslippersreads @Mdargusch That was extremely bizarre. 6y
TrishB My copy arrived today but I have been thrown off reading by HAVING to read the new John Boyne......🤷‍♀️ 6y
Cinfhen I‘m still confused by that cellar scene @Mdargusch 🧐🤨😳 6y
Cinfhen I love your graphics and I agree, a bit sordid but I thought it was an interesting peek into very early pre-feminist movement. Not too many people have mentioned the school principal...what do u think about him?? He didn‘t strike me as the type of guy you‘d find in the 30‘s or the 50‘s for that matter. 6y
Mdargusch I‘m just at the part where the new principal arrives. @Cinfhen (edited) 6y
rubyslippersreads @Cinfhen I find it interesting that they changed the principal‘s name to something less “ethnic” for the movie and TV show. 6y
Cinfhen I didn‘t know that @rubyslippersreads I‘m always surprised by these “subtle “ ( NOT so subtle changes) in the introduction it stated that the publisher made the author change Selena‘s father to her step-father. Which alters the book in a VERY specific manner! The implication being it would be TOO SCANDALOUS if the character was her biological father 😾 6y
rubyslippersreads BTW, if anyone wants to watch the old movie, it‘s on YouTube. I started to watch last night, but realized I was kind of “Peytoned out.” 😄 All the “kids” were older than at the beginning of the book (high school seniors), but all the actors playing them looked to be in their mid-20s or older. 😄 6y
rubyslippersreads @Cinfhen Ugh. Like that made things better. 😏 6y

Managed to finish this book today. Not at all what I expected - I always assumed the secrets of Peyton Place were petty & tawdry BUT this was a whole different can of worms!!! I can imagine the scandal this book caused in the 1950s similar to the scandal To Kill A MockingBird must have caused. Fabulous characters who felt like real neighbors you‘d meet walking down Elm Street. Kudos to the author for making this book feel modern 60 years later.

Cathythoughts @Cinfhen yes ! To this book ! What a story... Selena & the Doc , I will never forget, such powerful writing about courage. I think this is timeless in its own way ... Thankyou for this ... I would never have thought of reading this book. Loved the truth & heaviness of the stories & the courage & the hope ... you can see how this worked ( in a very toned down way ) for tv. The cliffhangers .... Great stuff 6y

I‘m really enjoying this book! It‘s a good blend of innocence & evil and just enough spice to keep the pages turning. I didn‘t realize it‘s set in the late 1930‘s it seemed more “modern”. What are your initial impressions @Bklover @Cathythoughts @rubyslippersreads @Mdargusch ???? I know you haven‘t started yet @CarolynM @TrishB but I‘m curious to hear your thoughts as well🤗❣️❣️

Cathythoughts I love it ! It‘s a great read with some great characters... Selena , Allison , Constance , Dr Swain ( ❤️) & so many more... the new principal! A page turner .. (edited) 6y
Cinfhen I agree @Cathythoughts ❣️❣️I like that it‘s focusing on the “children” of Peyton Place and not just the adults. I‘m also surprised how many families lost wives/mothers to death through child birth. 6y

Cathythoughts @CarolynM @Cinfhen sorry the SK reference was me getting over excited & googling ... In the intro it says one of the characters is abused ( so maybe some of the writers own history here ?) as Dolores Claiborne is about abuse ( I think ) ... and SK May have based that book ( Dolores Claiborne) on Metalious . It‘s only the small town mentality & the New England setting, where I saw the similarity ...... it won‘t be like Stephen King (edited) 6y

Day 6 of #requiredreadingredo I don't think I was ever banned by my parents from reading a book, which is awesome! So I am going with a book that my grandma told me was seriously banned when she was growing up. After reading it, I totally understand why. A lot was going on in Peyton Place!
#julyphotochallenge
@ErinSueG @WhiskeyMistress

Erinsuereads This one has come up so many times!! I feel like if you add a small New England town to anything it‘s going to instantly be banned 😂😂😂 (edited) 6y
AsYouWish @ErinSueG I agree and I also think that besides the big things in the book that no one want to think or talk about, it also shows strong female characters that don't really rely on the male characters. At the time this was written those were probably scary thoughts for a lot of people. 6y
Erinsuereads @WhiskeyMistress and I have been yelling about context and timing for a couple weeks now!!! It‘s all about when things are released and where! If someone applies today‘s morals to a book released in 1956 it will have a completely different effect! Especially where women and race are involved. These kind of books become timeless because of that I think. 6y
See All 6 Comments
AsYouWish @ErinSueG I completely agree. Because sadly a lot of the issue addressed in Peyton Place and other books like it are still very relevant today, while other issues no one would find odd at all. 6y
Erinsuereads I think it‘s also arguable that some of them are more relevant now than they even were when written! Especially those written well before their time. 6y
AsYouWish @ErinSueG I agree. I think that is why so many books get banned from schools and libraries, because personally I believe books have power. Power to give strength, power to give ideas, power to dream and power to change things. Books like these address issues that need to be talk about then and now. Because sadly some things have not changed since the writing of these books. 6y

In this wonderful vintage book shop today. Found this book and had to have it. It was the first adult book I ever read. I was 11 or 12 at the time. I took the book out of my mums book shelf and hid it in my dolls cot. I read it lying under my bed. I‘ve never seen a copy before so just had to have this one! The shop was wonderful. The smell of old books. Bliss. @MrsMalaprop

“Indian summer is like a woman”. Whether you agree or disagree on how woman is defined, this is certainly a memorable opening to Peyton Place!

I actually was thinking of Metalious‘s description recently— we‘ve been having an Indian summer for a while (finally a good rainy day today)!

Thanks for tagging me @Ms_T and to @BarbaraBB for starting this #firstsentence hashtag! If any of you want to play, go right ahead!!

BarbaraBB Super first line!! 6y
ValerieAndBooks @kspenmoll I vaguely remember the TV show but it never occurred to me to read this until I came across it several months ago and I was curious about what might have been considered scandalous then. 6y
ValerieAndBooks @Reviewsbylola I loved it too! More substance than I expected. I have the sequel in my TBR but worry it won‘t hold up to the original. 6y
ValerieAndBooks @mrp27 oh, I hope you get to it soon 😊! 6y
ValerieAndBooks @BarbaraBB it is isn‘t it? I think the whole paragraph is written so well. 6y
Reviewsbylola I gave the sequel three stars and I don‘t remember it at all so I wouldn‘t blame you for skipping it. 😂 6y

Here are a few of my favorite #usedbooks that @MrBook and I have acquired! 😊 The 1950‘s books (The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit and Peyton Place) are both first-editions, and excellent stories. Which books from the 1950s have you read? 📚

MMenefee Lovely photo! I plan on reading my mom's copy of Giant, published in the 50s, by Edna Ferber. 8y
MrBook 😁😎👍🏻👌🏻 8y
ValerieAndBooks I recently read Peyton Place myself, loved it (actually takes place earlier than 1950s). Oddly enough I'm not finding any books in my library written/pub from that era other than "East of Eden" above, except "Rabbit, Run" by John Updike-- published in 1960 but definitely takes place in the 1950s. 8y
LauraBeth These are beautiful books! I know I'm in the minority but one of my favorite 50s books is Lolita. I love the prose and narrative and how Nabokov doesn't write Humbert as someone the reader can easily dismiss as a monster. Lots of great literature from the 50s 8y
Blair_Reads Beautiful photo! 8y
johnnie_cakes Love Peyton Place! That's a gorgeous edition. 8y
RealLifeReading What a photo! Fave 50s book - Charlotte's Web 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I've read a lot of Agatha Christie 🙂 8y
Leslie Peyton place was a blast. I remember watching the movie on tv as a kid and becoming so angry at the small town values. Too young to know that stuff was still happening! 8y
KimHM When I was a kid, I read the 50s era Trixie Belden mysteries over and over again. 8y

Who among us likes #VintageEditions? A bit of a bragging post as @BookBabe & I have begun the long and pleasurable process of acquiring older books. #FirstEdition "Peyton Place" from 1956 ?!!! One of our local bookstores/binderies has a whole room of vintage books. One series that I want to acquire soon is the entire original Tarzan series first editions. They're asking $40 per volume, but, oh, to own those and live with them ???.

Cupofjo I have about 3boxes worth of vintage so far.. It's a fun treasure hunt at used bookstores and they look so good on bookshelves! 8y
Alisnazzy I can just imagine how wonderful this smells 8y

LitProfNovara This book was on an episode of the Showtime series Masters of Sex as a piece of "smut" that the Provost's wife read before bed. Very shameful! ? 8y
MrBook @LitProfNovara 😂😂😂👍🏻 8y
quirkyreader As everybody has probably guessed with all my photos I collect older editions. 8y
HotCocoaReads I love vintage books too! I considered the first edition Tarzan but made do with a vintage paperback for $2 instead! 8y
KarouBlue @MrBook Super jealous. Peyton Place is one of my favorite movies of all time. Love that a print edition of the book can still be found! 8y
KVanRead ❤️My favorites are the ones with inky notes inside them, "To Mildred on her birthday. Love, Aunt Sue" or cool marginalia. They are awesome bits of time travel. Could be a cool FunFridayPhoto idea @Liberty ? 8y

I started "Peyton Place" out of curiosity-- what would have constituted shocking when it came out? Yes there are trigger warning issues in this book in addition to a few (mild by today's standards, IMO) sex scenes; but Metalious also shocked in that she exposed class differences and attitudes in a part of America (New England) that NE'ers were unhappy about her exposing. Very good novel and it'll stay with me for a long time.

Immersed in "Peyton Place". There's all the things here that made it scandalous back in the 1950s: sex, incest, drunkeness, jabs at religion, and and. But such keen and observant writing throughout! Only have done about 4 hours of this #24in48 #readathon thus far but still having a great time trying.

You know how all the promos for Grey's Anatomy involve an explosion, a big emergency, BIG DRAMA every week? This is that in an old-school potboiler with sex, scandal, deceit, incest, suicide, an illegal abortion, and...it's not Proust but it's a hella compelling story and pretty well written.

So this is the physical pile which is literally "books on the nightstand," but there's also a larger virtual "pile" on my Kindle. Don't judge me for the Debbie Macomber; sometimes I like to see what all the fuss is about, and it was a quarter at a yard sale. #TBR Tuesday.

Lauren_reading No one should judge anyone else for their reading choices! (I may judge people that don't read...) I'm not a huge McComber fan, but her books are sweet 😄 8y
