Marriage of a Thousand Lies
Marriage of a Thousand Lies | S. J. Sindu
47 posts | 36 read | 92 to read
Lucky is an unemployed millennial programmer. Her husband, Krishna, is an editor for a greeting card company. Both are secretly gay, presenting their conservative Sri Lankan-American families with a heterosexual front while dating on the side. When Lucky's grandmother falls, Lucky returns to her mother's home and unexpectedly reconnects with her childhood friend and first lover, Nisha. When the two rekindle old romantic feelings, Lucky tries to save Nisha from entering a marriage based on a lie and finds herself pushed to breaking point. A moving exploration of love and queerness.

See where it says “heartbreaking” at the bottom? No joke.

The characters feel so real, so flawed. Most of the 20-30 something characters‘ parents are Indian or Sri Lankan immigrants, and so arranged marriages are pretty common in their lives. Lucky, a lesbian, married her friend Krishna (who is gay) to avoid losing her family by coming out to them. Her sometimes lover Nisha is about to enter an arranged marriage to a man she‘s never met. ⬇️

Soubhiville It‘s super complicated and no one is really happy because of that. All of the characters are complex and haunted by the choices they have made in the past and the ones they have to face now. This book is really well done, the so-so rating is just because it left me so sad. 3y
Ruthiella I often have the same trouble rating a book that makes me super sad. Like I am mad at the book for making me feel that way but on the other hand, what a good book because it really made me believe. 3y

I can‘t thank @MeganAnn @Michael_Gee & @Reggie enough for sharing their insight and these novels with me the past 4 months. Reading these queer experiences with your commentary had me feeling joy, nostalgia, anger, sorrow, love, and so much more- and I never felt alone for the ride. Thank you so much for your picks, and while I wish mine wasn‘t filled with such toxic characters, I‘m glad you all devoured it as quickly as I did!

To satisfy her traditional Sri Lankan family, Lucky married Krishna. It works in a way, as they are both gay. But the denial of who she is is slowly eating her away, especially as her ex moves toward her own marriage. This is a searing exploration of sexuality and the clash between self and tradition. It‘s a tough but outstanding read.

@SincerelyWinona @MeganAnn @Reggie #LPMBC

I couldn‘t put this down (it‘s v. compelling & well written). I‘m struggling to distill my thoughts into 1 small Litsy review & ultimately decided I can‘t. I think the cover does the novel a disservice. This is not a playful story. Be prepared to sit closely with a MC who is derisive, passive, bitter, & selfish. That‘s ok (I just wasn‘t prepared). ⬇️

Michael_Gee (cont.) Other characters are flat, almost satirical types, the only one we are asked to truly empathize with is the central one. I missed nuance. (edited) 3y
Reggie Yeah, the mom. She was totally one note. And then she was like- why don‘t you go to the wedding? Nisha is your friend. I thought she might be turning over a leaf. But no. 3y
Michael_Gee @Reggie How did you take the ending with her mom? Do you think Lucky maintained a connection with her? 3y
See All 8 Comments
Reggie @Michael_Gee it‘s hard to say. Who did she have left? The daughter who sold herself out to marry the guy the parents wanted for her. Who lives in a different country. She‘s down two daughters, a husband, a best friend, and a mother. I think that mother does the shitty thing where she‘ll see Lucky, have lunch with her, but never acknowledge that part of her. 3y
Michael_Gee @Reggie Damn, Reggie! That‘s strangers in the cavern without a flashlight dark. 3y
Reggie @Michael_Gee did you see it going differently? 3y
Michael_Gee @Reggie I guess I did. I thought because she‘d lost everyone else she would accept Lucky on her own terms. But I went back and reread the ending and don‘t see where I got that. I thought it was hopeful that the book ended with Lucky and her mother, not a romantic partner like Lucky was so hungry (and not ready) for. But it doesn‘t end with them together, she leaves her mom alone to cry and does her own symbolic thing in the garden. 3y
Reggie You know, I think about all the books we chose and they all have their themes like mine was living your truth will set you free. And MeganAnn‘s was we have always been here, and there are those who have come before us. Winona‘s was not living your truth will crush you. And yours? Creation kills? Art is obsession? Don‘t date guys named Gash. Lol 3y

Book 66The beautiful cover is the reason I picked this book off the library's June Pride display. A Sri Lankan-American, gay woman, who married a gay, male friend so her family wouldn't disown her, reconnects with her first love as she helps her friend prepare for an arranged marriage. From page one the story is engaging. The writing is good. The characters are a bit flat and stereotyped, but the book is a quick, enjoyable read.4⭐s

@SincerelyWinona @Reggie @MeganAnn

Halfway through, y‘all, and I am struggling. I find Lucky almost unbearable. She sees everyone around her with such bitterness and judgement, unable to see with any compassion that everyone is making compromises in their life. I hope that she is able to grow past this shirking of responsibility in her own life and stops blaming everyone around her for the choices she makes.

Reggie I think that‘s why I like the YA versions of this book better. Because younger kids are more forgivable for the stuff that Lucky and Nisha were doing in their later twenties. 3y
Michael_Gee @Reggie I‘m also thrown because from the cover (which has a cheekily winking eye!) and the first few pages I thought it would be abt the camaraderie between Lucky and Kris, but that is quickly dropped and she describes him only with resentment. Bummer. (edited) 3y
SincerelyWinona I agree. It definitely wasn‘t as fun of a read as I wanted it to be. I don‘t think I would have enjoyed it as much without the personal connection. 3y

@SincerelyWinona thank you for picking this book because I probably would never have picked it up on my own. Holy crap did it trigger me. All the lying. To themselves, to their family. The fact that their families couldn‘t face the truth of their own kids. I felt like I was suffocating while reading this. Now on to Michael‘s book and your paragraph on 200 which I‘m looking forward to.

A well-written and thought-provoking novel rich with cultural detail. The central conflict is immensely believable and compelling: do you give up your family and that connection to your culture, or do you give up your personal truth? Personally, this book was hard for me to read. I have seen enough gay suffering, and this book doesn't let up on it. Lucky and her husband Kris are both gay, but married in order to appease their traditional Sri Lankan-American families. They each date on the side, which works just fine. Until it doesn‘t. Lucky wants more. She wants to be herself. This book wrangles with the dilemma that so many LGBT folks have to face. Do you come out if it means losing your family? What is the cost of freedom?

Despite not having the depth that I usually prefer in stories, this book swept me away; I loved reading it. The reader follows the main character‘s struggle between her homosexuality and familial Sri Lankan community in and around Boston, exploring the struggle of acceptance in a multitude of forms. While tackling big issues, it was a pretty light read. Your stormy beach day kind of book. #catsoflitsy

A marriage of convenience with a lesbian woman and her gay best friend in a religious Sri Lankan family begins to unravel as Lucky returns home to help take care of her grandmother where her ex lives, and her mother tries to control Lucky‘s life. The tension in this novel between Lucky, her family, her husband, and Nisha is something queer people are too familiar with, but the added racial tension will have you holding your breath.

Not sure how I feel about this one. On the one hand, I thought the writing was lovely. I‘ve focused on #pridereads this month and was pleased to read a story about queer South Asian folks. On the other, Lucky (the narrator) was the only fully formed character, except maybe the mother. I wasn‘t feeling the romances, didn‘t understand what motivated the characters, and found several plot points (see: runaway sister) superfluous. 3/5

Finished this novel today and I really, really fell for it ❤️. The story of a secretly gay Ski-Lankan woman struggling to accept her truest self and to being bound by family expectations and rules.

A stunning debut that provides compelling explorations on love, marriage, mothers + daughters, authenticity, obligations, and bravery. There are the stories that are written for us, and then there are the ones we write for ourselves.

Reggie There‘s this movie called Fire, made in India from the late 90‘s. It deals with this wife and her daughter in law falling in love with each other. Beautifully told with a mix of Hindu mythology thrown in, way before it‘s time, if you ever come across it, watch it. 7y

Jabberwocky @ReadingRover okay not to be crazy but like I love pigeons so so much DO YOU HAVE A PIGEON 7y
ReadingRover @Jaberwocky 😂 I do! I‘m a wildlife rehabilitator & he‘s a white homing pigeon that I took in to rehab because he was exhausted except when he recovered I sent him outside he wouldn‘t leave. He stayed outside my condo for 8 months. Then when it got cold I felt bad and took him in. I tried to put him out again in the spring but he wasn‘t having any of it. He threw a fit! Now he lives inside. The dog & cat fear him 😝 7y
Jabberwocky @ReadingRover That is the best story ever!! Did he acquire a name? You should secondly tag me in a picture of him one day. I know it‘s silly but we don‘t really have pigeons in my city and I travel to LA last year and I think they might be one of my favourite animals 😅😍🐦 7y
ReadingRover @Jaberwocky hahaha!!! Omg that‘s hysterical! Here in NY most people think of them as pests. Meanwhile they‘re usually smart, sweet birds. Mine just happens to be a smart jerk who acts like an abusive husband. His name is Snowflake ❄️ 😂 7y
ReadingRover The best is that he‘s all white so he looks all angelic but he‘s pure evil! When he used to fly around outside all the seniors used to think he was a white dove sent from heaven!!! 😂 I would just giggle & be like “hehehe little do they know “🤪Then I‘d watch him go poop on all of their window sills 😝 🕊 7y
ReadingRover And omg wait! Hold on! You don‘t have pigeons in Canada? Hmmm so close but so far. Well Calgary is far but you know what I mean! Anyway you may not have pigeons but you have freakin awesome bears and moose and sooo many other animals I‘m so jealous of!!! 7y
ReadingRover I totally have not forgotten about posting a pic of Snowflake. But getting a pic of him staying still is tough 😆 Right now I‘m looking at him as I type & he‘s giving me the pigeon stink eye as he struts and coos! Email me and I can send you a video!!! Msa3179 at aol dot com 7y

This book pulled my heart strings— well-told story about a young married couple —husband and wife are both gay—and how their marriage exists purely to satisfy the expectations of their Sri Lankan culture. The angst of Lucky and her husband Kris is absolutely heartbreaking and is felt throughout the story. Is satisfying the expectations of others ever worth not being true to yourself?

Catching a few last rays of the sun while reading this ARC and having more of my wine from the Okanagan! I'm pretty sure the already messy situation in this novel is going to get a whole lot messier. #QueerBooks

Just cleaned my apartment so am rewarding myself with wine from the Okanagan, popcorn, and a brand new ARC that I just got in the mail. It's about a marriage of convenience between a gay guy and a lesbian who are Sri Lankan-American. Can't wait to start it! #BookMail #QueerBooks
