Last Tudor | Philippa Gregory
New York Times Bestseller The latest novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory features one of the most famous girls in history, Lady Jane Grey, and her two sisters, each of whom dared to defy her queen. Jane Grey was queen of England for nine days. Her father and his allies crowned her instead of the dead king's half sister Mary Tudor, who quickly mustered an army, claimed her throne, and locked Jane in the Tower of London. When Jane refused to betray her Protestant faith, Mary sent her to the executioner's block, where Jane transformed her father's greedy power grab into tragic martyrdom. "Learn you to die," was the advice Jane wrote to her younger sister Katherine, who has no intention of dying. She intends to enjoy her beauty and her youth and fall in love. But she is heir to the insecure and infertile Queen Mary and then to her half sister, Queen Elizabeth, who will never allow Katherine to marry and produce a Tudor son. When Katherine's pregnancy betrays her secret marriage, she faces imprisonment in the Tower, only yards from her sister's scaffold. "Farewell, my sister," writes Katherine to the youngest Grey sister, Mary. A beautiful dwarf, disregarded by the court, Mary keeps family secrets, especially her own, while avoiding Elizabeth's suspicious glare. After seeing her sisters defy their queens, Mary is acutely aware of her own danger but determined to command her own life. What will happen when the last Tudor defies her ruthless and unforgiving Queen Elizabeth?

I have read quite a bit about Jane, and only one or two other books about Katherine and Mary, so I was kept interested. With regards to Elizabeth I, this book sure looked at a different side to her, where she was so very worried about being outsted by others in her family to take over the throne. Katherine and Mary were next in line since Elizabeth had no children (alongside Mary of Scots). I listened to the audio and had no problem with it.

@MittenGirlPeach chose cozy English Christmas as the theme and nailed it! I confess- I‘ve never had lemon curd- what do I do with it? Thank you so much! #staycationintime

Chrissyreadit 😍😍😍😍 7mo
DinoMom Lovely package. My grandmother always made lemon curd. She used it on a lot of things. Put it in tart shells, on her ice cream or would dip short bread cookies in it when having her afternoon tea 7mo
MittenGirlPeach I‘m so good you like everything! What a great idea for a staycation; I may steal it next year. I‘m a tea and toast lover, and I use the curd on toast. I also put it on scones and ice cream. I love the idea of putting it on shortbread cookies! 7mo
squirrelbrain Yes, lemon curd on toast. In the UK we use it like jam (jelly!). 7mo

Very good. This is proof of how Philippa Gregory evolves with every novel, it just flows as her love for the Tudor period just shines through. Also you can see how much research has gone into this book.

Caroline2 I really enjoy Phillipa‘s books too. 👍 4y
Birdsong28 @Caroline2 She is my ultimate author 📚📖 4y
8little_paws do her books need to be read in any particular order? They're all 'related' right? Or a series?
4y
Birdsong28 @8little_paws I have only read the Tudor court series them in publishing order as when I discovered the author she hadn't finished the series so I caught up and read it as she published but it is probably better to read it in chronological order. Look on her website for more information https://www.philippagregory.com/ 4y

I have always enjoyed Philippa Gregory books and this was no exception. There is always one thing that bothers me though, she clearly does not like Elizabeth I. Every single book paints Elizabeth as a completely heinous queen and downright awful person. I understand writing from the views of characters who would be opposed to Elizabeth, but I do find this tiring as I quite love Elizabeth I.

Aussie_SFF I was really lucky that my library got it as an audiobook when it first came out. Philippa Gregory is like my secret love as a Sci fi/Fantasy nut but I really cannot get enough! 👍 4y
BacklistReader @Aussie_SFF that‘s how I am too. I mostly read fantasy and then Gregory. I‘ve been looking for some other historical fiction authors to try but I‘m really picky about how the story is presented so I haven‘t had much luck finding more good ones. 4y
Aussie_SFF @BacklistReader I completely agree. The closest I have found is the Nicholas Shelby books by S.W Perry but they don't have the grandness and scale that Gregory gets. 4y

I love Philippa Gregory. I‘ve read/listened to her books for a few years now, but this book is difficult to listen to! These ladies make one bad decision after another... I just want to climb into the story and ask “have you learned nothing about the queen?!? You really think marrying without her permission is a good idea?!? Really?!?!” Grrrr!! So frustrating!

First Philippa Gregory I have read for ages and really enjoyed the story of the unfortunate Grey sisters. As ever whilst she takes a fair amount of literary license it is always interesting to see the forgotten player of history - especially the women. I also enjoyed the more critical assessment of Elizabeth here (which may not be to everyone‘s tastes)

I really enjoyed this book, I devoured it in a matter of days. I'm a sucker for all things Tudor-related. This book is written from the perspective of the 3 Grey sisters, Jane, Katherine, and Mary after Edward VI dies young and leaves the throne of England empty and the battles the sister fight to survive in the vicous and fickle royal courts. (Note, it helps a lot if you already have basic Tudor knowledge, if not, it could be a bit confusing.)

Disappointing. All 3 main characters were extremely unlikable. The way they each attacked and hated Queen Elizabeth I was annoying and not well done. They all just repeated the same phrase over and over. Got old fast. Though I have enjoyed so many of Gregory‘s books, I wouldn‘t recommend this.

This one is going back on the TBR stack despite being halfway through and enjoying it. I have so many books I want to read right now and I intend to read the Plantagenet and Tudor books in order from start to finish during summer break and so will be reading this then and may as well just wait rather than reread it so soon. My TBR is turning into a mountain and fast. I‘m feeling overwhelmed and crowded under as my TBR has never been this big before! How do you manage your TBR? I don‘t know whether to reshelve in order to be read or make a reading journal list of an order to read them all, whether to make smaller TBR piles or what!? What do you do? Advice needed. #booklover #bookblogger #bibliophile #bookaddict #mounttbr

StephanieGeiser I have a pile in order of deadlines on my nightstand so I know what needs to be read next. 6y
jfalkens I started a tbr jar for my to-read and to-read incomplete series, I don't always use it tho. I try not to stress over the size of it and instead enjoy what I'm reading. If I'm not enjoying a book tho I have no issues bailing and starting something else. 6y

TrishB I just have physical piles everywhere and hundreds on my kindle and none in any order! Love it like that 💜 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @jfalkens It‘s never been a thing that bothered me before but after donating away all my read books that I won‘t read again I‘m left with two bookcases full of books I need to read. 😅 I have no issues either though with bailing on a book I‘m not enjoying or get bored of. Hah! 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @TrishB I have OCD so that would drive me to madness. I have to have them all clean and neat and shelved evenly and any that don‘t fit have to go 😳 6y
TrishB All my actual read books are categorised and shelved, but my tbr is definitely in the organic side.... 6y
jfalkens @Wanderingwithwords I have two over-flowing tbr bookcases too. I definitely found that bailing with a book I'm not feeling definitely helps thin down the numbers, as well as not keeping books you aren't going to read again. Otherwise I try not to stress and still get new books 😆 The upside is I rarely worry about running out of books to read 😂 6y
Centique I make a mini list on my phone just for the year ahead - I can cross some off, move them around, have a theme for the year etc. The full TBR is too big to play with like that for me! And yes, bail and delete as much as you need 😊 It should be enjoyable more than a chore 👍 6y
StephanieGeiser @Wanderingwithwords LOL yes! Deadlines like when they are due back to the library or when I have to mail them for one of the Litsy book clubs I‘m in. 6y
ReadingRuby I wrote them all on little pieces of paper and put them in a jar to be picked from to choose my next read. The only problem is I keep buying new books and want to read them instead of what I pick from the jar.... 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @TrishB Organic! 😹 Love That. 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @jfalkens That is an upside I always look at. And it‘s relieving to know I‘m not the only one with so many books. 😹 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @Centique This is the best advice I‘ve had. Bail and delete, don‘t stress, make the list smaller. Thank you so much! 💛💛 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @StephanieGeiser Ahh! Yes. That makes sense. All my books are my own though. No deadlines lol x 6y
wanderinglynn My tbr are several stacks on the floor around my desk (which would probably drive you nuts based on your earlier comment). The tbr stacks don‘t stress me because I look at books like good friends - you can never have too many. 😀 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @ReadingRuby I would do the same but I‘d buy more and want to read those too. And a lot of the time I have stuff I need to read for uni so they‘d have to come first and also I worry having a TBR jar would make it feel like a chore x 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @wanderinglynn Aww! What a very wonderful way of looking at it! I‘ve been looking more like the old favourites are friends and the rest are strangers I need to meet right away lol 😹😹 I should try to look at them all like that. X 6y
wanderinglynn And I agree with @Centique - reading is about pleasure. I used to feel guilty for bailing on a book, but now, I bail when when not enjoying it. Life‘s too short & there are too many tbrs to waste time forcing myself to get through 1 book. Bail & delete as needed. 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @wanderinglynn It‘s marvellous advice, thank you sweetie x 6y

It fascinates me to see how the royal family used to live and how brutal and restrictive their lives were. And I am fascinated by women‘s roles through history & even in present day, shaping the history to come.

So I‘ve finished The Last Tudor, which means I‘ve also finished Philippa Gregory‘s Plantagenet/Tudor series 😥 I enjoyed The Last Tudor, although I wouldn‘t say it was the strongest in the series. The first third that focused on Jane Grey the 9 days Queen was the strongest, but it was interesting to learn about her sisters in the others parts. God those times were cruel!

Not quite as intoxicating as some of the others but maybe because of the doomed fate of the Grey sisters. My friend always says that women are the worst enemies of women. This book concurs. A good read.

RaimeyGallant There's a Tudor author on Litsy named @tonyriches :) And a belated welcome! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you need it. Or if you prefer how-to videos, @chelleo put some together at the link in her bio. @LitsyWelcomeWagon 6y

I‘m finally getting tucked into this tonight and I can‘t wait! I absolutely love all of Philippa Gregory‘s books about the Tudor‘s and the War of the Roses. I‘m so sad that she is not planning to revisit the time period after this book 😥 but on the bright side it means I can try to find another author who writes about it. If anyone has any recommendations I would love to hear them!

ladyonequestion Reading Alison Weir's Tudor Queens series atm, the Katherine of Aragon one is very good 6y
ReadingRuby @ladyonequestion ooh I‘ll have to check her out, thank you! 6y
Sophoclessweetheart Weir‘s Tudor Queen series is very good. The first two books are out now. The third comes out this year. Also, Jean Plaidy. 6y

Weather knocked out my gardening plans for this afternoon. I guess I will be forced to cuddle up and continue on with the third and final bit of The Last Tudor. According to the trees in my yard, spring will be here soon. . . Until then . . .

Anything Tudor means #PowerandthePassion . I loved this recent one by Gregory, which chronicles the Grey sisters - Jane was queen for 9 days before Mary Tudor took the throne! Each sister has their own ambition, but it‘s really the family that propels them to the sisters‘ positions in court. The more I read about the Grey sisters, the more saddened I am, especially for Jane. Family do not always have the best intentions in mind. #MarchIntoOz

Cinfhen Haven‘t read this one but I agree the royals certainly fit the bill for power & passion 🙌🏻 6y
Librarybelle @Cinfhen I‘ve only read a few by Gregory, but this one is my favorite 6y
Itchyfeetreader Jane Grey is a fascinating character - I haven‘t read a Gregory for a while but might give this a go 6y

Raebelle I read a biography on Lady Jane Grey in grade school and just cried and cried...I'll have to keep an eye out for this book 6y
Librarybelle @Raebelle It is such a tragic story! If you want to read even more, I read this one a few years ago and really liked it (it‘s nonfiction): 6y

The Last Tudor finally came out in paperback! (Obviously I couldn‘t buy it in hardback, as I have all her others in paperback and it would have ruined my shelf aesthetics!). I‘m really looking forward to reading this one, although I‘m kind of hesitant to as it is the last in the Tudor series and I am OBSESSED with all things Tudor - I don‘t want it to end! 🌹 Also this cover is absolutely gorgeous

Finally starting this book. I bought it the day our sweet old Rottie Trajan died, and I think I‘ve avoided starting it because of that. I‘ll miss my garden buddy this season.❤️

Finished this audiobook today & I‘m sad because it is probably going to be the last in this series & I‘ve really enjoyed all of them!! This one is about the Grey sisters, the granddaughters of Henry theVIIIs sister, who are cousins to Queen Elizabeth & should be in line for the throne. Instead 1 after another they all end up prisoners of the Queen. By the end of this book I was not a fan of Elizabeth!!

readinginthedark Elizabeth was a selfish jerk...but a good queen/king? 6y

Last book of 2017, and I think this is one of the best books by Gregory. Gregory looks at the Grey sisters - Jane Grey was Queen of England for 9 days, before Queen Mary overthrew her rule. Full of historical information on the period, I got so caught up in the story of the three women that I didn‘t realize how much time had passed! A great read, especially if you like British royal histories and fiction.

And, that made 89 books this year!
