This is like Wicked, the origin story of the villian we know as Ursula. Basically. I mean you knowww what‘s gonna happen, just a matter of how, and it wasn‘t that good of a reason. And I‘m still a little confused on the whys. very YA, felt childish in places, took a bit before I actually cared. It was….fine? Idk not my fave, I think there‘s a second book? Probs won‘t be reading it. I liked the idea of this book better than the execution

Sad to bail on this for now. It just feels very YA stereotypical fantasy romance. Though the world is unique, it just has a very sad dreary vibe that I am not in the mood for. One of my #Roll100 picks

I really liked this origin story of the sea witch. It was young adult yes. But I thought the setting was rich, and loved this take on how she came to be, and linking it back to the little mermaid towards the end. Glad I listened to some of it though as it was set in Denmark and I couldn‘t pronounce anything! 🤣

🐡 Overall I enjoyed it. It did take me a bit to get into it but... once I did it was great! 🐡 So, no plans today. However yesterday I went to a drag brunch and they were doing a theme of Disney Villians! They had an Ursula! I loved it!!! 🐡

🐬 My head? I have been having these horrible horrible headaches and... I am doing okay! I am stronger than my head who hates me right now! 🐬 This book was pretty good .. not to say it's my favorite. I don't know... I remember we read Tempest Rising for this group and I enjoyed that one too. Not sure which one I enjoyed better though 🐬

🐬 So I am going to have to say Little Mermaid... I mean she was the first Mermaid I remember and still break out into Little Mermaid songs often :) 🐬Love is incredibly dangerous but so so worth it!!! 🐬

I never discount legend type cryptids. Maybe they were real at some point. Maybe they still are today and stay hidden. I‘ve seen a few weird videos which could be mermaids. Plus manatees are mermaids! Have you ever seen the mermaids of Weeki Wachee? So much fun!

🐠 Hmm. I would say no. I mean it's a possibility. I believe in Nessie and Champ (the VT Nessie) but.. Mermaids... not so much.. 🐠 First, they would have to get past the whole I didn't believe in them initially but... Yes if there were a mermaid it would be kinda neat to be friends :) 🐠

It was a slow start but came together greatly! I really enjoyed this one. But it was more of a YA book than I was really looking for (but of course it should have been)

⭐⭐⭐⭐ This was quite the treat! It's a retelling of the little mermaid and is quite a treasure.

An Ursula origin story. I didn't love it. The first bit was full of teen love that started to get boring. The revenge part was better, but felt kind of rushed. It all didn't quite connect for me. #FairytaleReadingChallenge @Charityann

I usually enjoy a good backstory about a villain. I love The Little Mermaid and this was interesting, but it didn‘t fully keep my attention. I thought it was a bit slow in parts and didn‘t really fully grab my interest until the end. I liked this one, but it wasn‘t anything spectacular for me.

I love when authors take a fairy tale and put their own twist on it. I have always been a fan of the Little Mermaid, being an ocean baby myself, I felt a kindred connection to her. This book is beautifully crafted to bring the reader into a world where magic is not only possible, it's illegal. Where two young girls and their best friend (the prince) learn just how unforgiving the world can be...

I loved the story telling. Sarah Henning set the novel in Denmark and brought to life the Danish coast, a fishing village rich in customs, & moments that were so vivid.

I loved the fresh take on a classic fairy tale. There wasn't a HEA, I wanted to see her with the crown prince & show those snobs their love is true. But, I should have expected it. Afterall this is the story of how the sea which became.

I love the cover. And the narrator does a good job. But I‘ve never been a huge fan of retellings, and less of YA retellings. This book did not change that opinion.

It‘s okay but overly predictable, relies too heavily on the Disney version, & lacks character development. But I did appreciate the author weaving in actual Danish history.

While I enjoyed this book and the authors writing, I did think the story line was a bit slow and also very predictable. I will probably continue with the series but only because I want t know how its continued because I felt like this could be a stand alone book

I really loved this story. It was beautifully written with magic and tragedy at its core along with the hope of a young girl who, despite circumstance‘s cruel demand, had yet to turn bitter.

I was not expecting that ending! Shit got real, and changed what was a fairly pleasant but simple tale into an exciting retelling!

There's one fairytale retelling that I can never pass up, Ursula's origin story. I've no idea why. Maybe I just like a villainess. This story was fine. I would've liked to see her using her powers more or wrecking vengeance on the people who tried to kill her. It was a nice read, but I'll most likely have forgotten it in a year.

5⭐'s. I absolutely loved this book!! I was surprised by how much I liked it. I never gave much thought to Ursala in The Little mermaid. I can't wait for book 2.

An interesting origin story for The Little Mermaid. Seems to go off of the original story rather than the Disney version. Probably won't reread, but it was enjoyable.

I had a hard time getting into this novel. The third-person narration of certain chapters can be confusing - I mixed Iker and Nik‘s POVs at least once. The characters sometimes show immaturity in ridiculous ways. I would have liked a darker tone, as I could not quite relate to the tragic events of the past or those to come: I could not feel Evie‘s emotions, be it pain or joy, for most of the book. It was a bland read. (But look at that cover! ❤️)

I read this on a day and barely put it down! A fantastic fairytale with a truly concrete sense of place and a cast of sympathetic characters. It was wonderful.

Fairytale retellings are hit or miss, but for me this one is a BIG HIT. The story pulled me in from the first sentence and kept me there until the very end. I know that there is a sequel coming but I don‘t think it‘s needed, this book was perfect as a stand-alone. These aren‘t the mermaids of your childhood!

Another hold came in from the library I am so excited to read this book.

I am a sucker for anything to do with mermaids or water. And this cover is so gorgeous, so I naturally had to get this book. I really enjoyed the story although I wanted a bit more overall from it. More depth, more ambience and more magic. That said, I still really liked the story and the characters. I'm curious to see where the second book will go as this felt like a standalone to me.

I really enjoyed this retelling :) Sometimes it‘s hard to go into a novel you know is going to end sad (and boy did this one pull on the heartstrings at the very end) but I absolutely loved it. And also, the physical cover for this book is absolutely gorgeous. Her purple eyes absolutely GLOW and I‘m sorry but it‘s totally worth it to read this just so you can look at that every day. Great debut.

I actually listened to this one on audio and really loved it. I‘m a big fan of tales related to but not technically retelling a fairy tale. The author did a great job on the characters and overall feel of this book! Really enjoyed it! #audiobook #fairytale
