Keeping going on aggressively pink covers this month. This was something that had been on my shelf for a couple of years, and I am sure deep down I knew it was going to scream White Feminist issues and so I put it off. Sort of wish I had just donated it instead of reading it.
The big issue is I am sure most white feminists will not see all the problematic things in this book. Token lesbian who gets screwed over, one line for a Trans character 👎

ChaoticMissAdventures Corruption gets glossed over because what the intent was there? Most of it made me feel icky but the writing is fine and I read the whole thing. 3y

The Female Persuasion | Meg Wolitzer

this book is supposed to be feminist literature about finding your path in life & in the movement, & even though this book is long, I don‘t think it says much. this book is inherently white feminist & catered towards the issues the movement has in privileged circles. it‘s so much build all for our MC to end up with a husband, baby, a brownstone & a best-seller spouting ideas similar to the mentor who betrayed her. no intersectionality in sight.

kera_11 I don‘t think this book is bad, but for something trying to be in the now, missed a lot of the point I think 3y

Book 85
A book about feminisim and finding your voice and place in the world. A well-written novel with compelling characters with interesting lives. Written in third person omniscient pov with Greer as the protagonist, the reader has access into the lives of too many unequally-developed characters. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Brilliant prose, layered and emotional story. This book is NOT pop fiction, it‘s literature, which makes it a slower read. Much is beneath the words. Character driven. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think my expectations were too high going into this read. 😕

It has all the elements of a kickass feminist novel but sadly, I wasn't a fan of any of the characters. At times the book felt more like a list of ideas rather than a story.

First read for #BookSpinBingo this month though. @TheAromaofBooks

KatieDid927 Yeah this one falls a little flat. 4y
Hooked_on_books I agree. So much potential, not great execution. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Sorry this one wasn't great, but at least it's off the list!!! 4y

I like Meg Wolitzer. This is a BIG story, encompassing quite a few perspectives. I listened to it at the same time as I read The Future of Another Timeline and The Scarlet Letter. That‘s a lot of fiction involving women and how the world treats them. It was sometimes too much considering the stress of just being right now. Also there‘s a fair amount of sex in this book that listening without headphones while I did chores was 😳with family around

Megabooks I just finished this today too and mostly listened to the audiobook. 5y
mcctrish @Megabooks what did you think? 5y
Megabooks @mcctrish loved the narration, but the book itself was good, not great. Usually I like complex webs, but I just couldn‘t get fully engaged. 5y
mcctrish @Megabooks I found the different perspectives on the same time line good and bad, sometimes it gave you the whole story and sometimes it just made it go on and on and on. And even though I was ready for it to be over, all of a sudden it was and it felt abrupt 5y

This book follows Greer, an avid reader turned feminist, through college and into her Trump-era early 30s. But it‘s also about the trials of keeping first love alive, losing a sibling, finding and losing a mentor, and betraying your best friend. And Wolitzer takes time to explain the actions of the side characters. That‘s why it‘s so long.

Good, not great. 3.75⭐️

From the Spanish Flu. My son‘s friend walked down the street to chat while my son shot some hoops -from 6 feet away- but proceeded to spit on the ground while they spoke. I‘m not sure WTF he was thinking but everyone involved got this in a text and there is no more chit chat happening. Also my book is a bit to risqué right now to play out loud while I do stuff

JanuarieTimewalker13 I saw a guy spit the other day (I was in my car driving by), and I was PISSED. He was like 4 feet away from a PO, chatting to him...at least he turned away, but still, dangerous and stupid. I guess for some men it‘s automatic. 5y

I really enjoyed this coming of age story of Greer who feels her path is set out ahead of her but then meets powerful feminist Faith Frank at which point her life takes a different route. Spanning several decades the book mainly follows Greer but also her best friend, her boyfriend and Faith Frank herself. I was fully absorbed in each character and the exploration of feminism and power but mainly this was just a very readable, well written story.

The story of Greer who we meet as a college freshman at the beginning of the century and follow up to the present day. The story principally concerns the influence on Greer's life of a famous feminist, Faith Frank. Wolitzer is great at creating believable, flawed characters and making us care about them. The "plot" revolves around one moment of selfish, careless betrayal and a horrific tragedy which hits the reader like a punch to the face.

Meg Wolitzer is quickly becoming an auto-buy author for me. With the exception of The Uncoupling which I LOATHED, I find so much common cause with her characters‘s lives and fears and dreams, even if my personal circumstances don‘t mirror theirs. I found this utterly compelling and eminently readable. 4🌟.

I‘m not sure why but for some reason Meg Wolitzer‘s books just feel insincere. This story meant to be a rallying cry to young activists and feminist felt forced. Ask me next week the characters names and I‘m sure I won‘t be able to recall. A fast read but not one with staying power. #BorrowNotBuy #MoreMehThanYeah Thank you @LibrarianRyan for the blow dryer trick😉That pesky sticker came right off‼️

Reggie Idk, I still think about the guys in here. Cory and the other guy who cheated on his wife she gave permission to only with floozies and not complicated women ONLY to have his wife leave him later for love. Which maybe if it‘s a book about feminism and your favorite characters are the guys maybe it was a fail. I know I gave this book a pick but its lack of intersectionality also bugged me. Maybe I didn‘t like it as much as I thought I did. Lol 6y

Meg Wolitzer was one of my favorite speakers at the 2018 National Book Festival, where she focused on her book The Female Persuasion (which I hadn't yet read). Now, reading this book for the Unabridged Book Club, I'm happy to say that the book lived up to its promise. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod The book, which focuses on the relationship between Greer, a naive college student, and Faith Frank, a pillar of the last wave of feminism, is about the way other people can influence us, can serve (as Wolitzer says in the book) as “pilot lights.” I thoroughly enjoyed Wolitzer‘s sense of character, her humor, and the ideas that lie at the center of her novel. To hear what Ashley and Sara thought, check out our new episode of Unabridged! 6y

Jee_HookedOnBookz @vkois88 the Sympathizer it is then! 😊You're so welcome, Tori! How are you? Hope you're doing well! How's Mari? Don't worry about the package! You already have your hands so full! You must take care of yourself OK xoxo 6y
vkois88 We are doing well. We both were sick most of January, and she's hitting the stage of teething where they're constantly bothering her... but we're good. We are alive and making it through, day to day. 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @vkois88 sending you all the strength and love you need! ❤️❤️💪💪💪 6y
vkois88 ❤❤❤ 6y
vkois88 Any good recommendations for soothing teething?? 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @vkois88 I wish I do but for my girl she loved her paci so her paci did the work... What about Mari? Teething days are hard 😔 6y
vkois88 She doesn't like a paci 😕 We had so many cute ones but they never took. She was a thumb sucker. But she's mostly even outgrown that. Occasionally I'll catch her sucking on her fingers to dull the ache, but that's it. I need to get more baby orajel, but the only store around here that I've seen carry it has been out. I'll go look again tomorrow. I hate teething bc it makes her ears hurt too, and that's what bothers her most 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @vkois88 oh dear! I'm so sorry to hear that, Tori 😔sorry I can't be of much help. 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @vkois88 did her pediatrician give any tips on how to ease it? 6y
vkois88 We haven't seen her for a while... she just recommended the basic teethers and orajel before 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @vkois88 hope you'll manage to find some orajel for her soon. I Googled and saw this link. See if any of these can help? https://powellsowls.com/blogs/blog/76354884-34-natural-teething-remedies-that-wo... 6y
vkois88 Aw, thank you for the link! I'll check them out 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @vkois88 did you manage to find any orajel for her? 6y
vkois88 Not yet, I had to work tonight. But we will be going to the store in the morning to look again 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @vkois88 hope it's available this time! ❤️ 6y

SoniaC Originally feminism during Faith‘s time was focused an heterosexual white women. If you didn‘t fit that you weren‘t really given space to be part. Today feminist are much more inclusive of women of color and non heterosexual women. 6y
