Dark in Death
Dark in Death: An Eve Dallas Novel (In Death, Book 46) | J.D. Robb
49 posts | 46 read | 2 reading | 7 to read
Lieutenant Eve Dallas returns in the new novel by the #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense, and takes on a case of death imitating art... It was a stab in the dark. On a chilly February night, during a screening of Psycho in midtown, someone sunk an ice pick into the back of Chanel Rylans neck, then disappeared quietly into the crowds of drunks and tourists in Times Square. To Chanels best friend, who had just slipped out of the theater for a moment to take a call, it felt as unreal as the ancient black-and-white movie up on the screen. But Chanels blood ran red, and her death was anything but fictional. Then, as Eve Dallas puzzles over a homicide that seems carefully planned and yet oddly personal, she receives a tip from an unexpected source: an author of police thrillers who recognizes the crimefrom the pages of her own book. Dallas doesnt think its coincidence, since a recent strangulation of a sex worker resembles a scene from her writing as well. Cops look for patterns of behavior: similar weapons, similar MOs. But this killer seems to find inspiration in someone elses imagination, and if the theory holds, this may be only the second of a long-running series. The good news is that Eve and her billionaire husband Roarke have an excuse to curl up in front of the fireplace with their cat, Galahad, reading mystery stories for research. The bad news is that time is running out before the next victim plays an unwitting role in a murderers deranged private dramaand only Eve can put a stop to a creative impulse gone horribly, destructively wrong. From the author of Echoes in Death, this is the latest of the edgy, phenomenally popular police procedurals that Publishers Weekly calls inventive, entertaining, and clever.

This is my third book from JD Robb‘s In Death series and I think it‘s my favorite so far! On a side note, I hate when B&N puts these stickers on the books.

I am always amazed that Robb can keep churning out original, inventive murder cases for Eve to solve...but she does.

This one centers around a disturbed woman who confuses fiction from reality and decides to “rewrite” a popular murder series featuring the killers as heroes.

Missed a few of her regular supporting cast members, but all-in-all another satisfying addition to the series!! 👍 4.5/5⭐️

“On the mega screen bloody murder played out in classic black and white for an audience of one hundred and seven. With the sharp screech of violins, violas, and cellos that number dropped by one.”

ShyBookOwl 😳 reading this book profile reminds me of how afraid I was of theatres for a few months after seeing Scream 2 lol!! Great setup here though! Thx for sharing 4y
robinb @ShyBookOwl The setup was fun because “Psycho” was actually the black and white movie the audience was watching in the book. The villain killed the victim during the 45-second shower scene when the audience was riveted to the screen. 😳 (edited) 4y

Up next I‘m tackling my #bookspin for this month. I‘m a little behind on this series of 50 (so far) so I‘m playing catch up with number 46. 😊

Excited to check in with Dallas, Roarke and the gang!

robinb @wanderinglynn 👍 Me too! I especially love that I can just jump back into it at anytime and feel like I‘m instantly with family! ❤️😊 4y
CBee 50 in the series!! Wow! Isn‘t this Nora Roberts‘ other author name? 4y
See All 15 Comments
robinb @CBee Yes, she uses the Robb for this series, and yes, 50 and counting! 😳 This series is seriously addictive, so be warned if you ever start it...like potato chips! 🤣🤣🤣 4y
CBee @robinb I just put #1 on my TBR 😂😂 not like I don‘t have enough to read!! I also want to read 4y
robinb @CBee Yay!! 🎉 I always love to hear someone‘s trying it...I‘d love to hear what you think. And I actually have Year One (a gift from my daughter) but haven‘t got to it yet. Like you said, it‘s not like I don‘t have enough to read! 🤣🤣🤷🏻‍♀️🤪 4y
CBee @robinb I am all about mysteries and thrillers. And cop stories 😁 4y
robinb @CBee I especially love mysteries...even more specifically, historical mysteries. 4y
CBee @robinb and these are set in the future, right? 4y
robinb @CBee Yes, they are, around 2058+, and that adds a cool element to it as well. Just to mention (in case you have any triggers), this contains some instances of child molestation, and there is some violent content (villains) throughout. But I feel the good definitely outweighs the bad in her stories. (edited) 4y
CBee @robinb I can handle it. I love Karin Slaughter and her books are pretty violent sometimes - and Patricia Cornwell was my go to years ago 🤷‍♀️😂 4y
TheAromaofBooks I love Nora Roberts and keep thinking of starting this series, but am a little scared of the 50 titles!! I've been reading my way through the 87th Precinct books (by Ed McBain) for a while - five books at a time - to get through his 50-odd titles, so maybe when I'm done with those I'll start this as my next long-term series!! 4y
robinb @CBee 👍 Me too, but I always like to mention those things just in case. 4y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks I understand. I was later coming to this one as well...I think she was already around 35 when I started. To be honest, they really are addictive to me, however I would usually do like you and read 3-5 in a row before moving to something else and coming back later. The majority I‘ve borrowed from the library, but I love them so that I‘ve started buying them now when I catch a sale. I KNOW I‘ll want re-reads. 😊❤️ (edited) 4y
CBee @robinb oh definitely, always important to mention 👍🏻😁 4y

#LitsyPSA for Austin-area Littens - if you‘re out in the icky weather we‘re having and enjoy J.D. Robb, it looks like Recycled Reads on Burnet got in someone‘s entire collection. You might be able to call them and ask them to hold them for you too. They should all be $1 to $2 each if I remember the hardback pricing right.

Hour 30 Challenge, Favorite Series. I couldn‘t choose between these two. I have read all 50 something of the In Death books, Eve and Roarke will always be my favorite couple. A close second is Kate and Curran of the Kate Daniels series. Anything by the Ilona Andrews writing team is a top pick for me. #24in48 @24in48

This was a good book. I've heard some say it was boring, but as this is like #46 in the series, I feel they can't all be overly action-packed. And I quite enjoyed it. As always, love all the characters and the developement of even secondary characters. Great series!

The 46th book in this Series. I usually fly through this series, but this one I found lacking. Eve and Roark stay in and read, with a fire going, which I kinda liked. It was a new side to them. Of course, they were reading books for a case. The characters are still evolving after 46 books, which I like.

I've been a fan of this series for a long time and have read them all though the last few have not been as great as the first ones. I feel like the books have stepped into this place where the characters don't really grow anymore and previous quirks that were cute are too much now. Maybe this is due to Eve working through the abuse she suffered as a child in the previous books. I think I'm done with the steries unfortunately.

Feels like the most metatextual of her novels: Eve tracks a serial killer, a former fan of a popular best-selling series of murder mysteries, who is recreating them after becoming disgruntled with the author. Lots of passages about how some readers can‘t maintain boundaries, invest too much in the fictional universe, & try to bully authors. Cozy scenes with Roarke, no one in the inner circle is in personal danger, & Bella makes a cute appearance.

When people ask why I read these books still, it‘s things like this: the fact that Eve has grown enough to let Peabody have the damn yarn. Little things like this that show how the characters change over time.

I update more on Goodreads, but I wanted to pop over and say that I‘m really enjoying this one. I especially love the “meta” aspect of her writing about a writer, especially about fans trying to write her novels. Gave me the lolz pretty good.

ScientistSam @ElenaBaer you certainly can read a number of them as stand-alones - that's how I started - but you lose the back-story and character development. The relationships in the series and characters really do grow, so I'd lean towards recommending starting from the beginning. It's worth it! 6y
