Dinner List
Dinner List | Rebecca Serle
"I have five words for Rebecca Serle's The Dinner List wistful, delicious, romantic, magical, love." --Gabrielle Zevin, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry and Young Jane Young"We've been waiting for an hour." That's what Audrey says. She states it with a little bit of an edge, her words just bordering on cursive. That's the thing I think first. Not: Audrey Hepburn is at my birthday dinner, but Audrey Hepburn is annoyed."At one point or another, we've all been asked to name five people, living or dead, with whom we'd like to have dinner. Why do we choose the people we do? And what if that dinner was to actually happen? These are the questions Rebecca Serle contends with in her utterly captivating novel, THE DINNER LIST, a story imbued with the same delightful magical realism as One Day, and the life-changing romance of Me Before You.When Sabrina arrives at her thirtieth birthday dinner she finds at the table not just her best friend, but also three significant people from her past, and well, Audrey Hepburn. As the appetizers are served, wine poured, and dinner table conversation begins, it becomes clear that there's a reason these six people have been gathered together.Delicious but never indulgent, sweet with just the right amount of bitter, THE DINNER LIST is a romance for our times. Bon appetit.

This has been on my shelves for a long time. It just wasn‘t for me. I was hoping for a cool take on “5 people alive or dead you‘d invite to dinner” but what I got was a watered down romance.

“If I reveal this, will the whole tower collapse? If I tell him how I really feel, will that be my last turn? It was terrifying and exhilarating because every time I took another piece out and the tower stood, I felt like I‘d won. What I didn‘t remember is that at some point in the game, the entire tower falls. It happens every single time. It is the only way the game ends. Why then did I keep playing, knowing that I would be left with rubble?”

I listened to this book and the author narrated it. The narration wasn't that good and made the book kind of boring. The MC has a birthday party where 3 people from her past, her best friend, and Audrey Hepburn attend. A lot of it is the MC trying to repair relationships, and maybe even change some events that would affect her future. It was an ok book, nothing too exciting or noteworthy.

Everyone has been asked that common question, which five people dead or alive would you invite to a dinner party? Well luckily for Sabrina, she is able to make this question a reality. Including Audrey Hepburn, her dead absent father, her best friend who hasn‘t been as present lately, her favorite college professor, and that one recurrent boyfriend that she can not seem to shake. An interesting, entertaining read

I really liked this book. It's a fast story about the 5 people you'd have at the dinner table if you get the chance. There were only two minor issues for me that didn't really impact the story, but overall it was enjoyable. It does make me think about who I'd invite to my dinner. #litsyAtoZ challenge @bookishmarginalia

A little bit about a magical birthday dinner with Audrey Hepburn, mostly about analyzing an imperfect romantic relationship. Definitely reminded me of what it was like to be in my 20s. The audiobook is read by the author and a short, enjoyable listen.

I‘m a bit of a crier, and this book made me cry at the end. To me, it feels a bit overwrought, but nonetheless touching. A lovely look back on the importance of holding on, and more importantly, letting go. If any of you read it, I‘d be curious if you could tally how many bottles of wine are drunk in this book. I‘d wager.... 40? Haha!

Several of Rebecca Serle's books are on my TBR list This one was available by audio through Hoopla and I enjoyed it so much! The premise is, which five people, living or dead, would you want to have dinner with? Fair warning, the last 10 minutes will take you to your knees and have you reaching for the tissues! This book definitely has me thinking...🤔

Megabooks @Cathythoughts I‘m not much of a romance reader anyway, and I didn‘t think this would be all that and so, so utterly sappy. And the plot was tissue-paper thin. Just really not my scene. 5y

If you could pick 5 people, living or dead, to have dinner with, who would you pick?

What seems to be such an innocuous question turns into reality for Sabrina Nielsen. What follows, will change her life.
Such a lovely novel that was hard to put down.

I‘m sure you have probably thought about the question “who are the 5 people you would ask to your ideal dinner party?” This is the story of such a dinner party and the main character has included Audrey Hepburn! The author read the book for the audio, and she did not add to any enjoyment. There were a few touching moments and a surprise reveal from one of the guests. That being said,it‘s still a borrow rather than buy in my opinion. #evenwithaudrey

Extremely fictional but the beautiful telling of lives that were always intertwined.

marleed I was glad I stuck with this because I liked the last half so much better than the first half. Some of the blame may go to my bailing on the audiobook. The narration is not good - so much better in print. 5y

I started this book as audio read by the author. She is sorely lacking in narration skills - I bailed. I moved to print because of an upcoming IRL bookclub. I was invested in the last half so it could be my first book that moved from a pan to a pick.

For this pic I looked through my shelves for 5 IRD (in real dead!?) folks in which to dine for an evening. This dinner could prove interesting!

Kaila-ann I almost bailed on this book too but was glad I stuck with it. 5y
marleed @Kaila-ann I don‘t know what her editors were drinking when they read the first half, or who agreed she should narrate her own book. But I really did like the last half. I‘m glad I‘m committed to finishing bookclub picks! 5y
Kaila-ann @marleed I had some serious doubts about the first half as well and wasn‘t sure I was going to like the main character enough to keep going. A narrator can definitely make or break a book. 5y
Centique I would love to have Katherine Hepburn to dinner - what a strong character! 😍 5y

I finished this in one day. On the surface it‘s a story about Sabrina and her 30th birthday dinner with her theoretical dinner list companions - her list of the 5 people she would most like to have dinner with. I went into this thinking that it would be a light, fluffy read. Then I was concerned that i wasn‘t going to like the main character. I ended up being wrong on both counts. It‘s a story of love, loss and beautiful second chances.
